How to change the oil and filter on a Mercedes 500sl r129 chassis M119 v8
oil capacity 8 litres (8.5 qts)
recommended viscosity 20w50 if you only drive when temperatures are above freezing
5w30 10w30 for winter driving...not for summer driving

+ash i Foaming tire cleaner under the hood once a year..then a quick wipe down..works like magic :)

good video for the newbie, I usually vacuum the oil its easier and more efficient. Also I believe that MB uses Mobil 0-40 Synthetic for their oil of choice and it works great for me also

+Michael Hickey I agree with vacuuming the oil..I now use nothing but a vacuum..I used to like going under because I could always check for other possible problems, but it's too much of a hassle now.. The first generation r129 didn't have a synthetic recommendation in the owners manual, but I switched to Castrol syntec 5w50 ..the car loved it

When you take the filter off first the oil will drain faster, I think (so there's no vacuum) :)

hmm let me think about it ! well i bought it used doh the garage said its ok but have oil leaks the very same day i bought it the car lost most of its oil ((they said it have leaks )) the next day the transmission went dead on me the roof didnt work like was before i bought it and in a week found out that the car had a bad head gasket problem you know the usual ^^ my first germen car ^^ in 3 months the traction is not working anymore (gr8 news btw) and this is gona need another post hang on ^^

ok but after 2 times opening the engine up to fix the head gasket ((i dont think its fixed yet btw its losing water and the rad had blown off on the corner from the pressure )) the transmission is jerky some times just had both of my windows fixed replaced 2 speakers it only needs a new steering assembly 4 new desks 1 back axe at least 2 shock absorbents oh ya the super charger is about to be dead so i need 1 of these !! other than that its has been a joy to own ^^

Another question, my oil filter is not located on the side of the engine it is mounted on the front in front of the oil filler cap, is there that much of a difference between the 1991 and 1999 Sl500? I am also trying to replace my antenna and it turns out that its different , i have a CD changer in my trunk.

Yes the 1991 had the older single plug M119 v8 . The engine in your 1999 is the M113 modular V8 with twin plugs. Oil filter is easier to acess on your M113. The antenna would be a different version as well . Not sure which antenna is on the 1999 since I haven't worked on an R129 newer than 1993. I'm sure the newer one has an input for cell phone and a built in signal booster

Sweet combination: R129, M119. Doesn't say year, but if early 90's, is the high output. I have a 1999 CL500 mit M119, and they are high torque sweeties above 55mph. No need to floor it, and will climb past 100mpg and keep moving. My wife's R129 had the M113 and it flew, even much better than the CL500, since had 1,000 lbs less to pull.

yup ,it had the early HO m119..Japanese spec as well so closer to AMG specs. It was a quick car...the exhaust note is better than sex :)

hello, i own a 98 sl600 v12 ..and i heard u mention shell rotella t6 is a good oil ...u think that would a good option for my car 5w40....i live in pennsylvania usa

+adnan shahid It's good in the older cars (M119 etc. ) your engine is the M120 and a different oil like Mobil 1 European 5w40 is prob. a better choice.. I'm just not 100% sure the rotella t6 would be ok in your car..the older Benzes love it.. Oil preference and recommendations are nearly impossible to get anyone to agree on

adnan shahid I just am not sure that the same zinc additives are suitable for an M120. I'm pretty sure they would be, I'm just not 100% sure.. I've actually been using the Castrol syntec 5w50 for the past few years, and it has been really good at lowering coolant temps. It's recommended for older high performance cars, and also has a zinc additive like the Rotella T6

I've got a red one too. When i turn my car on there is some kind of siren/alarm. It always turns off but I don't remember it always being like that. I think I pushed a button, do you know what I can do to get the noise to stop when I turn the car on and off?

@@fupabox By my feet, specifically the passenger side. (I have poor hearing so I could be placing it wrong). Also, I should mention I bought the car 2 days ago so to correct my statement from before-- the other few times I heard the seller turn the car on I don't remember the alarm/noise.

@@brynabryna it sounds like it could be an aftermarket alarm of some sort , The factory alarm is under the hood , and the "key left in ignition or lights left on " buzzer is by the instrument panel .You may need to do some snooping down there to find what it is .

fupabox that’s exactly what it sounds like! The key left in ignition BUZZER... except the car is just turned on and all the doors and windows are closed so, idk why it’s buzzing. I shall snoop around tomorrow. Perhaps it’s just something I dont realize I’ve flipped. Thank you! Now I know where to begin my search 🌈🌟😁

@@brynabryna Another thought ..The hydraulic roof has a warning chime up inside the dome light . If the roof doesn't latch properly , it will alarm to let you know not to drive away . If the sound comes from above , then the electric microswitches in the latch assemblies may be sticking .

+jim dandy on older cars that don't require synthetics diesel oil worked extremely well...with the super high compression and sooty blowby , diesel oils need better cleaning properties and resistance to pressure and acids

no .. this is the m119 engine , yours would be the M113 . very different engines except for size

I have a 2000 and the procedure is similar except the oil filter is in a more convenient location on top the engine bay out in the open

+fupabox damn I'm pissed because I just 5W-30 Mobil One fully synthetic been driving on it for a 1,000 miles so far. The dealer ship said I should be good till next oil change. I'm in Ohio and it's been hot here recently. Temp around 90 degrees. My oil pressure is very inconsistent. Sometimes when I'm at the light the gauge shows 2 sometimes 2.5 and 1 and sometimes even at .5. Why is that? This is at all full operating temp.

5w30 is fine for winter/spring/fall...way too hot this summer for that thin an oil , which is why your pressure is down,, with this heat wave even 5w50 gets water thin

The weight has nothing to do with current oil technology..the difference is the additives..If you run anything lower weight in this engine durung the summer ,you can say bye-bye to your engine and it will burn off like water
