Go to getroman.com/RESTORE for $15 dollars off your first order of ED
treatment.
In this episode of Restore It, James and I continue to make progress on the Mercedes W123. The current paint is prepared for new coats with 800 grit sanding pads, the rust in the engine bay is shot blasted away, and the trim gets a good polish.
Sorry for the delay in vids, I've just got Rusty Nut Restorations up and running again, so head on over to that channel to see some classic Restore It content. - • Video

Great choice for a restoration. When I first saw the 123 at the dealership, I was a tech there, I thought mb was insane. Now I think it was one of the best cars they built. Ok, I'm still partial to a 280se 4.5 .

Nice work and great to be learning as you go. Re: the aluminium trim you'd have to strip the anodising before you can polish it as it's a very hard surface, what looks like water drops are stains from the ingress of water under the hard anodising. The original finish is called Bright Dipped

I’m just curious as to why you went the route of cutting and putting a patch? If there’s that much filler already and based on the patch just as much will stay, could you have not just cleaned the metal, treated it for rust and then filled over the imperfections?
@skorpius2029
@skorpius2029 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not expert in body repair by any means but from what I know you can put layer of lead over areas that need to be smooth instead of filler which as far as I know is done during car restoration.
@focusedelectronics
@focusedelectronics 3 жыл бұрын
@@skorpius2029 yeah that’s definitely an option, but if he’s leaving all the other filler that wouldn’t (IMO) make much sense either to fix on small part with cutting a patch and then lead. Really could have just done the lead without the cut. Just wondering what his process was for making the cut.
@RestoreIt
@RestoreIt 3 жыл бұрын
I would worry the rust would come back after some time and ruin what is going to be a great paint job. Cheers!

Hi buddy, a lot of work with this MB. Look, which welding gas do you use, is that a CO or mix CO+Ar? Welding spots looks not so clean. Mix CO+Ar it's is the best choice I this case , on my opinion. Anyway I wish you good luck with this project. By the way, do you have any updates regarding yours cars?

Mate, I don't know your age or experience level working on cars so I'll try to put this as plainly as possible, and since this is the internet, this might "read" as rude or condescending, but it's not intended to be that way. ✌🏼 I've been working on cars for 20+ years and I'm also a filmmaker by trade. What you see in every Restore It video covers many many MANY hours of work on this car - masking, sanding, grinding, welding, cleaning, polishing, wheeling the car outside for some jobs, back inside for others, etc. with the additional step of filming it all (ie. repositioning the camera and tripod 50 times in the midst of everything else, changing dead batteries, dumping full memory cards, etc.). THEN, those many hours of footage must be organized, assembled, and edited down into a coherent video, then the voiceover is added. It's a lot of work to release videos at this level of quality _once a month,_ never mind every single week. Try filming yourself changing the oil in your car and making a video to the same standard as Restore It and you'll discover just how difficult it really is!

Lots of differences in language. My theory is that this stems from centuries of geographic separation between the UK and USA. Much of the development of American English comes from French, Spanish and Native American words entering into the American variant of English. You'd have to dig into the past few centuries of American history for that, but since this is not the forum for that, I leave the historical research to you.

Do the owner a favor and replace the flemsostar with a beefy w116 grille star a little filler epoxy or weld in a plate to resize the top hole to make it fit but so rewarding to cruise with the best star they ever made 😀 And don't forget to fit a w109 enamel grille badge.. Those tail lights now exist DIY cob led plates And those inboard lights no need for one to be a fog make those into quad brake lights I did so many quad conversions on w123 and w126 taillights only now the led cob plates make for very bright lights to compete with today's modern cars super bright lights that make old cars look dim and dangerous. I can only wonder the bill that customer will get on that restored coup. Here in America I fit Cadillac leather or pillow seats to get the ultimate in comfort in my old merks. merk seats are hard and just not comfortable...w115 w115 they always get a seat ectomy for Cadillac power seats.
