I believe you turned the barrel 4 turns the wrong way. It is to be turned away from the cable. After the remote cable is adjusted, the slot where the shift cable end mounts can be utilized (upward) if slight additional cable travel is required to fully engage into reverse.

1, Remove lower cable from bracket. 2. Put remote in fwd 3. Adjust upper cable so that the lower cable barrel pocket and pin distance is 6". (Do not readjust upper cable anymore) 4. Adjust lower cable so it just slides on to bracket 5. turn LOWER cable barrel away from cable end 4 turns (I usually go 2) 6. Go boatin.

#3 - How do you adjust the upper cable so that the lower cable barrel pocket and pin distance is 6". Isn't that the adjustment for the LOWER cable? #5 - Isn't that the adjustment for the UPPER cable?

@@stevelattner726 💯 exactly what order he has it is right 1FORWARD ON SHIFT 2 ADJUST THE BRASS BARREL( THERE WILL BE A LINE IN CENTER OF BRASS )BARREL MEASURE exactly 6 inches from center line on BARREL to center of black hole other end . Then put back on put screw on front and carter pin in BRASS barrel. Your are DONE WITH THIS CABLE IF U MEASURED 6 INCHED EXACTLY Then top cable ADJUST BLACK BARREL UNTIL IT SLIDES ON PERFECTLY ON TOP TO 🔩bolts once it slides on easy 👌then slide back off and back off 2 whole turns away from cable then push in top bracket if needed to place back on put 2 nuts back on start boat put in Forward and N Reverse should have all .

I think you take off cables first. You can't adjust with the control hooked up. Adjust lower shift cable first. You manually push shift cable in until prop is locked. Then adjust barrel and hook up. Next adjust remote cable then attach that cable.

@@tcobalive9231 Top cable goes to remote Correct? Lower cable goes to out drive correct? When looking at my upper cable ( the one with the shift assist) it's Red plastic with no barrel. In place of a barrel is a clip with 3 positions. My issue is not locking in forward.

Make sure this switch is not stuck down, it's mounted on the shifter plate with the throttle and shit cables on the motor by carbureator

I would like an update also. 1977 gen1 alpha goes into forward dies trying to go into reverse. Probably adjusted them 20 times. It’s frustrating

Looks like you have it in forward full throttle. Just put it in forward witch is the first click and then adjust it

Correction it’s in the upper unit underneath in the front

Yes the roller on the shift lever in the outdrive was badly worn

I have an 89 Searay 22O OV Mercury Mercruiser 5.7L 260 Alpha One Gen One (pretty much the exact motor as here) and am experiencing the EXACT same thing. I replaced all the bellows and put a new shift cable kit on. It will lock in Reverse, goes into Neutral and in will almost go into forward (and will with a slight touch on the Shift Shaft slot on the lower unit with a screw driver). I did not replace the Shift Shaft lever (roller) yet it (new Lever/Roller) appears to be the exact same size and not worn. Did anyone find a fix for this?
