Yes, this is a very sad play which shows how a person can be broken down and locked out. Today people say it is anti-Semitic play and indeed it's my understanding that it's being removed from certain curriculum in certain countries because of this. However, if we look closely at the character of Shylock, we'll see he is a father who lost his daughter, livelihood and basically everything. One cannot feel the sadness for Shylock and in so doing, be drawn into focus on man's inhumanity to man.
