Hello Peter, I have really enjoyed your show, keep it up. I have a Mercedes Benz 190e 1988 version 2.0. It has a k-jet and it causing more troubles especially when the fuel thank is empty and refill again. What are the best remedial for such issue; either changing the fuel distributer with carburetor or change the engine completely, If i have to change the engine completely, what are the best fit engine? Thank you
@PeterMbiria1 Жыл бұрын
Hello Gonzague, thank you 😁. K-jet was the successor of carb and it offered more perfomance and better fuel economy. The problem with them as they age is problems like you have, terrible hard starts, very poor fuel economy and much more. In your case, I would try make sure the fuel tank doesn't run empty, try maintain a certain minimum fuel level. How does it behave when it has sufficient fuel? Any issues like hard starts? rough idle?
@PeterMbiria1 Жыл бұрын
Many owners of 190e facing challenges with FD system normally do change the FD and if the problem reoccurs after a short while, they do swap with carb (stromberg or Pierburg CD175) which when set properly, it will serve you well. I have used both FD and carb and, if set well, they'll make you happy. In my case, I advanced the system and as I write this reply, my 190e is running my own custom built ECU which has brought about many new features. To start with, the perfomance is on a whole new level. I Now have drive modes, Sport, Comfort, Economy and ECO+. I have a dial that I change through the modes realtime. Fuel economy is on a new level as well. I can do 13-15kms per liter on highway, 9-12kms per liter on City. It is a game changer. I haven't posted anything recently about it but you'll see the videos soon. Would I advice you to swap the engine with another one? No. M102 is a beast, only that, it was never given the attention M111 was. M111 is full EFI, M102 only got carb and FD. I have made my M102 full EFI with more features that are very competitive compared to M111. If your M102 engine is good (No oil leakages, has proper compression, doesn't overheat), keep it.

When I did my first video of this project, I wanted to document my design journey and everyone can see where it all started. I had the option of using existing ECUs from different brands but I wanted more control of the engine, so I chose to design my own ECU from scratch, literally.

i dont see any crank positio sensor by the flywheel or a mounting bracket on the front side, did you use the old distributor for signal and if so, which system are you likely to use once you go distributorless.
@PeterMbiria13 жыл бұрын
Hey man, you're right. I am not using the normal teeth bracket located on flywheel or modified gear mounted on the front but rather, utilizing the distributor arm position. It is precise and it is all I need to get the position to either fire spark or fuel. Just so you know, it has worked and I'll be posting a video of the engine running without using distributor.

what parts needed for the EFI conversion as simple as can be? mine is the 2.0L model. Thank you soo much.
@PeterMbiria12 жыл бұрын
Hey man. Well, just to have EFI, you'll need the ECU as the main thing. For the ECU to work, you'll need wire harness that will connect to injectors, coil over plugs and sensors(TPS, MAP, Temperature, Crank Position, Lambda**). Those are basic.

how did you solve the compression issue?
@PeterMbiria13 жыл бұрын
At first, I ran compression tests by blocking the spark plug hole with a rubber and then I pushed it by hand using box spanner extension. With this, I cranked the engine and in theory, if the compression was good, it should have forced the air to escape via the spark hole. I used this method because I didn't have compression test kit. I purchased one and did it the correct way. The compression values were high but not as high as the recommended values but was enough to make the engine run. I revised my EFI circuit, changed the sensors and the engine ran. If the compression was low, I could have opened up the engine, check 2 things, piston rings and valve seals., assuming the everything else is okay.
