It's great seeing someone who points their camera at reference points such as the shore or other stationary objects so we can get an accurate idea of how fast the motor is pushing the boat. So many you tube video photographers seem to point their cameras directly down at the motor while at full throttle which gives very little, if any, usable speed information. Thanks for the well filmed video.

I have about 15ft plywood flat skiff and old 8hp 2 stroke outboard which does same performance as yours with 2 person and gear. Although im not sure if our boats compare because mine is Propably heavier. Still im impressed so much of tohatsu that Im thinking getting one. Do you think 600$ is too much for new? Did you tune your carb? I want cheap, economical and new motor so i dont need to row in the middle of the lake.
@r2bboats3 жыл бұрын
Yah I’m sure your setup is heavier and with an extra person, you getting similar performance to my boat with a 3.5hp makes sense. If I put your motor on my boat with just me it’d do 10-15mph. Yah Tohatsu makes a great outboard and they make the Mercury’s. At least the Mercury’s under 25hp. I think $600 for a new Tohatsu 3.5hp is a very good deal. A new Mercury 3.5hp is around $1000 at Cabelas/Bass Pro. I haven’t messed with my carburetor at all. I understand wanting the reliability. And a new four stroke Tohatsu would definitely be a reliable motor.

How did you keep the front of the boat down my 10ft jon boat lifts the nose like crazy with out anybody in it with me
@r2bboats Жыл бұрын
Hey sorry for the late reply. But the longer the boat the easier it is to keep the bow down because of the leverage. A 10ft is real hard to keep down. But on this run I had another motor I brought with me to test and it was weighing down the front. Thanks for watching!

Hey, I wasn’t able to start it in forward gear. It would only start while in neutral I think as a safety feature.
@bushpig81093 жыл бұрын
@@r2bboats Are you sure about that?
@r2bboats3 жыл бұрын
@@bushpig8109 I accidentally tried starting it while still in gear and it didn’t start. I switched it to neutral and it started. The Mercury manual states to place the shifter in neutral before starting. Is it possible for it to be started while in gear? Maybe, but I haven’t tried with the goal of getting it started while in gear. It’s been my understanding that the newer motors don’t start in gear as a safety feature.

Why should it make it any slower? Its just putting more gas in the engine right?
@r2bboats3 жыл бұрын
@@OffTheHookFishing although I didn’t change the carb myself that’s the general idea and I agree. A lot of these small motors are identical with the only difference being a the carb and some shims which create more horsepower. I too don’t understand how it would make a motor slower.
@fredknoch6 ай бұрын
The bigger the carb the more fuel it puts into the combustion chamber. At some point it’s too much fuel which leads to poor combustion and reduced hp. Imagine putting a big block Holley carb on the 3.5 outboard - it wouldn’t be able to run.
@bossfishsd3769 Жыл бұрын
From experience….. the 3.5 is 1 cylinder and the 4 is 2 cylinders……. the 5 hp upgrade really only works on the 4hp motor… Dimensionally the 5hp carb is the same ( however i did not check jet
