Excellent videos. You surely know your stuff. I'm 66, but you reminded me of my pops when I was younger.

Rob, you made this look like kids stuff. Not everybody can work on cars and boats. I remember back in the 1950s and 1960s auto mechanics were often called grease monkeys. Anyone that can work on today's cars is a smart person and you should be very proud!! Thanks for the video and I'll see you on the water!!!

@@thefishstalker7640 I know what you mean I am a retired Oroweat bread delivery salesman and worked there forty years. I have had many surgeries and am paying for it now. It has got to the point I can't take my boat out by myself. That's why I have been asking you about bank fishing at Folsom Lake for catfish. I catch them at Scotts Flat and Collins Lakes but I want to give Folsom Lake a try the coming spring.

Thanks for going over this. I did one on a Suzuki outboard (alone, mid 80’s) in my younger days and it wasn’t fun. Plus, I didn’t have a awesome helper like you did.

Thanks for the video. Very helpful. My Mercury Tech kinda told me how to change the impeller and made it sound too simple. But your video shows what it really takes to get it done. Thanks again.
@thefishstalker76404 жыл бұрын
Yea and you don't have to worry about getting the impeller blades in the right or same position they flip as soon as it starts up
@bobbarnhill85573 жыл бұрын
I made a lower unit stand out of 2x4's. The lower unit sits right in it. Much easier work up in the upright position. Its also much easier to install the impeller first. Use some dish washing liquid and spin the cap on over the impeller. Super easy. I also leave the shifter in neutral. If your working solo using a few ratchet straps to hold up the lower unit during install is a huge help..Thanks for the putting the video together.. great learning tool for the DIY.

I use a strap to hold the lower unit before I remove and then use a strap again to install the lower unit it helps to ratchet it up with the strap. Good video thumbs up.

Thanks for video Rob. I missed the linkage part. Do you have to disconnect the linkage when dropping the lower end? When your wife was spinning the prop, is that what hooks up the linkage?
@thefishstalker76403 жыл бұрын
No the linkage just slips together when you put the lower unit up, way easier than the old ones

IF you're going to do it, find a Black and Decker "Workmate" work bench. The lower unit will drop right down and then you can work on things with it in an upright position. I find it easier to remove the prop prior to pulling the lower units on either OB's or Stern drives. Saves weight as well. Oh...use a grease pencil or some nail polish/model paint to mark the exact location of the shafts relative to the case and the unit will slip right in.
@thefishstalker76404 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip I'll be looking for the workmate bench

What is the FMS? I'm not sure what your talking about, I've done the lower unit seals and water pump agin since this video, didn't see the comment until now

Question. I don’t remember which way I placed my impeller blades. I get the correct water psi throughout the throttle range but when I’m doing wide open for a time the psi gets below 10psi. Is it possible my blades were backwards or would they correct themselves with the force of water? Is it just not getting the water because of the pontoon displacement of water at 30mph?
@thefishstalker76404 жыл бұрын
Dosen't make any difference which way the blades are they flip as soon as you start the outboard
@watchingvideos43093 жыл бұрын
@@thefishstalker7640 ended up redoing my impeller. They didn’t flip after half a season of running backwards. Flipped the same impeller and now I get 20-25psi at throttle. I’ve seen videos where they flip. Mine did not though
@thefishstalker76403 жыл бұрын
Yea usually they do flip, I'm due for another one soon put 400hrs on the one, I'll see which direction I put them in , was yours correct bent to to the right looking at it upside down?

hello your video is great. during my removel I follow the MErcury manual and it says to pu the gear in neutral, I removed my lower unit before the winter to do the water pump and the the gear lub change easily on the stand. Yesterday I went to re-insatalled, the gear should now be as per manual in FWD gear. mmmmm. I know the gear housing in in neutrl cause the prop shaft turn freely both ways. How ever whent the lower unit is installed with the shift shaft handle in neutral and prop shaft neutral, whay I cannot moved the shift handle fwd or Reverse? thanks pat
@thefishstalker76402 жыл бұрын
Well just as with any manual transmission always put it in gear that way you can turn the output shaft to line up the splines! Now you will have to turn your crank to get the shifter to move , I'd recommend turning it by hand and have someone move the shifter, the lower unit dosen't always go up easy, I did mine agin since the video and really had to shake the crap out of it to get it all the way back up! Thanks for watching the videos!
@Lear3560452 жыл бұрын
@@thefishstalker7640 I tried to repositionned my shift shaft to fwd, then I push to the detent the throttle lever. I put the lower unit in place and it fits as a glove. Run it gear changed perfectly :)

Este tipo tiene de mecánico lo que yo de cura, un mínimo de cuidado a la hora de aflojar y manipular, desde luego mi motor no le dejaría tocarlo... Realmente parece un cambia piezas con muy poco tacto.
