I bought my 560SL 86 red beige interior 171k miles for 11k USD. Did those repairs mentioned, suspension etc and it was around 18k total, great car and I am very happy!

Great advice. My first time buying a Mercedes. I wanted a convertible. Found one through my neighbors referral to a private owner. He sold me a cosmetically beautiful ivory 560 SL with 110K miles. When my mechanic opened the hood he was impressed that everything in the engine compartment was “not bastardized” and looked really good. I’m taking your advice on the timing chain. He recommended valve cover gaskets and all new hoses. I have to ask him now about the heads, front arms, and injectors. This is a keeper!

Just bought my uncle’s two owner 87’ 560 that has 120k on it. It has lived most of it’s life in Arizona before it took a trailer ride up to Boise with me. A very well maintained car mechanically, but the sun has been a bit tough on the seats and interior trim. This car is 100% original. What are your thoughts on new seats? Research/Forums suggest purchasing new leather from GAHH and have a local shop install. I’d like to keep this car as original as possible. I’ve been watching your channel for a few months in preparation for this purchase, and I appreciate your insight. I was excited to see a new 560 video! Thanks, Dan

Have 180K on my 560SL (1987). Runs well. Used it as a daily driver for 15 years and the harder I drove it, the better it ran! Maintenance has been about like you predict. My approach to buying the car was to insist on good cosmetics, figuring I could fix anything mechanical. My boss sold his 560 SL about 20 years ago. He had brought it out from Wisconsin. The floor board beneath the driver's feet rusted through and he said he could see through to the roadway. The car was only about 15 but the weather, I suspect, made a parts car out of it.

As a 450SL owner, I’m jealous of the modern touches, the seats with the added side bolsters & that extra gear in the 560SL. I wish I could get those in my 450SL. I’d be happy with lower seats with tighter side bolsters for now. On the bright side, that iron block under my hood isn’t such a bad thing ;)

Excellent advice in my view. But some of theses issues can be used to negotiate a lower price but the buyer has to be willing to find these problems. Another approach is patience-----waiting as long as 6 months while checking sources to find the right vehicle can be a wise move. And look out for excessive rust which means it is time to walk away. The 560SL is a great car especially if you receive a good price.

👍 Right on the money with the higher mileage. Ever since I bought in to the idea I see more and more benefits. Higher mileage forces maintenance, it’s that simple. All my star cars are around 250K km. and running like a Swiss clock. I’m the strong believer in preventive maintenance and try to buy from like minded people. If the right 560 comes along I’ll gladly swap my R230 for it.

Thanks for this informative video. As a guy that drives his classics alot I think the high milage car makes sense if the low milage cars may need the same work.

How about the fact that 560’s destroy their head bolt threads anytime you replace the head gasket, camshaft, or do a valve job? Seems like a pretty significant DEFECT the 450’s never had and worth consideration. What is more important, going fast or going forever? I choose the latter.

Hi Pierre, I watch your videos all the time since I love classic Mercedes Benz. Based on your suggestion, I would like to buy a 1977 450 SLC with approximately 80/90k miles. Can you help me find one? Thanks
