Mein Vater hatte einen BMW 740d e38. Nur ein Wort : Das ist der brutalste Diesel den BMW jemals gebaut hat. Und die damalige Vollausstattung lässt nichts zu Wünschen. Den e65 hatten wir auch auch mit Vollausstattung aber an den e38 kommt kein Fahrzeug heran das gebaut wurde und gebaut wird. Das nannte man deutsche Wertarbeit

When you have the chance to drive and compare Mercedes and BMW models from the early 80s today, it's hilarious how ahead of their time BMWs were. An E12 BMW versus a W123, for example. I like Mercs, and admire the solidity of the engineering in the pre-Schrempp days, but back in the day, for a driver, BMWs were like cars from an era ahead of their Stuttgart competitors.

I had X5 and I was disappointed when I saw what crap that is. Nothing can compare with Benz,especially now in these days. My first car was BMW 2002 and very few people know that without that model BMW would be familiar only to historians. BMW is for kids,Benz is for serious people.

Dragan Pantelic I agree that the W140 is a fantastic car, and that today, some of the Mercedes saloons run their BMW equivalents pretty close for driver enjoyment. A lot of that has to do with the fact that BMW has surrendered its pursuit of sharp and rewarding dynamics in favour of appealing to a more mainstream market. They're making front wheel drive cars now, for Gawd's sake. However, if you read my post, what I wrote was that back in the '80s, it wasn't close at all. Drive an E12 and a W123 back to back to see what I mean. I have mixed views about the X5, but dynamically, it sure as hell beats the pants off an equivalent M class, especially when you step back a generation of both cars. I'd say that today, Mercs and BMWs are aimed at exactly the same buyer. Same as Jaguar. There's so little to separate them now in terms of how they drive, model for model. I don't include Audi, because they drive like crap and are bought by people that know damn all about that, but like how they look.

Dragan Pantelic It depends on how much you enjoy driving, Dragan. By and large, Audis look better than BMWs to my eyes, and most have nicer cockpits, but AUDIs drive, to someone that enjoys driving, like planks. Over-servo'd brakes, lifeless steering, over-firm damping and crap secondary ride. And yes - that's pretty much all of them that I've driven, and I've driven a lot of them. Plus, Audi sling the engines so far out front of the front axle line that most Audis understeer like pigs at the limit. If you enjoy a bit of fun and feedback when driving, AUDIs are a distant second to BMWs. There are exceptions, like the original S8, the R8 and the ur-Quattro. Anyway - stick to your S-Classes. They're nice cars, and the W140 is one of my favourites after the 450 SEL 6.9.

colin5577 I had AUDI A8 4.0 tdi,I had BMW 730i,X5... I have now S 350 td and CLS 500,I am talking from my experience as owner of these cars. CLS is excellent car too,but not like W 140. One thing is when you drive it once,another thing is when you have it. Only today I was driving 500km with my S class,so comfortable that I cannot describe. After 500km driving with X5 I was like minced meat! That's a fact! Regards

Mir scheiß egal was hier von nem Typen geschriebn wird der mit dem 1,6er Clio zur arbeit fährt. ich sitz in meinem E32 und spiel mit dem Uralten Cdwechsler und Oranage Verpixelten Board PC bin glücklich und zufrieden, lass mich in den büffeledersitze und kratzt mir am hintern, wenn wer blöd aus seinen Leasingwagen guckt Auch wenn der Kübel 25 Jahre alt ist und verdammt schwer lenkt und fährt, ist das Ding vom Handling und Biss immer noch besser wie der Gaudi und der Benz in Vergleichbarer Größe. Wann ich das Ding im Winter ohne Kat mit dem K&N System starte höhrt sich das an wie wenn eine B52 gerade am landeanflug ist. Simpelste Bauerntechnik alles einfach und Verständlich und vorallem für die Ewigkeit gebaut solche Wertearbeit gibt's heute nicht mehr , heute muss ein bauteil schnell kaputt gehen damits ja Geld beim freundlichen lasst aber hier nicht die Ersatzteile sind auch günstiger im Vergleich zu anderer Modelle und Marken. Und für den Jugendlichenfahrstil den ich habe kann ich mich über 14L auch nicht beschweren immerhin haben 2 1/2 mehr Benzin Platz wie im VW Polo, die 2 Tonnen wollen auch bewegt werden und das schafft er auch egal was für ein Gang drinnen ist der zieht dem Berg hoch als wers Bergab. Der Wagen will gedreht werden natürlich nur wenn er warm gefahren ist aber dann schiebt er wie ein überlanger 6er Das ist der große unterschied in der S klasse will ich hinten sitzen und eine cohiba rauchen beim 7er will ich fahren und drängeln und den linken Fahrstreifen beanspruchen. Und wenn mal ein Sportcoupe kommt wird es einfach ausgebremst.

Oliver Lasch Ich finde das Mercedes Design ist eher was für die Senioren. Zumindest von den meisten Mercedes Modellen in der oberen Klasse aus dem früher Jahrtausend-Anfang. Wo hingegen das Design der BMWs viel dynamischer und vor allem aggressiver wirkt.

Mercedes hat bis ende 90er sehr gute robuste Autos gebaut. Irgendwann kamen sie auf die Idee, effizient zu sein und Sparmaßnahmen durchzuführen. Die Kunden haben das gespürt und wechselten lieber zu Bmw 7er. Aber W 140 ist und bleibt ein Klassiker.

I have much Respect for the W126, but the restyling of 1986 has not mounted a V12 engine as the E32, and 560SEL and did not reach the 250 km/h. certainly the W126 was a reference for the longevity and for the sales of the model. 2 weeks ago I saw a 750iL in the workshop, I think for a break of gearbox, it is a shortcoming of this BMW...
