1957 Volkswagen Beetle: Cold Start & Tour

What a shame that someone replace the carburetor with an automatic choke version. My 1957 beetle was very easy to start. Pull the choke all the way turn the key and then push the choke and about halfway and it ran absolutely perfectly at a fast idle. Gradually as the engine warmed up you were here told you by the way it was running when to put the truck in gradually the rest of the way. Boy would I love to have mine back! Thanks for the memories.

This beetle floating in water, its air tight, thats why the doors dont close tight when windows are tightly closed, its not a flaw but brilliant.

thanks for the video. I had a 1961 years ago and one day i got in, went a block and the brakes were gone. The pin that holds the brake pedal to the master cylinder just fell out. Be sure to check that. A cotter pin held it in, but had rusted away. Brings back memories, so good some not so.

I had a 1964 that always lost it's brakes. Somehow air would get in the system and I'd have to bleed them to clear it. I never did figure out why it happened, I never saw any leaking parts.

Awesome that you kept the factory radio and speaker, I cringe when I see someone cut a hole for a generic cd player in the dash. You can get an AM transmitter that plugs into your phone on Ebay to use with it!

Very nice deluxe Beetle. Likely the seat covers, door panels and headliner are not original. Headliners were "mouse fuzz" until 1962 models. Then the perforated vinyl was utilized. Had a 1961 Beetle and a 1972 Super Beetle. Such nostalgia ...

Try pulling out the choke cable on cold days .Thats what its for. As soon as the vehicle is driven you can tell by the engine sound to back it off as it sounds like its overriding once warm.

My first car was a 57 beetle that I bought from a neighbor in 67. Am I correct that you have a newer headliner? IIRC, mine was fabric, not the newer style with all the holes. Great paint, by the way.

From what I’ve gathered over the years, the headliner must have been replaced at some point in time. All I can say for certain is that this headliner has been in the car since before 2003.

The bumper brackets are bolt on, just loosen them and lower the bumper.

Where is the reserve tank? Do you have to fill it separately?

It's built into the main tank as far as I know, there's no separate place to fill it.

In 57 deluxe and standard is virtually the same , all cars hydraulic brakes all cars crash first , only difference if you could find one would be no body mouldings and painted hubcaps and bumpers. The car is air tight , dust proof not to small. Roof lining and carpet are not original

Judging by the location of the front heating vents, this car appears to be a 1956 model, and not a 1957. In 1957, VW moved the front heating vents back several inches towards the driver and passenger for improved heat distribution.Why does the owner think this is a 1957 model year car? A check of the chassis number would easily verify the exact model year.

VW made "running changes", that is to say for instance that even after they would change model years, they would use any left over bodies or parts until they were used up, so you could have a 57 with a 56 body, or taillights, whatever.
