As my journey continues on my r107 these videos and you have been so helpful. I just did this tonight. Wasn't that bad, mine had a small circuit board attached to the plastic that had to be lightly moved as the plastic cover came out. But, pure jello gear in there.

I just repaired mine yesterday, I got the part from Pelican, the instructions say to use a pair of pliers to squeeze the green part that is left over, turn in 90 degrees and squeeze it again, it will slide right off, then you put the new gear on, just flush with the top of the pin. I cleaned all the waxy substance off the bigger gears and applied a little grease on the top black gear per the instructions.

Thanks for your comment - so did squeezing the green part work out OK...that sounds a lot easier. Mike

......and what was the part number and cost from pelican? Mike

@@MikesMercsandothercars Hi Mike, the part # is PEL-MBEOD107-E1, it comes from a company called Odometer Gears. It was $25.00 US, plus a few dollars for shipping, I ordered it last Saturday, had the part in 3 days. On the bag it gives a web site on there you pick the Mercedes electronic odometer and it gives details how to install it. That's where they said to use the pliers to deform the left over bushing. They also say in bold letters, to use high compressed air to blow the remaining chunks of the broken gear out and sure enough, little bits came out. Leaving these parts in there is the number one cause of the repair not working. That being said, I would not have even tried this repair without your video.

At 4:14 you show the caliper dimension for the drill. What I can see there is that it seems to be 3.2mm instead of the said 3mm. I have tried both and indeed the dia 3.2mm works better in my opinion. However, thanks for the idea. It works well.

Hi Mike, I have a 1985 Mercedes 380 SL and the dashboard is the same. The light bulb that is suppose to light up the right side where the rev counter and clock is, is burnt out. Thats the bulb I need to replace. Thanks Leon

Hello. Great video Where is the additional earth connected to in the cluster? And, what is that connection at the center of the speedometer? I have the same speedometer but no cable is connected. Just the square connection on the side. Thanks
@MikesMercsandothercars4 жыл бұрын
Hello - In reverse order....the centre pin on the speedometer sends a 'speed signal' which may be used on some cars for engine management, ABS and cruise control if you have it. Disconnecting it, wont necessarily affect the car in any way. On my car an additional earth wire was added between the chassis and the corner bolt which effectively earths the underlying motherboard. At 7.31 in the video you can see the round circle of 15 pins. In the centre of the circle of pins is a hole with a flat bit at the bottom and a semicircle at the top (into with a plastic locating pin fits) Assuming pin 1 is right at the top of the semicircle (eg 12.00 o'clock), I believe the earth pin is pin number 2 - eg one pin to the right of 12 o'clock. Where are the three dash board lights located ? The one on the right of my car doesn't work and I want to replace it Thank you
@MikesMercsandothercars4 жыл бұрын
Hi - the lights on the dash board are all located in small brown screw in bulb holders. These are shown very briefly at 7.31 in that video. It might also be worth having a look at kzbin.info/www/bejne/npbGZXmtZ7KHf80 at 3.05 into the video. What does the bulb do that isnt working on your car? Mike

Mike, how did you take the cluster out?
@MikesMercsandothercars3 жыл бұрын
The cluster just pulls straight out - there are no screws or fittings other than the rubber seal around the cluster.Mine has been out a few times so it comes out easily when I pull on the the two bits of plastic either side of the speedometer. Mercedes also do a special set of tools with a "L" shape on the end (like lock picks) which slide down the right and left hand side of the cluster. Once in, you twist them 90 degrees and it allows you to pull on the back of the cluster. YOu could make some up with some stiff wire (like an old coat hanger. Good luck. Mike

@@MikesMercsandothercars - Thanks Mike, i bought my 1984 SL and like you know, various niggling problems. I have spoken to my garage and they don't have a clue how to repair my odometer. Would you ever consider offering a repair service for Non mechanic, frustrated owners like myself, i live in Kent......
@MikesMercsandothercars3 жыл бұрын
Sorry to read you have odometer problems. Most non specialist garages wouldn’t be interested or indeed have a clue how to fix these things. Has you mileometer stopped turning? Mike

Hi - sorry to hear you are struggling to fix your Speedo. Can you tell me if you are struggling because you have looked at it and thought...I don't want to get involved.....or whether you have taken it to someone already and they couldn't fix it? It seems abit extreme to drive all the way to Bristol from Kent....you will probably pass at least two specialist repairers en route. Mike

Seems like you have a vacuum leak, the "economy" gauge should be completely to the left at idle. Start with the basics, if all fails, use the "smoke" test. Good luck.
@MikesMercsandothercars5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that - a vacuum leak would not surprice me.

@@MikesMercsandothercars Usually not too difficult to find, let me know if you need help. I would start with the most obvious, all the small vacuum hoses and plastic lines, intake manifold, brake booster, etc.
