One other very important benefit is air filtration. The stock Mercruiser 7.4 mpi flame arrester does not filter air entering the engine. There will be damage to the valves and the rings and cylinders of the engine from the microscopic "dirt" entering the engine, just like a car running without an air filter. From a standpoint of engine damage, this K&N set up will save the owner from having to have the engine rebuilt as often as running with just a flame arrester.

I agree with you 100%. It is sometimes a controversial topic amongst boat owners. People don't really understand that the reason these setups are they way they are from the factory is for universal fitment across many different boat platforms in the smallest footprint possible. There is definitely room for improvement.
