Never have thought you would be 78 years old. You look minimum 15 years younger, especially the way you move and laugh the whole time! I hope you stay that fit and make it to 100!

I have seen nearly 12k to rebuild one of these excluding the pistons meaning you can’t over bore the darn thing. A person can drop 20k on the drivetrain and still have a ratty car… lovely engine! Great score.

It's not often I get out geeked on cars but hat off to you sir I would never have spotted the engine thing in a million years.

I think the real shocker is that you're 78?? Jesus man I thought you were like 60 AT MOST, must be some kind of preservation additive in all those Mercedes lubricants and fluids lol

Hi Kent, My 1980 300SD engine is at Metric Motors in California in about $15,000. Plus another $8,000 at Classic Mercedes in Long Beach, Ca replacing parts since the engine is out. $2,000 to remove engine and install. I will probably have to purchase more parts once it's back together. Thanks to you, I purchased a rebuilt turbo, many tools, etc. I'm glad you are around with your store and your channel. I was on a trip driving to the East Coast and back to the West Coast. I needed an oil change so I stopped in Atlanta at one of those chain oil shops. They stripped my oil filter housing and did not tell me. I did make it to Oregon with no problems. The next day I was on my way to fill up and the oil light came on I pulled over and the oil was all over the place. I had a total catastrophic engine failure. I had around 150,000 miles on the engine. The cylinder head has a crack at the prechamber port cylinder #3 - rendering it not viable. The engine suffered a major bearing failure of connecting rod #4. It must have been pounding a minute as it pretty much came loose a blew a hole in the oil pan. Smacked the block etc. Junked out the crankshaft. The pistons are very scuffed. That type of scuff damage is indicative of heat. Either a lack of oil to the piston (as there are oil squirters for piston cooling), a lean fuel condition or general overheating via the cooling system. Consequentially there are core charges that apply for the non viable bits per the initial quote. Sorry for the bad news. Mike Piston message from Metric Motors Hello Roc, Our parts sourcing is proprietary but the new pistons we use are either OE direct from Mercedes or OEM Mahle pistons on these engines. Your engine got the OEM Mahle version. New pistons include rings, pins, clips. There was a time just a couple of years ago, we had some real problems getting the pistons. Mercedes or Mahle was not supplying them but they have come back around. Same with the oil pumps about four years ago (we only use original equipment from Mercedes for the oil pumps)- but we couldn’t get them from Mercedes and they coded them as “No longer available” but then Mercedes started supplying them again.

So, rebuild my 617A. Transmission was not touched as it is in good condition (5 speed manual). Pistons (which we did not buy/change as they where ok) cost 660 USD each when we checked. My mechanic charges about 600 USD to remove/reinstall the engine (note this is on a w460). Replacing the engine cover which we could not repair cost about 4000 USD (shipping and import taxes included). Machining, springs, sleeves, and everything else included in the rebuild (except fuel pump which I'm trying to convert to M since we cannot repair the MW, estimated cost 1500 USD) cost about 7000 USD. So my total was around 13k excluding pistons/pump. Having said that, this engine was never brought to Cyprus (in Europe) and we are a RHD country so some parts where very hard to find.

I own 2 of these 300sd, a 1981 & a 1982. Grew up in these cars that my grandfather owned for more than 30 years. He passed last year and left me the 1982 or the "driver" which is still a very well-kept car. After I brought him back home from the hospital for the last time, he asked me if i would like anything of his and then said, "How about a grey Mercedes?" I recently was able to purchase the 1981 or the "garage queen" with only 50k on the restoration back in 2003, I was beyond grateful to purchase it for $6500. Well, long story short, both cars had new engines/transmissions installed in the early 2000's and various other parts. I remember as a little kid seeing these new diesel engines in a crate at the local Mercedes dealer and asking my grandfather if this was expensive? He just laughed and nodded. He said these cars would last the rest of his life and possibly more. At that time, I wasn't sure what he meant until I now own both cars and boy let me tell you how costly it's becoming to maintain them, but they are tanks. Thanks to your sharing of knowledgeable and available parts for purchase, it's help me keep them going. Though some parts I need are so difficult to find.

I can only answer the transmission one- I have a 722.3 transmission in my 1987 300D and had it rebuilt in September of last year. Total cost was $2,500 and that included all new clutch packs, bands, cleaning the valve body, new modulator valve, new neutral safety switch, new kick down cable, new pan/pan gasket/filter, and new mount. Shifter bushings replaced too along with flex disk. Very happy with the work- car shifts beautifully

Just had my OM617.912 rebuilt by Metric Motors in California. Engine had low compression due to a broken piston ring. Total cost for long block rebuild was $12,800 including shipping.

Thanks much, that is the info I was looking for. What did they do for replacement pistons. I assume that did not include the injection pump, turbo, or any other accessories. Is that correct.? I know you can still get pistons for non-turbo engines, but the Mahle pistons for the turbo engines are no longer available. Kent
@brycenkryzer33594 ай бұрын
@@Mercedessource I supplied a set of 90.90mm Genuine Mercedes pistons that I found on Ebay a number of years ago; however, Metric has a policy that if the cylinder liners are not compromised they will go to the first oversize based on the service manual. Metric gave me a credit for the pistons, but I cannot speak to where they obtained the 1st oversize. That price included calibration of the injection pump and injectors. In addition, Metric does do a complete cosmetic restoration (blasting the valve cover and cast components and replating the original Zinc plated hardware where applicable). This was for a NA engine, so no turbo. This did not include any accessories on the engine (vacuum pump, alternator, water pump, etc.).

hello congratulations on all your videos, truly enjoy them. I found a 1983 300D turbo diesel in good condition 150k miles original condition. owner asks over 10k for it, what would you advice me to offer for it ? I am a bit worried about the automatic transmission, I understand these are notorious for failing transmissions
@Mercedessource2 ай бұрын
The transmission gets a bad rap because many do not understand how to maintain and adjust it. I think many a transmission has been scrapped when it really was a simple vacuum issue. More important is the compression numbers on the engine. Try to find a knowledgeable mechanic to do a pre-purchase inspection. It is well worth the money. Remember, speedometers can be easily changed on these cars.
