I find it amusing when people say they are worried about leather maintenance. It is so much easier to keep clean, no concerns about stains, settles in beautifully and ages to look better and better.

Thank you for the good review. It is brilliant to see the comparison between the California and the Marco Polo from somebody who knows at least one of them. Both are wonderful cars. I believe I have seen a review in a German Magazine that the communication art (radio etc.) in the Marco Polo is better than in the California. Also I believe you get the Marco Polo with 4x4, which is based on tests I saw suppose to be better than on the VW. Never the less I believe the Marco Polo is to "posh". For a camper it should focus on the practical side, how to keep it clean, try, functional. I agree that the electrical folding back chairs are "over engineered". How long will it take before they brake? Also the chairs and table take too much room away from the boot.

Having just come back from my Scottish highlands trip in a rental VW Cali ocean I definitely want to buy a camper van but having looked at this video of the merc and subsequently the price lists for both it is actually cheaper to buy the Marco Polo if you upgrade the VW to have all the things that come as standard with the sport Marco Polo. And re the heater it has one but it’s electric oh and it apparently has two cup holders up front too😊👍🏼 I’m going to go and look at one of these to compare but I think the Marco Polo will meet my needs better. Especially the beds as I have a spinal injury and fused upper back. Thanks for doing this comparison video though as it’s been very helpful indeed

Glad you had a great time up in Scotland! The Marco Polo is a lovely van and you can't go wrong with either. Just be cautious with the electric heater because I believe it only lasts for about an hour before it has to switch off. Just make sure the heater is ok for your needs as we have ours on all the time in the winter. :-)

Sorry for the English, because my native language is Dutch. I was allowed to borrow the Marco Polo from a friend. I have experienced the following: the driving comfort is simply top. Spending the night a little less. We slept badly on the springs and mattress on top. Hence we slept the 2nd night downstairs, and used the mattress from above. This was more comfortable. Too bad that the car trunk has to give up so much space to the folding seats and folding table. Almost no place for luggage. We also had problems with the automation of the rear seats. We did not get one of the seats in an upright position. You showed more or less the same in this video.

Would the top sleeping quarter be comfortable for children to sleep in? Can you go into a little bit about what makes it uncomfortable for adults... I'm considering this as my mobile office and travel camper so any info is helpful! thanks

We comparison shopped here in northern Italy for the VW California Beach and the California Ocean camper vans and the MP. We took our time, checked out the VWs one weekend, the MPs the next. The MP fit/finish we found was far superior to VW and it had a smoother feel on the test drive. The large kitchen/living area appealed more to us in the MP than the VWs. This is where 2x big Germans, German Shepherds that is, will hang out. A mat will definitely go on the floor to keep the dogs from slipping and dirt getting into the tracks; too easy to pull out, shake clean and replace. During the test drive my wife sat on the rear seat/bed. She said she was very comfortable and even with the middle row seats in place it was clear she had ample leg room (our "Long" not "Extra Long" MP seats 6x people). I will likely find a place in the garage for the 2nd row when we're not hauling that many people. We always test back seats when purchasing a vehicle to insure our adult passengers are always comfortable. Living in the Italian Alps foothills I greatly appreciated the All-Wheel drive option, I'm hooked on All-Wheel after previously owning All-Wheel Audis and Volvos. And, thanks for the video review, it definitely got us interested enough to go look at them and get hooked. We take delivery of a new MP later this week! :-)

Hi , a useful review. No cup holders - surprisingly important , most journeys you'd want one accessible while driving. I use sports equipment and the test for me is often how you get the kit in and out and store it while occupying the inner space without having the kit available/on show for theft. Mountain bikers and surfers and windsurfers - like me are a large part of the market and why so many VW vans are converted - I wish Mercedes VW etc would realise the need to illustrate/design for such behaviour - they know we exist. The review was informative. It's time these high price vehicles delivered the comfort levels the money deserves. VW have had it too good for too long - time for a challenger , japanese manufacturers have been slow to challenge , but they'll come at these prices. As a 5 LWB owner - it does what I need, but the 'cool' brand may not be so cool it holds me forever. I had a Bay VW back in the 80's and nostalgia over function is overrated for me, so maybe the MP is next for me.

Thats what I was thinking...where do I put my bodyboard? I converted my Audi estate into a camper and a roof box held what I needed. I just struggle with the way these are set up not for adventure but for peeps going to a campsite. I'm not seeing features that seem geared for my bodyboard let alone my mountain bike.

That frige is huge! and I love the rear split access. Overall I wouldn't change a thing. Oh and don't forget. You still have the option and power to pull a small caravan behind you and bring along friends or family and they can retire to their own private space without having to sleep in a tent if that's not their thing.

Picking up a Marco Polo AMG Line next month. I’ve always dreamed of a VW California but I have a Large Black Russian terrier and the VW was just too small. Both desirable campers though. I think it’s down to the VW’s long standing reputation they do well, but the Mercedes is hot on its heels. The Merc drives a lot better no doubt about it but you buy for your personal choices. As for the flooring we have had a bespoke Matt cut for it to cover the runners and protect the floor whilst camping.Both great campers and a great honest review. Happy days ☺️

Peter, we actually got ours to accommodate 2x Long Coat German Shepherds; no more jumping in and out of the XC-90, they can more easily just step up into the MP. Same thought on putting down a mat, heading to Leroy Merlin before we receive our new MP later this week. Very much looking forward to our first excursion!

Great Video guy's. I've had a look through a lot of your videos now. Thanks. very informative. By the way I am currently in Harris on holiday. Lots of VW campers and other vans here. I currently drive a Touareg, seriously considering a Cali or perhaps the Merc. From my point of view the Marco Polo looks better and more luxurious but my feeling is that Cali will be more reliable and less likely to have minor faults. Back to Harris - this is one of the most amazing places in Britain, if not the world, if you like beautiful beaches and are not too concerned about the weather.

I am on my 3rd Marco Polo. Perfect for those music festivals far down the continent. Prefer the model prior to this one with the amaising 3l V3 diesel and 204 Hp and more practical interior. It is also just under 5m long making it cheeper on some ferries. Same great beds and no problems whatsoever with seats. They do need some calibration from time to time to fold down properly. This is done using a switch under the rear seats. The 3l V6 will cruice at 130-140 km/hr using 10l/100 km.

Thanks for the video. I looked at the Marco Polo before ordering my California Ocean 4Motion DSG 204 with diff lock. I too liked the features that you liked on the MP but the key thing for me was that the MP is rear wheel drive. I'm a landscape photographer and do most of my work in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, including going off road so RWD was just not an option for me. There were other things that I preferred on the Cali but that was the deal breaker for me, so much so that I didn't even test drive it. Did you guys have a test drive and, if so, how does it compare to the Cali?

The MP can be ordered in Rear only, Front only, or All-Wheel drive. We just picked up a new 2018 with All-Wheel drive yesterday. Very smooth on the road. We live in the foothills of the Italian side of the Alps so I've learned to appreciate All-Wheel drive (had it on my Audi TT and Volvo XC-90, our MP is replacing both). To get to my place of work on a 300m climb with switchbacks in wet and snowy weather All-Wheel is hugely beneficial. Looking forward to our first excursion next weekend.

Thanks for the review, interesting, a couple of items that I think make the California a better camper after having a look at the Marco Polo. Generally the height of the Merc is lower so with the awning extended anyone over 6 foot will hit your head on the metal work and inside does not seem as high - just my perception. It is very nice inside but imagine being in a camp site with mud around, so not very practical also is only two wheel drive. A deal breaker for me is the storage of the chairs and table, for me a driveway tent takes up where the storage in the Merc so that would have to be left at home. Nice vehicle but not very practical. Idyllic camper for me would be a long wheel base California with the V6 diesel motor made by VW----please.

I believe the AMG version of the pop up roof on this van opens in the opposite direction which sort of mimicks the DRS wing in F1 so that overtaking those pesky Clios or Jettas on the motorway would be made easy!

Very objective review. Many thanks. What a dream it would be to be choosing between a MP and a Cali Ocean! As you say, both are lovely. MP's blinds not so good. It's a bigger & wider vehicle, so will be less handy on very narrow roads and Italian streets! Loss of boot space with its chair stowage. Not sure about the RWD. Can't you get a Cali with an electric door? I think I prefer the low-key, less flashy California. VW should offer a LWB Cali version!

We have 2x long coat GSDs and the kitchen/living area will be theirs during our travels (I have leashes that plug into the seatbelt wells used with harnesses, not collars when driving. I'm looking now for the possibility that there is a means to hook a leash into the floor tracking). I'm going to get a rubber backed carpet piece to lay down to prevent them from slipping, scratching the flooring and dirt/foreign objects from getting in the tracks. Interesting, I'm in Italy and here the brochure offers, rear, front and all-wheel drive. We just picked up an all-wheel drive, super smooth on the road, I could barely discern the automatic transmission shifting during the test drive. And I need the automatic after 22x years with the U.S. Paras. Knees don't appreciate clutching at all. Also, ours came with shift paddles on the steering wheel which is super when coming down off Der Zugspitze in snowy conditions!

I agree that the California floor space particularly in sleeping mode is not enough for a dog to sleep on the floor in his own bed (I know that Bentley sleeps down and yourselves up, when I did my road trip I found it very comfortable in both but on some sites with a bit of background noise or louder campers I would often switch and sleep downstairs and pull the top bed down which made it much quieter still having the roof up for ventilation, as much as I'd love a California I'd have to have a long wheelbase transporter for the dog nighttime floor space, how did the Marco Polo compare in this way? Also floor space taken into account the California seemed to have a really large useable boot space which I had a lot of kit for photography and water sports in, how did the Marco Polo boot space compare in this way as it does not have the same kind of chair and table storage as the California? Think it's such a shame Vw never did a long wheelbase California! Tho the long wheelbase Riemo and Bilbo and Nomad are good possibilities in this respect

Yeah the Marco Polo had more floor space but far less boot space unless you did away with the table and chairs but not many people would want to do that. We also like the look of the long wheelbase VW too as it does seem to give a lot more floor space

Great video! We looked at the Marco Polo a couple of weekends ago and thought it was just a bit too posh for us! We have a dog too and we were worried about the wooden floor. The electric seats in the back look like a pain and did you notice that the floor runners didn't have any rubber cover strips in them? Some MP owners are complaining about runners always getting stuff stuck in them. We felt the Cali was just a little more polished through years of minor tweaks. Where's Bentley!!?!

That's interesting about the runners because this one we looked at was obviously very unused so the seat moved easily but we did notice the huge gap for dirt in the runners so that's not surprising that they get stuck. Bentley was at home asleep I'm afraid but he'd love to have scratched that cream leather!

We have 2x Long Coat German Shepherds, I actually got it to accommodate them in the kitchen area. My clever plan is to go pick up some rubber backed carpet and lay it in the kitchen area, thus "scratch proofing" the floor and keeping dirt and other foreign objects and out of the runners. And then again, looks like there's plenty of storage room for our Dyson cordless! I did the same thing with the rug in out XC-90 for the past 5x years. Pulled the dog rug out and it looks like new, which is good as I'm selling it and replacing with a MP, taking delivery this week.

Looks a very swanky van! I like how the rear windows and tailgate window opens :) The electric bed is alright, but it takes ages to fold down. I imagine after a long drive arriving late at night, you'd get fed up pretty quickly of having to wait to get into bed haha! Does your Cali not have the electric closing door? The one we tested did and it was so much quieter than our normal T5's sliding door. We love our diesel heater, couldn't be without it, it'd be cheaper to have one retro fitted than to buy it as a factory option! Hope you had an awesome wedding day too!

Good review thanks but for someone who is new to camper vans I can't understand why anyone would buy one of these or a VW California with no shower or toilet when for a slightly larger van you could buy something like a Westfalia Amundsen and have it all built in. The lady wouldn't have to worry about having to shut the door when she goes to the camp site toilet. Some people need to go to the toilet in the night. The other thing is that there are increasing restrictions on where you can take these vans now which can spoil a holiday. I'm not convinced about these at all but I was tempted.

Just responding to the opening comment that it has a 140bhp model... the 2018 220 has 161bhp (figures for the 250 are correct). I'm about half way through, not sure what they'll conclude but I can only say we love our MP... it is a joy to drive and absolutely great to camp out in. What more is there...

Am I Right in thinking that the Marco Polo prop shaft cannot be located unless a major amount of the interior / flooring is more or less removed .......... as it’s built in to the chassis and cannot be accessed from underneath ......... this of course could only potentially be a problem in the event of a possible repair ?

A great objective review - thank you. I'm about to go for the Marco Polo because I like the luxury touches and I have had a test drive and the feel is much more luxury car than the Cali IMO. Since it will be my daily driver that makes a big difference. As to why no cup holders then in the people carrier V-class there is a central unit between the two seats and the cup holders are there. However this has been removed in the Marco Polo version otherwise you would not be able to swivel the seats. No cup holders unless they were going to create a new dashboard / front fascia unit just for the Marco Polo, which I suspect was too expensive.

Great review makes me want the California more now.Vw have many more years experience making campers than Mercedes which shows.I think the Mercedes has some nice touches.But I think it's more of a two people camper as Id be so stressed out telling my kids to watch the leather seats and trying to keep them seats clean would be a pain.

Noel Kavanagh - they aren't really a new thing, they've been around for 30 odd years..... They are just new to the UK. In fact it's Westfalia (who Benz now own) who are making them and they've been around for nearly 70 years....

So .. would you get the Marco Polo for the extra size alone? It seems a bit too ott in a lot of respects compared to the Cali ... ie that if you’ve got one of these you’re trying a bit too hard.

Yeah I think if we were buying again we'd still buy the Cali as it's a better all rounder and also the fantastic residuals are proven in the Cali. Also there's still a better following for VWs

Hi I am on the horns of this very dilemma at present so found video intriguing. I own a 56 plate MP. There is no doubt both it and the modern incarnation have a longer internal footplate for living/sliding than the C. The Westfalia cabinets in the modern MP are much more substantial than those in the C. I have been to three VW dealerships this week and every showroom model had bits of faux metal trim loose or hanging off the rear cabinetry together with unacceptable play in the tiny hinges. It has shocked me at the price level. However the MP has these foibles from my use: (i) the base of the centre console where the cup holders have appeared is a nuisance. It impedes swivelling round into the back with seats facing forward. Its the same on my model. You just cannot get your feet round without sliding all the way back and even then its nigh impossible to avid scuffing the console. (ii) There is a lot of wasted lateral space in the MP - when the bottom bed is down there are gaps to each side pinching precious 10-15cm off the width of the bunk (iii) the bloated table and chairs 'kit' in the boot is just a ludicrous waste of valuable storage space. It might suit picnicking but it is just obstructive for anyone who leads an active life. The ability to use that space flexibly needs to be restored. The result is that the rear 'boot' storage space on the MP is just far too small. It is diddy once all the space beneath the bed extension has gone. Conversely, it is just staggering that VW, yes VW, still cannot produce seats in a 60K vehicle which are height adjustable AND swivel. Westfalia have been making and fitting such seats for decades. Most Third part converters can manage it. Its so very poor that this has not been attended to. The MP front seats are a hands-down winner as is the media interface - VW is too small by modern standards and needs to make up its mind whether it is ever really going to be a space big enough for a worthwhile touchscreen. Keep the information coming !

More important than the video is audio. The camera audio is only a guide. Always use a dedicated mic for anyone on camera. Will make your presentation effective.

Big disadvantage for UK IMO. The side door open out onto the road if you are parked on a road. When they change the side for the steering wheel for right hand driving they should also change the side that the door opens so that it opens kerbside

Yeah, I agree to a point. However it’s useful as soon as you hop over the water to Europe. In tricky places it’s easy to go out the passenger door still. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Great and honest review! Maybe the best Marco Polo review on You Tube! Well done. I always wondered how they would compare considering the number of things they have in common. I still lean towards the VW Cali. Not having heat as standard would be a deal breaker for me and I don't like where the chairs are stored, that takes up valuable space in the back, think VW's placement was a more sensible use of space. Although having hot water as an option would be a real luxury, especially in the rear shower. Do you know if this is an option in the VW? If not, perhaps as an after market option? What about solar is that an option for either? Keep up the great videos. Oh, did you see the VW concept XXL? Very cool!

Thank you so much for the lovely message. We've later found out that the water heater is actually a coolant heater for the engine. There isn't an option for hot water on either the California or Marco Polo. The XXL is awesome! Would love to see VW put something larger into production... maybe one day. VW people are very blinked matter what vw are the best to them even when their engine are faulty and the company blatantly lies and cheat about the figures . after my rant I have had many of good thousands of miles in my friends VW vans but a bit stiff ride . good video
