We are actively considering both the GLC and the X3 - you are 100% right, it really comes down to price and I agree with you, I actually enjoy driving and like feeling engaged as the driver. Maybe it’s because I’m older and grew up having to learn how to operate a vehicle without all the fancy tech. We had to know how to parallel park because the car couldn’t do it for us. We had to learn how to use our mirrors to change lanes and safe driving practices because there was no such thing as “lane assist.” I think the more aggressive styling of the BMW is attractive and appreciate that BMW is less expensive for an absolutely top notch driving experience. BMW is a winner for me. Thanks for the side by side comparison- really helpful!

i believe the X3 is due for an update in 2025, including the iDrive8 system. If you care about having the latest, you may want to wait for that one. Current one is still very nice thought, especially if you like having climate buttons outside the screen.

X4 ftw. I did test drive GLC 2023 and my wife who pays attention to details discovered it was full of plastic inside, front and rear. mercedes looks shiny to catch your eye but it's just going down in quality

I shopped all of the upscale SUVs and found that, for me, the top 3 were MB GLC, Audi Q5 & BWM X3. I purchased the GLC and went back the follwoing year and purchased a GLA which I found to be smaller but quite comparable to the BMW X3. There was no single catagory in which the GLC did not outshine the BMW X3.

I currently lease that X3, I lease a new vehicle every 3 years and my previous two leased vehicles have also been X3's. Two weeks ago, while on vacation, I ended up with a virtually new GLC as my rental, the GLC only had 4000kms on it. My current X3 lease is up in 1 year and I will be switching over to the GLC. The interior was much better and roomier, the seats a lot more comfortable. I am 6'1" with a bad hip, that was just replaced, and I prefer that GLC rental over my X3 for comfort. The driving ability of the GLC totally surprised me, the 9 speed shifted effortlessly. I could go on a lot more but for me that GLC rental sold me on Mercedes, almost to the point of I may return my X3 early and get a GLC.

I drive both since the 90s. I always got a Mercedes and a BMW in my garage. Now I have a BMW X1 and Mercedes GLC. I really love the driving experience of a bimmer, ma interiors and that plush feeling in a Mercedes is much better.

BMW is very conservative and just decided to keep the same design concept with the x3. Don’t blame the guy saying it’s an older model because the Merc is nicer and you can’t except that fact because you own an x3.

I was considering the GLC - the tech dazzled me! At my wife's insistence I went for a test drive of the X3 - no comparison. Exactly as you say, I was "driving" the X3, not being driven as in the GLC - and the tiny bit of turbo lag I experienced in the GLC was gone. It also felt more like I was driving a car than an SUV. I agree the steering on the X3 is, in my description, a bit "sloppy" in comfort mode but right on the button in sport, or as I keep mine now, in Individual Sport mode (surprised you didn't notice the difference in steering when in Sport Mode) . And.... strictly a vanity issue, but the Brooklyn Grey paint with the black trim package really dresses the X3 up. I just wish we had a autobahn here in Pennsylvania so I could try the speeds shown in the review!! Enjoyed your comparison very much -- Thanks

My choice would be the GLC. The styling is cleaner and more attractive, both inside and out. The BMW's styling is a bit busier which doesn't work for me. I had an X3 M40i and while it handled well, i never felt comfortable in the driver's seat and the ride was overly stiff where it didn't feel like a luxury car. I understand it's a "Jr M" car but it never felt relaxed enough.

Styling looks like a girls car on the Mercedes. The 4 Cylinder must fit your girly personality. The X3 is very comfortable. I haven't driven this new GLC, but the last GLC was not comfortable at all compared to the X3 tbh...Also the X3 is getting a full redesign in 2024-25

I have both in 2023…. Got the GLC for my wife but unfortunately I find myself driving that more. It is better than the X3. Only diehard BMW fans don’t want to accept the truth. And if your analysis ends in a tie...don't forget about your local dealership for each; its location and servicer reputation. Didn't impact my decision as both brands sold in the same location by the same large dealership group here in the U.S. Lithia is the #1 publicly owned dealership group. I too, am of the older generation and prefer the simpler, less flashy BMW interior that still offers tactile controls verses the over-reliance on multi-level touchscreen controls. That too, was another reason we've ordered the 2023 x3 with iDrive 7 verses the upcoming x3 model.

I’ve tested both today I prefer by far the exterior design of the GLC but the interior of the X3 is handsome. The only negative point about the X3 is that it drives like a sedan and not an SUV as the seats positions are very low

Thanks again for another excellent detailed review. BMW (own) would still be my choice. GLC for looks/tech and X3 drive/ease. Another consideration is where you live, BMW XDrive is superior for driving in snow/rain. GLC would be a better choice in sunny and warmer climates.

I had a GLC 2020 that got totalled in an accident. I now have a 2023 X3 since the New GLC is not yet available in Japan. I'm yet to see if the X3 is really better than the new glc since I like Benz more. Benz + that x3 doesnt have: Remote Start, Love the Burmester, more LED color choices and effects, air-sus, Seat Massage, self lane change. X3 + that GLC doesnt have: Way Better Auto Pilot, 3d Harman Kardon Sound, Sporty direct Steer feel, Heated Steering wheel, Apple Watch and Phone NFC key means no need to bring the keys!, More quietter than the old GLC. Actually useable Self Parking mode. I had 2 benz and not once did the self parking worked, while the x3, one try and it's all automatic! You can close your eyes while it parks itself.

I think the GLC is way better! The BMW, is boring out dated. I just don’t like the interior in the BMW. My wife’s had Mercedes since 2010, she had a regular GLC 300 then got her the AMG GLC 63, wow!! What a beast. Waiting for the Coupe 43 to come out. To bad no more V8 fir the GLC..

Make no mistake: the beautiful interior on the GLC benefits from the very nice "enhanced ambient lighting" option. Mercedes is known for delivering cars without it. I bought a "GLC 300e AMG-LINE" which should have been equipped with this option. Well the car was delivered without it and basically they said: "Bad luck Mr. customer: there's nothing we can do about it. It's due to a shortage of semi-conductors". If you don't believe me, ask your dealer: They have an internal memo explaining this problem. Of course: NO REFUNDS and NO “RETRO-FITTING”. I got a lawyer envolved and the offerd 1400 EUR to spend in their dealership. I refused so we will go to court. Sad but true story.

Congratulations for the review, Thomas! I have already chose the X3 . I don't like de interior of the GLC. I hate that big tablet and also a lot of cheap plastic on the midle console and those hideous fake exhausts. I deed not test drive-it so I can't say nothing about the way GLC drives. But I deed test-drived the Q5 an hour after the X3 and in my opinion the X3 is way better than the Q5 and more roomier inside. Congratulations again and all the best!👏

Story about BMW and Harman Kardon. When they meet to discuss proper integration probably 12-15 years ago, BMW actually asked HK what BMW could do in their car design/construction to improve sound! HK asked for more space around the subwoofer. BMW did it.

I just found out yesterday that the 2023 MSRP for the USA model GLC 300 4MATIC SUV will have a huge price increase. It will increase from the 2022 $45,850.00 to a ridiculous and very high $49,100.00. Plus you have to add on top of this huge MSRP amount the destination cost of $1,150.00 (+$100 from 2022). To summarize you will pay $50,250.00 without adding ANY one single option. I think Mercedes has made a huge mistake in its pricing and is extremely greedy. To summarize.... the 2023 GLC is more expensive by $3,350.00 over the 2022 GLC.......OUCH. PLUS ..... there are unscrupulous MB dealers who want to charge us extra dealer profit over this already very high and ridiculous high MSRP. I will NEVER deal with these greedy dealers. I think I will start looking for another car company who would love to have my business. I do not like Mercedes anymore.

I'm not keen on SUVs, but I do like vehicles if that makes sense, that said the X3 has great styling, but I always respect Mercedes nonetheless, I'm a BMW type of guy, so that is the clincher.

@@ams3894 i guess you have already bought your SUV however I bought the GLC and I'm already tired of it. Within 3months it lost the wow factor. Now I'm looking to buy the BMW. Which did you go for?

@@oluo6756 I got BMW X3 2023 model and I love it. Now I got it for more than 6 months and no regret at all. What I love about X3 is it is more roomy since the central console does not take too much space and so more leg rooms. All gadgets and buttons are manual (You can still use them with the touch screen though) and so more convenient to use while driving. It also looks bigger from outside even though the prices are very similar. In fact, I bought C200 just before this X3 and it has very similar interior to GLC. Of course, it is smaller and I ended up trading in with X3. Hope this will help.

I’m a huge BMW fan but their interiors haven’t been that visually appealing to me lately. Too many stupid sharp angles that lead to nowhere, the screens look awful, just plopped on the dash, Mercedes’ interiors have more class and elegance. As I said this is coming from a huge BMW fan. Also the taillights on the BMW are awful in this specific case.

I chose the GLC Hybrid - a lot more to the car and is a lot more comfortable to drive. I only wish they had a fast charger in the UK! They do on the continent, so why are we so disadvantaged? Thanks Mercedes!

I'm just in process of buying one of these two and have driven x3 yesterday and glc today. I'm little taller, but disagree on the space in the cars. In BMW you have more space for driver (a little bit), in glc you have more space for passengers in the back - more legroom. Seat comfort - I'd rather give plus to mercedes (I drove alcantara plus fake leather). In both cars you can lower the seat to the maximum and have similar feeling. I am changing from g20 3 series exactly to sit higher up and more on the sit, than in it, although you can lower them both for sedan like experience. Also x3 is a little taller, so GLC has more normal car feeling, while still being high up on the level of bus drivers.

Difference in interior space between X1 and X3 is because of the engine mounting. X3 has longitudinally placed engines and X1, being on Mini platform, has transversal placed engine and more space for the interior

Excellent review - thank you Thomas. BMW X3 interior is a little bit outdated but I prefer buttons as well than all on the screen. The GLC interior is too much light here and there, especially in the night. Not sure if I would want to see and feel this always. I wouldn‘t pick any of them.

Very interesting comparison and great comment. I agree with the reviewer. I think that these two cars are dedicated to two different groups of customers. Mercedes for those who value luxury, design and appearance, i.e. "The best or nothing". BMW for those who value the "rawness" of driving - i.e. as in the BMW slogan "Sheer Driving Pleasure" Congratulations and best regards.

Why wait so long for a comparison? There will always be updated and new models, and not all of them get released at the same time. People decide between cars all the time, and they dont care about industry logic / life cycle times
