I drive a W203 C200K Kompressor that my father used to drive, until he was medically unfit to drive due to his age. It's a 2003 model which he bought in 2008 and was previously used in Japan and had 20,000 kms on the odometer. This is a right hand drive model for Malaysia and the car itself was assembled in South Africa. The engine is the 1795cc version and is supposed to have the same power and torque figures as the previous 1998cc engine (163 bhp, 230 Nm). I've never driven the first generation W203 with the 2 liter engine, but my cousin who has driven one extensively, told me that this car didn't feel as quick to the 100 km/h mark, compared to the 2 liter version. I'm not sure if Mercedes' technical specs for the 1.8 liter variant could be trusted as even if the supercharger's boost pressures are higher than the older C200K with the 1998cc displacement, what are the odds that two different engine models have the exact horsepower and torque numbers? 🤔 Anyway, for a 21 year old W203 my family's car has only traveled 68000 kms but in the last five or six years, its driver side door handle had come off (just like this video mentions) and a few months ago even the hand brake release lever snapped off, much to my surprise. 🙄 We've had an old Mercedes 230.6 (W115) and a Volvo 240 GL before the W203 and neither car's door handles have ever come off, lol. 😅 The biggest headache this W203 is giving me is a current drain problem that empties the battery within 3 days unless I have the engine started daily. Our usual garage hasn't been able to identify the root cause but the interior front or rear dome light is the prime suspect. The car is still with the garage since a week ago. Other migraine inducing issues include the glove compartment CD changer being detected by head unit intermittently. If the battery has been drained and recharged overnight, the head unit will initially play the CD changer but will show that annoying "No CD changer" message after the car has been driven for a few times. The rear head rests have long had their plastic covers broken due to heat from the sun but I can't find replacement parts for them. It's sad that the W203 isn't one of those Mercedes models that are "engineered to last". I've actually spotted more W124 models on the road, compared to the W203. 😐 Thanks for the educational video, just subbed to your channel! 👍🏼

Unfortunately, you forgot the most important typical W203 errors. The suspension has significant weaknesses, with the control arms often breaking, and the suspension doesn't last long either. If the car is constantly squeaking, which often happens, it's usually the so-called squeak bushings, also a control arm problem

must be low mileage? mine had leaking oil magnets, chain kit, PCV kit, intake air tube replaced., The interior is very breakable, center console lid always breaks, mine is replaced, sun visor covers also broke (and the passenger one :D), had to replace them, door lock actuator spring of back left door was broken, had to replace it, ac stepper motor flap was broken, had to replace it, turn signal didntworked properly, had to replaced it, mine is pre face- so had to replace instrument cluster display and fix its backlight (very common issue)... these thing are very common to break on w203 and probably you have low miles and that's why didn't encounter them already

for the nylon intake hose if yours is still good, wrap wide insulation tape nice and tight around it i did mine like 3 years ago still holding up good saved me having to replace it and makes it not fall apart.

Another very common problem on the Kompressor model is the crank case breather /vacuum hoses. One below the airbox and the other above the airbox. The lower one always fails as it rubs on the airbox.

There's one under the airbox and one under the supercharger. I needed to change the one under the airbox and did it myself. But the other requires removal of the supercharger, which I don't think I'd ever attempt.

that's the begging of the problems, miles after you change the hose above the intake manifold, the ones behind the supercharger and the actual pcv valve also fail and needs replacing, so its better to change the whole pcv kit and in the process change the supercharger oil

in my case was the alternator, so had to replace it - same symptoms, grinding noise for the first 1,2 seconds on cold start - every single time, found cool mechanic that properly diagnosed it - for 150 USD had my alternator rebuild and mounted back - brushes were very worn and the two bearings were bad

Lovely video you are right about most of the points but depending on your region in my own case is the passenger side door handle. Can you also recommend the best type of oil for most of us in Africa plus for the intake air hose there is an after market plastic intake hose which doesn't break.

Castro GTX is the best oil recommended by Mercedes 5W 30 makes the engine very quite but need to service at good time to keep things in check

i have c200 kompressor with automatic, city driving is 12-14 liters per 100 km, but depends on traffic and if i use ac, on the highway its about 7.8/8.5 liters per 100 km depending on speed (in my country can drive with 140 km/h on highway )

Driver's door handle yes. BUT have you checked your headlight light wiring insulation? Pull off dust caps an look. If you go in there to put in H7 LEDS get ready for depression. No replacement wiring loom.

The intake hoses are expensive for what they are. I redid mine with roll of black duck tape. They soon get dull and blend in

Yes I have had these, but the worst one is the $12 hose that needs half the engine to be removed to replace a 6" long, 1/2" wide hose which will have split. That job is a heartbreaker! Also the contact plate in the 722.6 transmission. dirty, crappy job and I guarantee it will wee ATF on you at some point!! Oh, and when it is fixed, you need to buy a £149 scanner to tell the car it is OK again. Great car to drive tho!! I have had 3 s203 Estates in a row now.

@Nemz, I picked up a neglected 2005 MB C class 180K last month the car only had 50k (one owner from new) I’ve already replaced the rocker cover + spark plug gaskets (leak in the spark plug wells) and replaced a dodgy vacuum line to the intake manifold which caused the p0171 EML (common fault) with a ramair silicon one, its needing some upper wishbone control arms (common fault) as they knock hard and you can feel it especially on our horrible roads here in the UK, apart from brakes and your typical serviceable items, she’s been pretty good so far touch wood, I am going to just keep up with regular maintance so hopefully she’s still got some more life great video btw 👍

I have a Mercedes Benz C180 KOMPRESSOR W203 2001/3 petrol with 96,000km and it is having a lot of fuel consumption and failure to idle, the diagnostics give the code P0301 and P0304 cylinder misfire detected and I want to change the ignition coil and the spark plugs, I am in an area where I will have to do things myself because I do not have a Mercedes agent etc. 1-I would like to know how many spark plugs my car takes so I can import them and how many ignition coils. 2- The spark plugs thread size M12 x 1.25 or M14 x 1.25, and if you think I need to lose anything else in this maintenance please do not hesitate to give me a tip. If you can recommend a website to buy the material and brands that have a long lifespan it would be a great help. Thank you in advance.

Hey Nemz. Great video, definitely can relate to #1, #2 and #4. However, the biggest issue on my C180 is that it will not exceed 80km/h and limits revs at 2 500rpm. [ even with the gas pushed to the floor - almost like there is a fuel cut ] Do You know what the problem may be? Thank You.

Have you any vacuum leaks is the kompressor wining too hard .. usually they don’t don’t break the last very long but check that your injectors are getting enough fuel from the pump check your coil packs also check alternate bad fuel slows them down as the age so start tracing from vacuum leaks to fuel supply then check coils alternating cuz plugs would have thrown a miss fire code so that’s ruled out

HI i think it depends on which country your in but if your in Ireland i can give you alot of information in terms of road tax and garage prices for services otherwise these c180 dont need much for repairs as the dont break easily

@@kingsleyogunedo-uq3wm look at those small issues I mentioned also when you buy the car do an oil change coolant change fuel and all filter change for peace of mind don’t ever believe the car was serviced most Irish cars never see oil changes until the sold to next man i can’t refer you to any work shop I usually work on my own cars and don’t work on friends or customers how ever depends on area your I’n the should be few good garages there google them if your going to do any work on it yours self even better save you money you can watch some of the videos I did related to fixing most issues I mentioned cheers

@@nemzrepairs thats not true all the M271 have timing chain issues and the period that you talk about 2003-2006 all c180 are using m271, the old m111 engine is reliable but after 2002 or early 2003 its not mounted anymore

You missed a very important one. Camshaft gears and timing chain. The gears wear down to no teeth. You can get away with chain jumping 2 teeth but don't drive it

That’s can be happening for a number of reasons first is the temperature to high or normal when this happens is your key and mobiliser working properly lastly when it cuts off after cranking is it receiving fuel from tank so start with fuel when this happens pull out the feed pipe and crank to see if fuel coming then check your coil packs it getting spark if ignition is okay then look at the immobilise could be key loosing memory on the go

For Five grand it’s a lot as the value for this car has depreciated over the years unless the car is as good as new cosmetics in bodywork and engine is as in very good condition otherwise you can pick up same car for 2000 to 3000 in very good condition as-well

@@nemzrepairs ​ Thank you for the swift response.. I think It's 5 grand because it's an automatic, and also I live in sweden so cars are generally more expensive for some reason.. From the pictures on the car dealer website, it seems to be in very good condition, the only issue i can can see is that it might have a cam shaft magnet leak, since the face of the engine where the cam shaft magnest are look kind of brownish, but other than that the engine looks new, but I will have to see it in person to determine that.

Yep all sorted now , didnt change the tensioner itself as the spring was fine ( and took a breaker bar to move ) i just replaced the pulley on it with a new one @@nemzrepairs

those are only smaller problems with this car, the biggest and most common one is rust, not only on this car but almost on every merc between 2000-2008 some other problems Driver side doors and locking electric seat adjustments gearstick tends to wear a lot, even after 200000 Km Just an overall poor interior design materials SRS error (almost every merc old like this, has this error my advice, unless you really love this car, STAY AWAY FROM IT. Just do yourself a favor

the srs one is bc of faulty passenger occupancy sensor, can fix it for 20-30 bucks at some codding dude with DAS, and almost every car that is from 2000 to 2010 at some point have this sensor failed, my old mazda 626 had the same issue but there had to plug an emulator that simulates passenger at the seat all the time. the problem is that after the mod its not good idea to have baby seat at the front seat
