I owe you an apology. When I first watched this video I thought that you were comical. Although removing an engine would make sense, it is a lot of work. Calling yourself Master Mechanic Gio was at the time funny. Rotating a motor fourteen times, seemed to be overkill. After I replaced a timing chain, the first time in years, I now realize that you are pretty smart. Always doing belts you basically set them rotate the motor a couple of times and if the lines line up, you are good to go. I couldn't understand why the marks on the chain would not line up to the crank and cams even though the engine was in time. Then I remembered your video, and realized that it takes a few rotations for the marks on the chain to line up. I was also humbled by the fact that I have never worked on a Mercedes, although that is going to change. Compared to me, you are a master at your craft. Please accept my apology. I am just a DIY guy that is fascinated by cars. Thanks for an excellent video.

Thank you for your presentation, You really emphasized what needed to be highlighted. The timing chain cover on these engine cannot be removed without taking off the sump pan at the bottom of the engine because of the bolts that attaché the bottom of the timing chain cover to the block.so its a really big job to change the chain.

In this example the engine is being timed with the number one piston at TDC, I don't know about this specific engine but the normal procedure for the m112 [ Mercedes 320 v6 ] is to position the flywheel [ harmonic balancer ] to 40 deg after TDC [ In this position the keyway on the crankshaft would be pointing to 12 o clock ] then adjust the cams to align the cutouts to the top of the cylinder head 3 o clock right and 9 o clock left cam. you may also notice that the dot on the balance shaft gear wheel does not line up with the copper link, [ 1 :59 min ]

Thts wht I know too his crank shaft isn't on 40° mark TDC and the cam shaft are off a little bit coz they aren't lining straight with the flat surface of the cylinder heads if he can put a timming tool there it won't line up

Hey bro I removed the motor and transmission together, but when removing the cam sprocket the camshaft move on both sides, once I got it timed and back together I rotating it 14 times and it came back to the mark's as you said but now when attempting to start it cranks and stops, so I try turning the motor by hand and it gets really hard after the second rotation but gets easy about the third rotation, is my cam out of sink even tho I have them in the notches and aligned with the copper links?

It looks like you replaced the timing chain guides as well. Did you do this WITHOUT having to remove the cylinder heads?

Did plenty of these without pulling the engine, but I also had the car on a lift, so I guess that made it easier to access underneath so many times.

In my days the procedure was to unpin the old chain, connect the new chain to the old chain rotate the engine while the old one comes out the new one rotates in .......of course I would take out the glow plugs or spark plugs to make rotation easier....

Kristian Freund if your changing the chain only u have to take the valve cover off and you need an assistant to help you have to have the chain link remover if it's an older engine it's easier but u must know what your doing ..if not leave it alone

If you rotate the engine with no tension on the chain your chain is going to skip on the sprocket losing your timing. There is a procedure on KZbin for replacing the timing chain without removing the timing cover,

I have a 1986 Mercedes 380 SEL w126 engine 86,747 miles . I started it after sitting for a whole year. It ran for about a minute and kind of locked up . I removed the valve covers spark plugs and still will not crank manually or with starter starter just binds up and starts to smoke if I keep the key on I don't want to put too much pressure on the crank what should I do. I'd appreciate some feedback if you have the time thank you.

Turn the engine counter clock ⏰️ wise manually and see if it give you a full rotation ,and if it doesn't than one rod is bent or broken.

+Olubunmi Ayodele It is a completely different engine and design. This is a video of the older M112 SOHC V6. You should have the M272 DOHC V6. There was a class action against Mercedes over those 272/273 engines. Very expensive and labor intensive repair.

C series has a single chain and it stretches! In addition the cam sprocket wears and will jump causing your valves to get damaged. I have a 2005 c230 and has done it twice.

try a product called blue devil it doesn't sound like its blown too bad i guarantee it will fix it....so do they. and don't forget to change the oil. use the blue devil that costs $60 the other one they sell doesn't work as well.

How many miles on the engine would usually require this chain to be replaced? (2008 CLK350) I have one with 144K miles and one with 182K miles. I noticed a noise the other day on the one with 182K miles. It sounded like a rattle/knock. IDK Maybe not a knock? Maybe just a rattle?
