Have seen on several sites that they stopped using the resistors in 83 but I have an 88 300E with a blue resistor (that has fallen apart) so you answered my question as to its value. Now to start the search! Thanks!

The current replacement that Bosch offers for the blue TCI coil has a tremendous rate of failure. Mine barely lasted two years. I didn't even consider that the coil could be the cause of my no start situation, because it was practically new. It was also still producing spark, but there was not enough voltage being produced to jump the gap under compression. I do not recommend buying these! Plenty of stories online, though others claim to have no problems. YMMV as they say. I ordered an original, used blue Bosch coil on ebay for under $30. Ignition system is now performing wonderfully.

Have a 1976 450 SL with idle problems. The coil in it is the Bosh silver with yellow tags and red lettering with 2 in-line resistors installed. It has an ignition box. Both resistors get hyper hot, boiling hot. I believe this Bosh coil (PN:0221122001) is installed WITH OUT resistor. Right? Final Voltage to coil at idle is 8.7 Volts. Please Help!!! Thanks a lot for all you do.

Hi Pierre , thank you for the great information . Learn a lot from your channel . I have a 92 sl 300 and would like to know more about the ignition system .. I was able to start my car today for the first time since I got it .. but after I turned it off it wouldn’t start again .. seems like there is no spark to the plugs.. how do I troubleshoot this condition? Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 1973 450sl that cranks but will not start. Not even on gas or starter fluid. Pretty sure there is no spark. It appears to have the new Bosch coil silver one. Two new resistors, but they are exactly the same. 012 078 with blue band. Wish I could send pics. What should I check. I got the car as is.

I've got a 76 450sL and it has the blue band and silver band resistor before the coil. Vehicle won't start. You stated that 76 and beyond don't use external resistors. Why would this one have them and the wiring diagram show them?

Hello i got a rare 1976 mercedes 350sel 6.9 and i put the wrong ignition coil... And one resistor ballast its cracked a little bit... The car Its cranking but its not starting.... I replaced spark plugs and cables, neutral switch, idle warmer valve and cold start valve and start ignition points....question: Can i put the external resistor blue ignition coil? Or the last one you've show the fully internal resistor ignition 1976 below benz car.... Thank you so much and really apreciated any help! Blessings!!!

I have a 250S. I just put a new coil on (Bosch 9220081054) . The old coil and the breaker points burned as the ballast resistor mysteriously appeared broken. Through the broken ceramic you can see a coil of a thick gauge wire, it sometimes reads 0.8 ohms and sometimes 1,4 and 1,6 ohms. I would like to know what resistor can I to put on. Recently replaced plugs, wires, cap and rotor on my 560L, but didn’t replace coil. Should this be an “always-replace-with-those”item or only if running bad? Seems to run well now. Thanks.

Hello how are you? I really liked your video and I have a question. I have a Mercedes 1984 Se with a w126 engine. I changed the engine coil because the old one was heating up. i put one of the bremen brand. the car runs for 10 minutes and then dies. the coil is very hot. I would like to know which model is correct and if i have to use resistor. Thank you!

i don;t have a complete understanding of it either, but it has a lot to do with the internal resistance of the coil.

Hi Pierre, I have a coil problem. 01 2.0Litre CLK. Car shudders on first daily start. Wen I re-start it straight away, it shudders again momentarily and then tick-over is smooth. Mechanic serviced it. Said its best to replace all four coils. So does it need one or all coils changed and how much do they cost on average?? 🤔 God I wish your Garage was here in Dublin, Ireland 😌 Thanks for all you do for us Pierre! Fergus, Dublin.

no, those take a special coil which is still readily available. it is smaller than all the rest
