I've worked on the OM642 engines a lot over the years and one of the biggest items forgotten about is the PCV valve on the back left hand side of the engine. The diaphram ruptures and allows the oil to work its way towards the "Y" pipe. This in turn makes people think that the turbo seals have gone and replace that when it's afaulty PCV all the time. be careful with those orange seals as they are a one time use only. they might look like they are ok, but can not seal properly.

I was just going to say the same thing. Those rubber seals are a joke. I have a CLK with that engine. The first thing I did with it when I got it was strip it and change the oil cooler seals etc. etc. and the valve at the back of the left hand CAM. If Mercedes just put a bit more thought in their design they could make an engine that was really hard to keep running 😋 I suppose they must think the same what with their new Renault engined beauties.

Those fine wires are fusible links designed to burn out if the actuator is overloaded so that the actuator motor etc. doesn't burn out . The reason the actuator becomes overloaded is that the variable vanes in the turbo that the actuator is moving become gunked up with exhaust soot . It is very likely that the turbo needs to be removed and the variable vanes cleaned out . Hold a magnet next to those clips when removing them .
@ikocheratcr2 жыл бұрын
I do not think so... The ST motor controller has current limit protection, so the only way those links will blow, is if there is major short in the module itself. Also those Al wire are very thick and can handle high current. There is a fuse the powers this module, along with other modules in the engine.

nice video - just couple things to mention... 1- code scan needs to be done before you disconnect anything to be sure there is no other faulty parts. 2- most probably part on seat was old part already removed from car - normally you cant replace actuator just like that. 3- dust in actuator actually is from grinding internal gears since unit itself is sealed

Hi Luis great work from you I see you went the extra mile to make sure that there will be no comeback. Regarding the question if these actuators need programming or not, in this current week I had a similar job it was on a Mercedes’ sprinter with om 642 engine ,the turbo actuator melted because there no heat shield on the turbo.The customer supplied a used actuator and I noticed after replacing the actuator when reving the engine the turbo would over spool. The trick to solve the problem was the to cycle the ignition key three or more times and then it will set and rev one hundred percent Like I said this was my experience on a Mercedes sprinter

I had a problem with a turbo actuator/solenoid (more actuator than solenoid) on a Land rover, I sent it to Altronics for testing and they sent it back unrepairable, the worm and quadrant teeth had worn causing it to jam, TBH if I'd looked more closely I would have seen it, I had to buy a new one, but every one wants to sell you a complete turbo (sorry mate not available separately), anyway I managed to get one and fitted and hey presto job was done, but there are different types as Luis alluded to in the video, they look the same but you have to get the right one for your turbo/vehicle..

I have a W211 E220 170Hp, 350000 km no problems at all, but in one year mechanics changed 5 times the intercooler pipes (they were popping out from the intercooler and one time even blow), last time replace intercooler too and yesterday again another pipe pop out while I was traveling on autopilot at 80kmh/1500 rpm. No engine check on dashboard. Do you think this actuator can be the cause of this? Many thanks for your videos!
@LMAutoRepairs Жыл бұрын
Could be an overboost condition, though I guess the car should flag it... Scan the car, check live data while driving and see if is overboosting, if is not, I would say either the pipes have being fitted wrong or they are of poor quality... If is overboosting, you need to check the turbo charger system... the issue in this video, causes trouble codes, but proper checks needs doing to establish exactly what might be wrong... 👍👍👍

This low standard is the norm in the industry and quiet frankly it’s absolutely tolerated and perhaps even wanted. From the shareholders of the conglomerates to the owners of dealerships to the mechanics all the way down to the customers. If the customers would stop accepting these mediocre results and absolutely insane invoices something would change. Either the dealerships in question would go out of business because customers would stay away or on the other hand the quality and pride would drastically improve for the better. But as long as 99% of the world’s population is dumber than any other generation before and just takes anything presented at face value nothing will change. Quiet the opposite will happen. Worst quality, more expensive invoices. And honestly, why would anyone change without demand for change? Dealerships are legal money printing machines for the owners and shareholders on the breaking backs of their dumb and uneducated customers. On the flip side, it’s good for us who do have moral compasses point straight north. We make money at the side and the customer base who wants to come to people like us is growing daily.
