This car came to me as a non runner, no ignition at all.
A scan revealed a steering lock malfunction.
So I removed the steering lock, and the rest, is on the video...

It's definitely possible to remove the ESL module without removing the steering wheel or the steering column completely. It's enough to remove 3 out of 4 screws (2 bottom screws + 1 top screw) of the steering column and loosen the 4th remaining on the top side just slightly. Now you can gently lower the bottom of the steering column and remove the ESL, as long as it's in the unlocked position. To access the top side screws of the steering column you might find it's easier by removing the plastic trim of the gauge cluster and pulling away the column's covering (around the very top section of the column right behind the wheel) to the front.

Quick fix!!!! Unlease the steeringadjuster tensioner,that leaver on the underside of the colum, and then push the steering wheel alltheway in and out,up and down, somewhat rough if neccecairy. Done!

I will say that you my sir has one of the best videos explaining this process in detail. I have a 1999 C230 kompressor and mine is fine but looking at a car that does have this problem to use the parts from it to fix what ever is going on with my transmission. I know this video is a year old and if you have any knowledge of the transmissions in my 1999 C230 kompressor I would greatly appreciate if you could get back to me. I can write what it is doing and hopefully you might be able to help and save me time and money. One day I pulled out and it acted weird as if it was ok then it kinda felt like it was stuck or slipping in first gear. So I pulled over put it in park and back into drive and it seemed ok to take off but did it again. I figured it was low in transmission fluid so I put an entire quart in it even though I know your supposed to take it to mercedes to have it checked. But once I put it in it ran and drove great. Only problem is that white smoke started to come out from under the hood as I was going down hill, was told it looked like a blizzard was behind me. The white smoke also will come out where you put the transmission fluid in. I know that I over filled it because I bought the transmission stick off of eBay later that week and it shows it is about an inch passed the full mark. I have a way to suck out the excess fluid but my problem is this. I don't know why it does this but when the engine temperature goes over 80 like 2 needle widths higher the transmission will start to put off the white smoke even if I am sitting still in line waiting to go through a fast food drive threw. Do you know what keeps the transmission fluid cool? And does the lines go to the radiator or the A/C thing behind the radiator. The reason I ask this is because my 2 fans for my A/C stopped working when a friend put to much R134 in it but now that a lot of the R134 has leaked out the fans are coming on but just for a few seconds then shut back off. But when he put to much R134 the 2 fans went so fast that it sounded like an air plane was going to take off and the A/C still didn't work. So I was told to let some of the R134 out because he had put to much in it. So took a wire clothes hanger and let some out and it started to get cool so they told me to let more out and I did then it was cold as ice but the 2 fans still didn't come on. But now they are just starting to work again. So does the A/C and the 2 fans have anything to do with cooling the transmission fluid down? If so what do I need to do to get the fans running properly. If not what do you think could be wrong with my transmission as to why when the engine temperature goes about 2 needles width above the 80 it will start to smoke? Of course it does this when it gets warmer but haven't had it have a problem when it is cool outside. I love my car and it only has 136000 on it which is low miles and I can't a ford a payment right now and if I buy a car that I can afford it is going to have the same mileage or most likely a lot more miles and I will have problem after problems with it. I hope I hear back from you soon. Going to go and look at the car that has the problem with the ignition lock. He wants $500 for it but if I can't see it run or drive it, it honestly isn't worth that kind of money. I was just thinking if I bought a car just like mine I would have parts to keep mine going for a long time yet. Thank you for making this video and hopefully you will be able to help me.

Hi My answer is not going to be that long...😉 First of all, have you scanned the car for codes? Have a look at live data? The transmission fluid usually have a circuit that runs to the front of the car and back to the box... and yes, that is to help cooling down the oil... but usually has nothing to do with the AC... but don't quote me on that, and it might be different on that car, or dependent on which part of the world you are. As for the air con, same thing, have it scanned and live data checked... also take it to be checked for leaks... I am not sure how helpful this is, but at the moment I can't think of anything else... LM Auto Repairs thank you for getting back with me. I appreciate it very much. Now I don't know if you are talking codes as in if the engine light is on or not but it is not on. But I will have to let my ex know of this box you talk about for the transmission. Yea the A/C has had a leak since I bought it which was in 2007 and I just kept having more R134 put in with sealer and it would last the summer and that would be it. If I were to put just regular R134 without the sealer it would be gone in 2 to 4 days depending on hot hit it is out side. The most important thing for me right now is to make sure my transmission is ok and I will have him start with that box. Thank you for your help. 😆😊

Happened to me today. But I saw another post. The guy yanked the steering to the right then put the key in. It should free the steering where. Then turn right then left and start the car. Works like a charm and no whacking needed

Should have sent PCB to Louis and let him replace the chip, lol. I wonder if the chip could have been removed and replaced with one from a donor board. But without schematics and knowing what the pins do, probably not. I feel your pain on specialized repair and needing another tool, that is expensive. It seems the manufacturers have the ability to make simple repairs difficult due to specialization in tooling. Really enjoyed the video, especially the explanations at the end on reassembly and removal. Sometimes the most difficult part can be removal of components without breaking anything.

Larry Hurst Hi Thank you for watching and for your comment... Totally agree with you... According to the guy, he managed to unlock the NEC chip... but failed to personalise (program)... Possible could be done with a new chip... but I do not know about their availability... And yes, this type of specialised tools tend to be quite expensive... and even difficult to get hold of them... Replacing the chip with one from a donor board should work... but don't think there is many donor units out there.. as if they are repairable they go back into the car... But as I said on the video, I have no experience with this tool... so do not really know what can or can't be done...

Hi Is the gears changing, I mean is the car shifting to park or neutral? As you might know, it will only start in those two positions... Check also for codes and live data... see what is preventing the car from starting... Thank you for watching!

Hi. I know it's an old video but there is a way to repair those now. Cheap fix. Drill a hole in the casing to access the gear. Turn the gear unlock it. Then dismantle. Change motor. Close casing lock it by turning gear. Then place on car. There's a video on KZbin for that

The motor is not always the fix... These can fail in different ways... I had them where replacing the motor fix it, but when is the data that corrupts, that will not work... 👍👍

Just a quick comment as this just happened to me... one comment i read here encouraged me to smack/punch the part of dash where the key goes in... and it worked, i heard the motor unjam and so far after 10+ tries, the problem hasnt reoccured. If in doubt give it a whack 😊🤞🏻

I fitted an ESL Emulator. The car started but with ESP BAS Cruise and traction control errors. Only way to fix that was a complete software re-install from the dealer. $230 AUD. One year later I have ESP and Run Flat Monitor errors. Code reader says its Steering Angle Sensor Fault-I'm not so sure after all the orginal erros if this ESL Emulator is messing with electronics. After my experience my advice is if you can get the original unit repaired, then do that instead of emulator

Hi Luis good video I know you now have the IM tool . I had a c204 with ESL failure no fault codes tried to read ESL through obd with Autel IM but would not read it. I disconnected while still on car and was able to read direct and I have contacted Autel with dating logging .just incase you experience same thing with obd go direct instead with IM break out leads

Hi The only way to sort it is as per the video... as I have explained, the programmer is quite expensive, I still not have it... So, you can remove the lock and send it out to someone that can reprogram it, or just provide you with the emulator, in case your is beyond repair... Or yes, you can go to mercedes... they will fit a new steering lock... Hope that helps... Thank you for watching!

I didn’t face a weakness in battery or dimming light before , but it was raining heavily here in France , the next day I realized that doors can’t be open , no lights on cluster , no start , no click as if car is dead ... I checked the fuse box ( front and back ) all seams fine ... I noticed that front rain drain is blocked and there is moderate water trapped on the base of the fues box chamber located in the trunk ( not on the fuse box but in the same location under tail light )! Check all the fuses etc... if you haven't already... Check relays, etc.... If the car is completely dead, you most likely have a issue that is different than the one in this video...

@@koslim You can repair or replace or use emulator, many options with right equipment/knowledge. Another common issue with similar symptoms is a defective EIS, T15R fault easy to diagnose though. PS. no need to remove steering wheel ect. can remove column with still attached, save time, it will come out from front with a bit of a wiggle.

At the time I did not had the correct tools, so the EIS and keys were sent to someone I found, and he programmed the ESL emulator to the EIS... I believe you have some emulators that program themselves by leaving the key on for some time... Just research... 👍👍👍

yesterday a friend called me for his car c200 2008. the same problem as your car. we put the key ignition on . no lights nothing in the instrument panel. the steering locked. I tried to scan it with my scan tool it showed me like 12 faults in the powertrain. but wasn't able to read them. first thing came to my mind the rare BCM which is located in the rare baggage. all the fuses were good except one 30 amps was blown. I replaced it but appeared to me the fuse wasn't getting any current. I checked where you put the fuse it was all damaged. but now after I saw your video I really think it's ESL. but how can be more sure. pls if you can give a hent or something. thank you brother

I forgot to minsion that the key is normal unlike your smart key. we can put it and open switch but again no ignition nothing lights

There seems to be a feature on my 2002 Mercedes where if you don't drive it for awhile, the rear sinks, and everything locks up. Can't even turn the key. There's nothing wrong with it....just sat too long. Is there a way to reset it? Not sure if this repair is what I need.

@@LMAutoRepairs - It did this before. Sat for about 6 weeks that time. Battery is new. The mechanic said it was a feature to protect the car from being stolen? He said he had to reset it but I don't know how/what he did. Guess jumping the battery could be considered resetting. Thanks. ;-)

@@JakeMcCredieEire09 Hey sorry for the late response but yeah if you’re still having the problem. I took the Benz to my local dealer it did in fact end up being the electronic steering lock. There a tiny little plastic gear inside of the lock that engages one the key is turned in the ignition. Funny thing is that Mercedes knows about the issue is major. Luckily my car was still under manufacturer warranty so I didn’t have to pay to much but if it’s out of warranty it’s like ah $2,000 plus job. I hope this helps and wish you the best. Good luck 🍀

@@LMAutoRepairs So we took the steering lock out and with aim to save as much resources as possible, we ordered a set from ali containing motor and a tool. What we are gonna do is just the motor replacement and see if it works (we uninstalled the lock in locked position so it might be a bit tricky). We are not going to reinstall it to its original position because the motor can fail again - thus we will leave it taped somewhere. Will let you know if it works - if it does, you might use it in the future and save money on software update :))

I had some problem before... think will pay some 1500$.... I tried to change Accu, in case low voltage problem, not solve. Tried any youtube sugestion ..not solve. One day, I am forget to use safety belt and of course the alarm going on .... then ... bummm .... problem solve till now ..... The reason may be cause the sensor for ESL, power steering etc are lock off. then trigger release by safety belt alarm. all connected with sensor that activated by speed above 20 Km/h. Let all of you try .... hope solve it.

Car was jump started with ignition key in the EIS. Nothing happens when inserting key. Have run diagnostics and came up with an error on the steering lock. It needs to be replaced/ reprogrammed.

Alternatively go to Mercedes dealer cause a little stir, moan a little in the showroom they will pay a 50% goodwill contribution then you have a new modified lock fitted ( that works ) with warranty for a much lower price no stress plus they may give you a loan car........... my hat is off to you sir for digging deeper and getting to the bottom of the issue very interesting.

OK, I have no codes for the steering lock, one guy said that the key message should come up with a defective steering lock but nothing else, would work but if it doesn`t that means the coil in the key can be bad. @@LMAutoRepairs

How did you diagnose the problem without the key in the "ON" position. How did you get the code "ELV" code?I would like to be certain of the diagnosis before attempting the repair. Early in the video you state that "You turn the key and nothing happens"?? I am of the idea that the Steering lock must activate before you can turn the key?? Am I wrong about this? How do I know its not a faulty ignition switch?

Hi Plug in a scanner, an scan the car... that's how I got the code for the ELV... The will turn regardless of the status of the ELV... the ignition does not comes on, but the car network does... Thank you for watching!

@@LMAutoRepairs All other forums and videos on the topic of faulty ESL for Mercedes Benz agree that the key cannot be turned until the sound from the ELV is heard indicating it has been activated. Possibly what matters is if it has failed in the "lock" or the "unlock" position" but I myself and many others have found that the Status of the ELV most certainly is a factor in determining rather or not the key can be turned. Please do not promote "False information" Thank You.

You might be correct... done this ages ago... Can't remember all details from all the repairs I have done... Regardless of that, the network of the car comes on, and allows you to scan it... if an ordinary scanner fails to do it, do it with star... which allows you to force ignition on...
