Mercury 25Hp idle adjustment

This is what I did, probably not the dealers way of doing it.
Here’s an update, I’ve been on the water and there’s no stalling anymore so this fix seems to work good for me.

Hey Joe. Hope you've been well. So my son took my boat out other day. At end of day got caught in big storm. Motor, gas tank etc sat in 20+ minutes of downpour. I didnt think abytning of it as next day took my dad and friend out. Imnediatley noticed im only getting 50-60 percent top speed with throttle fully down. Also, as we ran motor longer and longee it started sputtering. Eventually made a popping sound, then smoke came out. Tried starting it and would try, but couldn't turn over. Gave it some time then finally started. Got to launch where it quit 100' away as it made the popping sound again and wouldn't turn over. Used trolling motor to get back. I realized half way through all that that the little valve on gas tank cap had been open the whole time the day before during big storm and gas tank must have taken on a ton of water. Tank when home last night was at half. I filled it up, with pre mixed gas/oil figuring it would help minimize the ratio of water to gas/oil. Also added some sea foam. Just curiois if you think water in gas tank causes a motor to run at half speed?? And i hope there's no permanent damage. Like could it be a coincidence of the storm, and now motor runnjng half speed? *** im only assuming that water got into the gas tank. Maybe only a little bit got in. But I'm not sure what else could be a reason for a motor to run at half speed the next day after a huge storm. The motor and gas tank got rained on for about 20 minutes pretty heavily. Anyways, I'm hoping to take the boat out in a couple days and I hope I didn't ruin it thank you so much if you have any input

Hey Mike, Ohhhh water in the gas tank is not so good. But it happens. The problem with water in your gas tank. Water does not burn like gasoline, and when it enters the combustion chamber, it can prevent the gas from igniting properly, leading to misfires, rough idling, and overall poor engine performance. All problems you described. Long-Term Issues with Water in Your Gas Tank Water can cause corrosion inside your fuel system and spark plugs keep them from monitoring your fuel delivery rate properly. I would start with spark plugs removed as to completely clean the fuel system. Let dry when completely clean. Put sparkplugs back and retry. usually works. Let me know!

@joetheboatguy5394 so sorry for delay. I ended up putting some K100 I think the marina called it, a stabilizer which burned up excess water in tank and motor, and it ran like a charm a day later! Ran great a couple days after that as well. Then out of nowhere yesterday morning, with tons of boats in the launch, it wouldn't turn over. Was so embarrassing. Tried many times then saw smoke out back of motor. Frustrated, we pushed boat off to side because my truck was already long parked and 2 boats behind me waiting. Finally got it started but I had to start it and move throttle up as fast as possible or it would die a second later. Like It would stall out thr moment it started and in idle. Anyways, got it running and once I did, it started and stayed idle no problem after that. So I 'think' it's OK but we shall see in future usage.

I have the exact same motor and boat set up, had this issue a couple times asweel and adjusted like you did. Works fine now but sometimes the motor won't start for a while when u turn the key, then it stalls and then somehow just works for the rest of the day...

Thank you for watching, First check if your spark plug is still good. I change it at least once a year. Also you can pull the nob of the choke to let more air in. This other solution I like less but could work, lift a little the fast idle until your engine is warm. Hope this help. 🤞

Just thought of something on your button that’s says pull to prime. If you turn it clockwise your idle should go higher and when warm turn it back counterclockwise 👍

@@joetheboatguy5394 thanks for all the tips, I did some work on it today and it seemed to work fine, got a new fuel line kit and installed that aswell, idle seems to be fine and spark plugs are new. If something acts up again on the lake I will have to take it to a shop and be done with it

Could you show me WOT on your engine to see how far round the black plastic piece goes as mine seems to have a load more room to move when WOT - the part just above the throttle linkage

Hi NickW0771, Thanks for watching. The round the black plastic has 2 white lines that should be aligned with the carburetor pin when in Idle. When I’m at full throttle my carburetor pin is at ¾ of the round the black plastic so aligned accelerator stem (look at video at 38sec, the stem I’m pointing at). Let me know if this helps 😊

It seems like the point where your idle speed control cable is preloadong where the swing arm bottoms out. Would you recommend this or just adjusting idle screw to preload

Hi Paul, thanks for watching. That screw is to lock your pull rope in case your engine is not in neutral position. If that screw is not set right and your able to pull your rope when the engine is not in neutral, could be very dangerous your engine might start and start propelling right away.

My boat ( 14tt aluminum) is my first ever, and who ever I got it from made it a key start engine with steering wheel up front. So I'm assuming that the screw that jumping the plastic piece is not needed? And I can screw it in and away from the plastic piece??? Thanks for replying

Hi Paul. Yes it’s a safety feature. In case your batteries are dead and you need to start your engine with the pull rope. It’s better that the screw is adjusted. It’s for your protection. It’s easy to setup. With your engine off put your shifter in gear and see if you can pull your pull rope (not hard to start engine, just to see if you can pull or it’s locked). And adjust until you can’t pull it. Should be locked 👍

Look, something similar is happening to me, but in reality I'm not 100% sure that when I connect the gasoline hose, the same engine you have turns off, it doesn't stay moderating, it will be the same problem that you had your other thing thanks

Hi Luis Manrique. Thank you for watching, When you have an idling issues it's usually 1- Dirty carburator OR 2- Idle screw adjustment OR 3- Air screw adjustment OR Bigger issue, bad reed valves. Hope this helps

Joe you ARE correct, the front screw is the “Air screw” it changes the amount of air given to the engine at idle. The screw you’re adjusting is the Idle screw.

Hi patrickedwards, Thanks for watching. I will send you to another video I made so it will show you what I'm talking about when I say "metal rod". You will see the metal rod at 33sec of this video, the metal rod that is connected to your plastic upside down plastic L. The plastic upside down L you see at the right of the screen in the video it is connected to you knob. If you turn your nob right for increase idle you will see the upside down plastic L pull the metal rod connected to it. That metal rod goes to your idle (golden colour) Rod. You can see this idle rod on the same video at 1.58min top left corner. So make sure by turning you idle knob your plastic upside down L should be pushing metal rob when turning left and pulling metal rod when turning knob right. Hi Micke, thanks for watching. I mesured the top link and I get 1 3/4 inch’s of metal link. Excluding plastics. So from plastic to plastic it’s 1 3/4 inch’s for me. Hope this helps 👍 let me know if you need more info

So, if my engine runs fine, but when I get to idle, it begins to shake and ultimately cuts off. I believe I need to adjust this same screw. If I feel like it’s not getting enough gas, should I turn the screw to the left or the right?
