Mercedes Benz hardtop removal or install in just a minute

One person can handle the 90 pound hardtop on the Mercedes convertible with the right lifting mechanism. This one uses a discarded frame with a $75 Harbor Fright hoist to easily lift or drop the steel droptop in 60 seconds. The four point plus support leaves no marks either in or outside the roof and does not touch any delicate weatherstrip or the soft headliner.

The cheapest hoist was used, 440 lb. Electric Hoist with Remote Control Pittsburgh Automotive - Item#60346. Since I used a double strand it raises the capacity to 880 pounds, more than enough for the 90 pound top.

I think I figured out his pulley system. There is no center point of attachment. There are 3 pulleys. Two are on the lifting frame and the third is on a ceiling joist above one side of the hardtop. A fourth is not necessary since the hoist is directly above and at the SIDE of the hardtop. There is one continuous steel cord, a long one that runs down from the hoist to and through both pulleys of the lifting frame and up to a pulley on the ceiling. After it passes through that last ceiling pulley, there is a hook attached that hooks back into the hoist. This provides double lifting strength and prevents tilt. There is no additional lifting frame.

THe R107 top is heavier than the R129, but I nicked my shin on the R129 top.. I'll stick with my W124 E320 Convertible..

hi I have an issue removing the hard top because the rear pin in the middle is stuck... I can lift the top about an inch but then the pin is somehow stuck.... has anyone an idea how to fix that?

Wow that's quite a bit , probably cheaper that have a butler . Very nice car , which model is it ? I'm debating with my selft weather to get a 380sl or the 560sl Any thoughts on that , as far as cost of owning or mechanical trouble ?? I'm even looking at the r129 1999 , I have found a 380 and a sl500 for a great price , but the 560 is a bit more. Thank you

I have a 380 sl and a good mechanic. the 380s have an aluminum engine so the gas mileage is much better than some of the bigger ones, yet drives like a dream. Good luck and I hope you find one that you love!

Be aware that the 1999 R129's hydraulic top action is wonderful🙂 UNTIL it breaks 😖which I have seen happens frequently. The chambers that hold the fluids leak into the cabin, on the driver, and in the trunk. A fortune to have repaired. I am sticking with the manual operation.

why did you place 2 pulleys at the corners of your load leveling cross beam instead of something like a centrally located eye hook that would attach directly to your hoist hook? Is there a second similar width cross beam not visible in the video that has such an arrangement? Also is the pvc just for centering purposes? If not, does it bear load and/or efface the fabric undersurface of the top?
