did you have to use new rivets? or did you use screws with the new regulator?

Use which ever you have I had rivets and a rivet gun but nuts and bolts will work just not too long

I have one of these cars with the same problem, but cant afford a new regulator. Does it look like there is a way to rejoin the cable ?

No I don’t believe so. Try LKQ they may have a second hand one that you can afford.
