No ONE - BUT NO ONE - paints a picture like Tom Waits!!!!!!! His lyrics and melodies are memorable!! You need to check out "Saving All My Love for You". Also - "Hold On" HE is unique - he will grow on you! When listening you will LITERALLY see a story unfold in your mind! HE has magnificent allusions to American life and experiences - albeit maybe a little depressing - but he notices the down and out and tries to give them life!. Regarding lyrics - simply studying the many ways he refers to the moon is memorable! Have you ever heard anyone call it a "buttery biscuit moon"?????

Love, love, LOVE Tom Waits! He has definitely gone his own way and done his own thing. He can write the most crushingly sad songs like this one, and Tom Traubert's Blues, Bad Liver & A Broken Heart, and Martha, but he can also write sweet and goofy songs like Closing Time, The Piano Has Been Drinking, Step Right Up, and Jitterbug Boy. He even did a lovely duet with Bette Midler called I Never Talk To Strangers. That's a must hear for sure. Thanks for sharing this one, D&A. 🙂 Hope you try out some more from Tom!

I saw Tom Waits in 1979 - the album Cold Beer on a Hot Night was the encores that night. I knew a bit of his music, but not a lot, and he had a huge reputation among my musician friends. I had never heard this song before that night and, whenever I hear it, it brings back the visceral blow I felt that night. I would recommend Burma Shave - there's audio live with Herb Hardesty on KZbin - which was his last encore. Quite the story, and another gut punch ending . . .

Hello my friends, I'm really happy you finally discovered Tom Waits, he's one of my all time favorite artists as well, so thanks a lot to whoever suggested this! What a beautiful first encounter and reaction, now I love you even more! Can't wait for you experiencing more of his great music and artistry with words, because he's a great musician, but for me even more he's a great poet and wrote some of the very best lyrics in contemporary music, Tom is a living legend! I won't even try to suggest a follow up as his catalogue is so vast and he made so many turns in his decades it is impossible to chose one representative song... But I would ask you to pay some attention on his two albums "Swordfishtrombones" and "Rain Dogs" as they are important milestones, but to understand why you need to hear both some of his music before and after those albums... Just pick whatever you're getting most requests for, can't go wrong with Tom anyway, hundreds of masterpieces. - I have watched enough reactions on your channel to some of my favorite artists to be sure Tom will stay with both of you until the end of your lives, a never ending journey... If ever you would have listened to all of his stuff you might still explore covers of his songs, as Tom had incredible impact on so many other artists... The most famous cover might be "Downtown Train" famously covered by Bruce Springsteen, that would be an interesting double reaction... And a secret hint for Domenika: There's a great album by some guys from Poland, sorry I forgot the name, but the album title is "Piosenki Toma Waitsa" with only Waits covers on it... Of course you need to know the originals before you can really enjoy their covers which are in Polish and quite crazy and enegetic... And there are many more great covers from artists from most different genres and all places of the world... a never ending rabbit hole... Mark this day in your calendar so you'll be able to celebrate your Tom Waits anniversaries... You will want to! Unfortunately I forgot mine, it was 40 years ago and I didn't have it recorded, unfortunately... But actually that album "Blue Valentines" was my first ever encounter with Tom as well... Peace and love from Bavaria!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Tom Waits where there are surprises around every corner (and some even come around the corner to meet you). I could tell you weren't sure what to make of him. Don't worry. That is a common reaction. I had no clue what was going on when I first saw him. But he grows on you like a fevered dream. Enjoy the journey should you take it.

So glad to see Tom Waits here on your channel. Thanks to the person who recommended him. Like many others, I've loved his work for decades. This song is from his album "Blue Valentine" released in 1978. A favorite of mine off of the same album is "$29.00" - another dark story, put to a fabulous jazz / blues track. For something more recent, I strongly suggest "Hell Broke Luce" (Official Video) from his 2011 album, Bad As Me. One of the most powerful anti-war anthems ever. "Luce" is a reference to Jeff Lucey (aka "Luce"), a young US veteran of the Iraq war who took his life soon after returning home - but it also is a condemnation of war, period. The visuals are incredible.

Or if you want to check out 'weird Tom', there's Rain Dogs, Singapore, Chocolate Jesus, I Don't Want To Grow Up, ... Sometimes he's very funny, like The Piano Has Been Drinking or Franks Wild Years. Tom makes me happy...don't believe in having favourites but Tom is my favourite artist mostly for opening my ears to the possibility of music, genre is bullshit tune is tune. Alot of people are put off by his voice and say he can't sing but it always goes straight to my heart and his lyrics are beautiful, sentimental, dark, poetic, funny, real, life affirming, yet desperate often in the same song. Own every album and they are full of delights though i started with bone machine and the later albums which are different again but been a constant companion for 30 years. If you like sad songs can also heartily recommend Scott Walker, tindersticks, divine comedy and Nick Cave all on a par with the great man in my humble opinion

We turn to sad music for the same reason we watch sad movies. It let's us know that others have troubles too. It's not just me. The writer of this letter had such a sad life that the grandest dream she could imagine was to "buy a used car lot."

I’ve always assumed a backstory where Charlie and the letter writer would sit around some slummy apartment or dive bar listening to old doo wop records and discussing what they would do when they were doing better kinda like how George and Lennie from Of Mice and Men would talk about the rabbits

There's absolutely nothing wrong with this studio recording of this song. It's wonderful. BUT... there's a recording of his performance on "Austin City Limits" where he bookends this tune with the Christmas song "Silent Night" and does a little interpolation of "Goin' Out Of My Head" by Little Anthony and The Imperials in the middle of the song. As good as this version is, the live version is probably better. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2LZaHuXoLOtaqc

Hmmmmm I love me some Tom Waits. That's music, the dark alleys, the troubled loves, the longing, the pain, the grit,... Hell yeah. (but (perhaps) for some of the recent arrivals; go in gently; please call me baby, blue valentine, I hope I don't fall in love with you and so on before you go into the grit and dirt (I was captivated within a second as a 19-year old but my lovely girlfriend at the time needed probably a year adjusting :). Tom is Lagavulin, methylated spirits, broken bottles, dirty sheets, blood, naughty word, desperation, love, cheap hotels & gut rot combined :) (not a bad actor either :)
