Great reaction! These tales are sad for so many reasons once you start breaking it down. Jenny and James were twins who were separated at birth and put into the system after their mother Violet died in childbirth after being horribly beaten by their father Stevie. They were born into violence and raised on the streets, because if Screech is 14 that means Jenny is too. So she's a 14 year old girl, "walking the streets" she's walked a thousand times before, late at night in high heeled shoes, hoping to escape. So most people take that to mean that she's a teenage sex worker. Then she gets robbed and murdered by her own twin brother who is then killed right after that. They came into the world through violence on the same night, lying side by side, and they left the world through violence on the same night, lying one street apart. 😢

@BobWarren_Ай бұрын
Violet's Tale is probably my favourite Ren track currently, after listening to so many of them. Yes, it's sad but also beautiful - particularly the contrast between the gorgeous fingerpicking guitar and that amazing vocal chromatic scale near the start, to using words like "bastard" and "prick" to describe Violet's dad and Stevie. The use of the corridor and staircase to change the reverb. And then it gets REALLY dark, physical abuse described and acted in vivid detail, ending with Violet's death and the birth of the twins on the operating table. It's a (triple) tragedy worthy of Shakespeare, and despite the overbearing sadness of it, it is truly beautiful. Comedies play their part, but tragedies will always make you feel the story more deeply, and unfortunately this story is/these stories are all too common in real, everyday life. Great reaction, subbed & liked because you felt it.

Super reaction, Aron. The "sirens", listen again carefully, they are seagulls! This was filmed in Brighton as a pretence of "London city, far from pretty", right by the sea on the south coast of England. The story telling is off the charts and all done live. For Violet's Tale, one of the takes, Ren said in an interview, just as he delivered the reveal at the end, the heaven's opened and it poured with rain. He added, he'd have loved that take to be the final one but overall, it wasn't as good as the one we see here.

Your reaction was almost exactly like mine. I sat in stunned silence for what felt like an hour and then just repeated no no no. Trying to talk myself out of what I had just heard. As a SA/DV survivor, Violets Tale was particularly brutal to hear. But my god… it’s SO IMPORTANT for people to be confronted with this topic. Made to feel it deeply. That is the magic of Ren. He takes excruciating topics, and either makes it okay to talk about (Hi Ren) or forces us to hear something like The Tales, feel it, think about it and god willing prevent it. I’ve **heard** that the politician or policeman who talked about the real story had said “what a shame” on Tv after it happened. I’ve also heard that “what a shame” is kinda the UK equivalent to USA politicians with their worthless “thoughts and prayers” after a mass shooting while they continue to line their pockets with NRA money. A basic, useless, generic statement given when they know damn well that nothing will be done to stop it from happening again. I’m not sure of the accuracy of the quote but I DEFINITELY hear a dose of sarcasm in the “such a shame” after Jenny’s Tale, in particular. Another heartfelt reaction, Aaron. It’s a rough one for sure. Back on 74/message in a bottle will cheer you up. It’s quite lighthearted. I think you’ll dig it. ☮️♥️

Keep in mind that in the UK, most police officers aren't armed. The armed units, like Richard belongs to, are on call for when they're needed. So as he's standing there looking at that knife wielding young guy, he KNOWS that one street away there's a girl that's been stabbed to death. Danger indeed.
@elevown2 ай бұрын
Yup an officer would not be walking around with a gun unless something serious like a murder had gone down in the area - (except the odd big event with VIPS) so he was most likely called out due to Jenny.
@Codex77772 ай бұрын
They also don't patrol the streets. They only get called out to serious armed incidents, or life-threatening incidents beyond the control of normal police. In real-life this would never occur. It's artistic licence by Ren. It works great artistically. It raises the drama and tension perfectly, in a way that a simple arrest, tazering or pepper spraying just wouldn't have done. :)
@BaronSpamedi2 ай бұрын
@Codex7777 there is nothing in the song to say that Richard isn't just part of an armed response unit responding to the stabbing, which is perfectly feasible. It doesn't say he was on patrol, like a beat bobby, but he could quite easily have been out driving in an armed response vehicle.

shit, there are still new contenders out there looking to get the spot as #1 Ren reactor... Great reaction! 🤩
@hummingbirdstones2 ай бұрын
First I have to compliment you on an outstanding reaction! You caught a lot of subtleties that most reactors don't. In fact, in Jenny's Tale at the end when he says "and the statue she was turned to butter in a breath" many ask if she died, and then he says "she's found somewhere to sleep" and "I guess that she escaped" and they assume she didn't die. You, however, were paying attention and got the inference from the similes. With regard to subtitles, you do whatever makes it easier for you. You will find that there are many songs (especially the rap ones) where they just can't keep up with him and are useless. Totally up to you what you want to do. It's your channel and if there are a few people who don't like it, oh well. Same for pausing. Renegades are quite use to lots of pausing and rewinding and have no problem with it. I personally want to hear what you have to say as you do an excellent job of it. We're accustomed to long videos, too, because Ren gets quite deep sometimes and it takes some noodling to break stuff down. I'm really looking forward to more of your Ren reactions. I'd take some suggestions before my comment and do something a bit lighter next. After that, though, I'd suggest you do Sick Boi because it may be taken down soon (there's a whole kerfuffle around that song) and a different version will get uploaded. I'd really hate it if you didn't get the chance to see the original version.

You’ve got it, Ren is deliberate in everything he does. His videos are laden with intent. He is a very good guitarist, but not above using simple, discordant strums to make his point. He uses this technique when he’s enacting Screech. He is a good actor, and you must realize he is performing this work live. You have had a good response from the renegades because you are truly providing analysis, and the best reactors have some analysis to contribute, rather than just saying ‘I like this.’ Ren is an amazing artist, unlike any other.
@Stefanka112 ай бұрын
Also, something else I’ve come to learn after watching his videos, it’s almost like musical theatre. re: the subtitle thing, i feel like its mostly specific to hi ren and the tales that people really don't like them, and it's for specific reasons, the subtitles in hi ren are just plain bad in certain points and have totally mislead some reactors, and with the tales, i think it's that subtitles have spoiled the end reveal for a few reactors. some renegades are a bit overzealous, sorry about that. a lot of people will probably think you should do chalk outlines (live) next, and that's a good choice, but its another sad song, and i like to advocate for something happy or joyous to lift spirits after the trauma dumps you've done. i think love music parts 1-4 (seperately, or all together, or 1+2 then later 3&4, it's not nearly as important to them at once, but doing them in order at least fairly close to each other temporally allows you to see ren's growth as an artist. or you could do something weird and funny like his fun cheeky bop Uninvited, or you could check out some big push (the red suspenders show is amazing, it's got great bob marley and sabbath covers as well as an amazing RENdition of Watch Out, a great Big Push Original)

Hey Aaron. Congrats you're definitely bringing some interesting opinion to Ren's work. It isn't important but the sound you think is sirens is actually seagulls. The vid is filmed in my home town which is a busy seaside tourist destination and there are a lot of herring gulls which are really noisy and aggressive here. They've brought the sound up to fill the silence but that is a noise you hear all the time in Brighton, even at night. Keep on going mate, you're on a great journey with Ren, I envey you hearing his work for the first time.

I want to double-down on the fact that you don’t need to address the haters. Just listen, learn, and move on. People who are actually interested in your take, don’t care about all that stuff. Thank you for an excellent reaction to now one of my favorites by Ren ❤

I have my captions on watching your reaction! For whatever reason, captions help settle my brain and I use them for movies, tv shows, videos etc.😆 The best reactors are the ones who are themselves, so no worries about pausing, long videos, captions etc. For everyone who doesn’t dig your style, there are others who will. This was a great reaction, thank you! ❤

At 43:13 when you hear the sirens, listen again as I did the same thing. Having grown up in coastal communities, I *think* that they are Seagulls. The ambience of the shoot location most likely had them. He did a bunch of his work in Brighton, where he lives. That is a coastal community directly south of London.

First of all: great reaction, you can definitely count yourself a Renegade 😊. Now, since you asked and brought it up multiple times, yes the subtitles absolutely affected your "Hi Ren" experience, just as it does with everyone else that has them on. I've seen literally hundreds and hundreds of Hi Ren reactions, and the effect is always the same. Your reaction is particularly interesting because you start with them off, giving us a baseline "control", so we actually get to see the non-subtle difference in the reaction before and after. I know you feel that you don't pay attention to the subtitles, but its a subconscious action that specifically in the case of "Hi Ren" is an escape mechanism. Psychologically, Hi Ren is intentionally filled with tension and anxiety-inducing mechanisms (the guitar playing, intensity of the lyrics, flashing lights, etc), and what happens is the mind immediately starts to look for ways to take in more information to understand the scenario, and is drawn to the subtitles because they're constantly changing on the screen and contain some leading information. So now your brain is trying to resolve lyrics you've seen ahead of when they've happened in the song, so you don't process the current lyrics while the rest of the line is sung. Additionally, the non-vocal cues (facial expressions, veins popping out, body language, etc) are missed because (and this is true) our eyesight is only in focus at approximately the size of your thumbnail at arms length. So back to how it affected your specific reaction: there are 2 very obvious changes: 1) you can see as you scan the subtitles, and its not once or twice, its CONSTANT after they're turned on, with glances up to see the performance, and 2) just like others with subtitles on, your facial expression takes on a more slack appearance, and is slow to react to the narrative. Go back and watch, you'll see what I mean. Let me finish with this: the requests to do or don't use subtitles are only really requested for Hi Ren and The Tales, and those requests come from a place of not wanting to have your personal experience affected adversely by the things I mentioned above. Ren's performances do contain subtle cues that we as humans pick up on that aren't down there in the subtitles. Do whatever you feel, its your channel, just know if it's explicitly requested, it comes from a good place and experience. Respectfully.

Thank you. But I actually did go back and watch before commenting about it on the 2nd one and it didn't affect me. The back and forth you are seeing is me writing notes and watching and switching to the bigger monitor. As time evolves there is more to take in, more to understand, more to write, more to react to. I do appreciate your feedback though

I dont think anyone can grasp the full scale of every little nuance and things happening the first watch. It will take several watches and each time it is like an onions layers being peeled back and showing another layer of something missed. I can't use lyrics because I am prone to reading rather than watching (something in my brain pulls me to the words), but even without the lyrics I am still realizing new things. Ren is just that good. Everything he does is most definitely intentional, and there are so many references, nuances, and layers to each thing that happens, that the normal human brain cannot grasp it all at once. Ren is a once in a lifetime individual and I really enjoyed this reaction and am now subscribed to your channel. Thank you!! And btw, if it will make a better experience for you to use the subtitles then go for it! Our brains work in different ways, and yours may work better with the lyrics. ❤

It’s so sad but he is the best storyteller/lyricist! All of his music is special like that. He has an ability to grab you in a way you don’t see coming. He’s a modern-day Shakespeare. There is no one out now like him. I’m honored to be living during his journey. 😊

Ren is a modern day bard painting such vivid imagery with his storytelling that it pulls you in and forces you to keep watching - even when it gets physically uncomfortable during Violet’s Tale. And Ren uses this ability to shed light on far too real issues in the world. Ren is special. Also like you yourself did when editing, I did laugh a little at the “what more can there be?!” after Jenny’s Tale 😅 With Ren there is always more surprises and he will keep blowing your mind. It’s about the only thing you can know for sure with any Ren song you check out 😂
