Interesting question! Everything starts out by drawing lines over the faces of the object we would like to cover. It means our figures would be dimensional or tridimensional. The second step is to get the molds over these figures. The outcome would be with real measures. The gotten molds would be assembled by sewing them together. To do it so, we would have to add a seam allowance. There 'flat dimensional shapes' not so difficult to cover. The issue comes when the shapes are irregular. Then it would be necessary to resort to draw several figures and join the pieces with several sewings too. Otherwise to resort to some techniques I show in my videos. The piece (headrest) of this video has an irregular bulky shape.
