Decided to Re-Fill the Hydraulic Reservoir in my Mercedes E550 Convertible on my own in order to save the money and time it would take for the dealership to do the job. I've also added some information regarding an issue with the Hydraulic Lines in these cars and a possible solution.

Thanks for the video I had the same issue with my 2011 E550. After doing the refill the hydraulic fluid leaked out three weeks later. I'm taking it in next week to have both Hydraulic Cylinder's rebuild 🤑

Man, I had to subscribe to your channel. Props for posting videos on KZbin for 16 years. Yes, I was interested in a better way to repair the hydraulic lines for the top so I did some research. Heck, now I'm watching your videos.

@@GrayTrend Cool and thanks! It's always nice when people connect here due to an interest in similar cars. There's an E550 cabrio on one of the auction sites and I had remembered the car wizard video so I started digging and found your video.

Thanks for the comment! Yes, it's a huge risk. I've been lucky so far. Still driving the car and having fun with it. It's a risk versus reward thing for me. Hope you find something you love and have a blast with it!

11 hydraulic cylinders in a sl 500 top. About 4k to repair them all at the same time. Much more to do them 1 at a time as the seals fail. Apparently if you re-seal 1 of them the increased pressure in the system results in others failing quickly. Then there's the ABC (hydraulic) suspension issues........... also 5k kind of fix. Pass

I thought it interesting with hydraulic fluid, that it could be refilled vice the requirement of having to change the fluid.
@GrayTrend

Yes, I was surprised about this too. I was under the impression the fluid reservoir was under pressure and if I removed the bolt, fluid would spray out into the car. Looks like that's not the case.

So, how much do you think that would have cost taking the car into the shop?
@GrayTrend

I read in the Mercedes Forum (Benzworld.org) that it costs around $200.00 to get the fluid re-filled at a dealership.

I actually have the 2016 model of that car, the hydraulics look the same... I have an issue with my rooftop, the lid wants to open but my back window doesn't lift up. I noticed my hydraulic oil is on the lowest level. Would such a refill solve my problem you think? And, apart from that, It doesn't cause any other issues to just open up that reservoir? It's not like it's under pressure or vacuum or something?
@GrayTrend
@GrayTrend 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. When my car is turned off and I'm not attempting to open or close the top, the reservoir is not under pressure (similar to when I opened the reservoir in my video). Wouldn't hurt to give it a try and re-fill the reservoir. If that doesn't help, then you'll most likely need some professional help. Best of luck to you!!!

@@GrayTrend thank you for your advice. The oil and syringe are ordered and will arrive by may 10th. Strangely enough the mechanism did work today. I have a theory -> perhaps the rubber seals were still wet and after drying stuck to the chrome. I had just washed the car when I last closed the roof. Today I’ve treated the rubber seals with product. I also treated the chrome. Tomorrow morning I’ll test the roof again (I didn’t want to push my luck today since I’ve not yet refilled the reservoir). I’ll keep you posted on how things progress if you like.

BTW, I just checked my cabriolet and the reservoir is still at the max level. Looks like I'm still good for now.

I have an update for you. At some point, the top actually did open by itself. At first there was this tearing sound, likely it was the rubbers that were stuck to the chrome. I’ve treated both the rubbers and the chrome. The problem seems solved. I’ve also noticed that the oil level is nearly in the middle when the top is open. So I think for now I’ll do nothing at all. Thanks for your advice though, it was very much appreciated! Great video by the way 👍
