One important piece of information you left out is that the rubber and the plastic bump stop tabs on the articulating arms have to be removed so that the boot can open an extra cm or two. If this is not done, the old struts are difficult to get out and the new ones almost impossible to get in.

I checked again and have no idea which bump stop you mean. I skipped no step when changing struts on my car. Perhaps there was a change in production, I worked on a 2002 SLK 230.

Oh ok, my apologies. I have a 2008 R171. Perhaps they have different hinges I don't know. My hinge has a rubber insert on it that stops the hinge from opening too far. It has to be removed to fit or remove the struts.
