This episode is the one that cements what the FNDM calls the Mercury Effect. Fight scenes involving Mercury tend to be the biggest, flashiest, and best fights in the series. Mercury's tornado move is made possible because of inertia, centrifugal force, and the use of Wind Dust. Mercury is one of few characters in the series to default to wind. There's one particular line in Ruby and Yang's conversation with qrow that will serve as some heavy foreshadowing. You'll see, soon enough. Winter's dig at Weiss over becoming a receptionist is a subtle reference to Weiss's VA Kara, who started her career as a receptionist and assistant at the RT office. This was something of a slower episode, but with a lot of important beats regarding future characterization and developments. Next episode is gonna be hype

Re-watch the white Trailer if you don't remember it. Also, re-watch this episode and pay attention to the explanation that Winter was giving Weiss before the smack. Then add 2+2.

Funfact: Yatsuhashi Daichi (Brody with the orange big sword) semblance is to memory wipe and as a kid he had memory wiped his mother from his sisters memory, the sister gained her memory back and he told the truth and his grandpa suggested he should go to Beacon to master his semblance for good use instead.

I mean, it's possible she might have chosen a match against Foxx and Velvet too... Even if Velvet and Foxx were better options to fight Emerald and Mercury, I'd argue that Emerald and Mercury still likely beat them fairly easily... Mercury's a beast and even ignoring Emerald's skill in a fight, her semblance could really mess them up too, without them even knowing... Fox and Velvet might be more adaptable, but I don't know if they're as tough... Given how limited Velvet's "ammo" could be, it's hard to be sure how much of an advantage her weapon might be... It's possible Foxx might be able to use other senses to keep track of things a bit better, but he could still be tricked... I dunno

I think it'd still work on him, since it doesn't seem to specifically target sight... That said, if I remember correctly, Foxx has something like a proximity alert thing on his scroll... If Emerald doesn't take that into account, I think that could mess with her plans... I forget how well his semblance is known at this point too... That could put him and a teammate or more on alert if Emerald didn't account for it too... That communication could make a difference... I think Emerald could potentially bypass these issues, but they might complicate things and make it harder for her.

One thing I can say without spoiling anything for you is that Mercury may be the enemy but you absolutely have to respect his skill and dedication. There is a reason for it you find out later but he is low key one of the strongest fighters out there. Just remember everything ain’t always black and white even for those rocking monochrome colors….

Winter, who likely attended Atlas Academy, would've been trained for the Atlas military while attending, not to mention the training that went into her personal combat style.

Something important that many people don't get... and Winter touched a bit upon it in her teaching... Weiss and Winter can summon ANYTHING they defeat which caused them to stretch beyond their 'comfort zones'. Ie... killing simple Beowolves is child's play but what Winter summoned was an Alpha Beowulf, and is much, much harder to kill. This will become important later in this Volume for Weiss.

Basically, Fox from team CFVY actually would have been better against Emerald in my opinion. But yea team CFVY is actually a very skilled upperclassmen team. So it does speak volume about Mercury and Emeralds skills

@9:15 I'm going to tell you this, you have the wrong match up. Fox the blind one would actually be a better match up against Emerald who has the power of Illusion. Emerald can create visual and auditory illusions but fox has far more trained senses and would be able to "see" though Emerald's illusions because he would notice flaws in the sound, scent, and other sense inputs that Emerald would not be able to match as you can't duplicate something you can't experience. Emerald is a thief and an illusionist based on the story of Aladdin. As for Mercury, he's a highly trained assassin. Honestly Yatsuhashi was probably the best match up for him from that team, if Fox had disabled Emerald and lent support then it would have been a victory for CYFV. Mercury's legs are cybernetic prosthetics. Those are his weapons, and his weak point because they aren't flesh and bone they can be targeted full force, if the judges know about them (which they don't). There is a lot of maneuvering done involving this plot point.
