I bought a used 1967 Marquis with the 428 Super Marauder engine in 1974 and really loved that car. A close friend actually asked me to drive him and his new bride in it, functioning as the "Bridal Limousine," due to its smooth ride and great air conditioning. I wish that I still had that car.

Hey Adam, I just watched your porch post of the Mercury Marquis, Brougham, and Grand Marquis. I remember the first time I saw a brand new 1970, Mercury Grand Marquis. It was white with black cloth and vinyl. The styling interior. The styling was all new with its raparound taillights set inside the rear bumper and it's beautiful grill and hidden headlights. I was just 15 years old, but I thought they were the best-looking cars at the time. From that point on the Mercury Marquis stayed on my radar screen. They really had a thick luxurious interior that stood out from other brands. My family worked at the Chrysler Corporation in Highland Park for over 30 years, so naturally we drove Chrysler products. My dad had just bought a 69 Chrysler 300 4 door hardtop, with the 440 cid, engine, 4 barrel Carter carburetor. It was fast and powerful, he towed a 17 foot camping trailer with ease. It was off white with dark blue vinyl top over dark blue vinyl interior. It had three blue pinstripes that ran low on each side. The rear quarters had "Three Hundred spelled out in blue paint that matched the blue top and interior. It was the first year for Chrysler's fuelsage styling, that I thought was really good looking. That was before I saw the 70 Marquis. I had a 69 Mustang Mach I that I loved, and still think was the best looking Mustang ever. By that time I was a total Ford fan. In the 80s I owned 8 Fords and a 33 foot Southwind class A motorhome built on Ford's 450 Super Duty chassis. One of my 8 cars was a 75 Mercury Marquis 9 passenger Colony Park wagon, which soon became one of my favorite cars of all time. It was white with tan tuck and roll vinyl interior, and of course had the wood paneled sides. I had the 460 CID with the Motorcraft 4300 4 barrel carburetor, that I eventually had to replace with a brand new one that cost me over $700, including a 10% discount. But it was money well spent. Ford used engine vacuum to power the ATC system and headlight doors. Until I replaced the carburetor I was constantly chasing vacuum problems. The ATC would pump out hot air when climbing steep grades. The system would heat all the air before cooling it to remove humidity, vacuum provided the cooling by opening and closing little vacuum motors under the dash, there was always hissing and clicking heard under the dash as the system controlled the temperature and air ducting. It gave the car a cute personality headlight doors would not stay closed overnight. The doors were designed to remain open if the system lost vacuum to insure the headlights would would always work. After replacing the carb the engine ran perfectly all the time, the ATC performed as it should no matter the road conditions, and the headlight doors would remain closed for more than 3 weeks without driving the car. I replaced all the vacuum check valves under the hood, and I installed more vacuum storage canisters all over the car to insure it always had vacuum in higher elevations of the High Sierra Mountains. Ford recommended rejeting the carb for higher elevation conditions to help with vacuum loss. I didn't want to sacrifice any engine performance due to under carburetor jeting. I loved the power the 460 had no matter where I drove it. I drove all my friends crazy troubleshooting the vacuum issues. It was all I ever talked about until I replaced the carburetor, making it worth spending more than $700. My Marquis Colony Park was the go to car when hauling the family or large loads. And I agree with you, it had the most comfortable ride of any of my cars. It even topped my 1990 Mark Vll LSC with its front and rear air suspension. Thanks for your review of the Marquis' You have a beautiful collection of them.

Nice. My first car was a 68 Merc Montclair. 2 door coupe with a vinyl top of course. My Dad had a 66 Parklane, but he admired the new Marquis. Since he bought new every 3 years, I was sure he’d get a 69 Marquis. Much to my delight, he instead bought a bright red 69 Marauder X-100, which had a Marquis-like front end and a funky fastback roofline but a sort of recessed rear window. It would smoke the tires forever. Lol. I did not realize how small the production runs were in 67 & 68. Thanks for posting this video.

Thanks for the videos, Adam. My dad had a '75 Grand Marquis, triple green. One day after dropping me off at school and then while driving my sister to high school they were in a wreck at a traffic light. No one was hurt, but that was the last time I ever saw the car. A couple of days later he bought a '76 Chrysler Newport.

Disclaimer … I’m a Merc guy. Unfortunately FoMoCo never could get the marketing right for Mercury. I chuckle every time I see the ads with “The man’s car” tagline because virtually everyone I knew who owned a Mercury was a woman. Nothing can touch the Cougar (every generation until 1980) IMHO for sheer beauty (well except for Thunderbird). Comet was always my favorite compact of the 60s and Montego had curves in all the right places (much prettier than it’s sister the Torino). For full size cars, the 67-68 Mercurys are (again IMHO) the prettiest cars ever made. But then again, from the very start, big Mercs were always good looking. Anyway … love your channel … love your videos … love this car!

My parents had several Marquis over the years and the ride was incredible. This is sort of a silly thing to remember but one thing I always loved and I don't know if the dealership that my dad got the cars from just normally ordered the Marquis with this option because my dad did not special order the cars but they always had the side cornering lamps. The light stayed on for two or three seconds after the turn signal clicked off and growing up in the country with no street lights you would not believe how useful that option was.

Back in '79 I had bought a brand new VW Rabbit and being proud of it I drove the hour out in the country to a friend's house. His dad who had a 76 Mercury Marquis, asked how much I paid for my V dub. I told him and he said if I was paying that money much for a car, I'd want to get a real car! I said this is a real car. He said No it's not, it's a tomato can. So I asked him "what's your idea of a real car? His reply "The biggest Ford money can buy".

Also, I am doing a frame off restoration on another 67 Marquis of mine. The plan is to make it a replica of the car used in the pilot episode Hawaii Five-o. And just for parts I have a third 67 Marquis for parts. I'll say it again, the 1969 Marquis Brougham was a Traffic Stopper! Drivers jockeyed for position at intersections to get a better look at a car, the likes of which no one expected! Mercury was very proud of their "two-tiered" Marquis/Monterey face for their big cars. Oldsmobile was deeply shaken by the exaggerated hood length and front overhang of the Marquis - it made the Ninety Eight look like a Delta 88. The limousine-like roofline and wall-to-wall taillamps made the 1969 Marquis a real head turner. Even 1969 Lincoln owners looked twice!

My favorite Mercury, 67-74. That 1967 coupe interior was a whole new level of luxury. And - in Brougham trim - they pretty much maintained this throughout the period. I was curious to see if you would mention the original Grand Marquis trim option (pre-series designation) in 1974, most don't know. I should have more faith - Adam the expert :) I beg to differ though on the Grand Marquis status 1975 and beyond - it was a distinct model - Marquis, Brougham and then Grand Marquis; all with separate pricing and not as options. Our family never had one back in the day - we were Galaxie level folks - but I knew people who did and was blown away. This at a time when power windows were a rare feature for middle class families that hadn't yet moved into one of those newer homes with a master bathroom!

Canada had the Meteor lineup and in 1967 the top model was called the Montego. For 1968 that name was adopted for Mercury's intermediate series and so for 1968 the top line 2-door Meteor coupe was called the LeMoyne which looked identical to the Marquis as they both used the 1967 LTD roofline. Meteors used Ford interiors and drivetrains in a similar manner as Canadian Pontiac's were based on Chevrolet chassis and drivetrains.

This guy has done his homework. When I brought my 1998 MGM GS in 2008 (10 yrs old w/87k on odometer) the original window sticker was still in glove box. I was tickled to see that FoMoCo still listed the split bench front seats as 'twin comfort lounge seating', standard equipment btw. And they were right to do so. The short pile velour seats are just like sitting in my granddad's old barcolounger. But I was certainly taken aback when I read the MSRP on the car. It was almost $28,000. This was a GS edition, the base model. After dealer delivery from St. Thomas, Ontario, CA it topped out at a little under $30,000. The car was 10 yrs old....and I still got sticker shock. 😯 But I am still driving it at present each day to work at 214,000 miles and it runs so smoothly and handles like a dream. Who cares if it doesn't get 35 mpg. Lol...at least when I get to wherever I'm going to....I'm well rested and ready to enjoy myself. What it loses in gas mileage it more than makes up for in quiet comfort, ride, and safety. And what better way to arrive in style and svelte luxury than with a Mercury Grand Marquis. I loved it so much I brought an '06 last year and drive it when going out of town. I'm sure government standards are partially to blame for its untimely demise. But Ford sure screwed the pooch on shutting this Panther platform down instead of retooling and updating a timeless classic. Ty for your indepth research and fine reporting on the golden era of automobiles. Keep up the good work.👍

Most of the ones I came in contact with were from Wagner-Lockheed to include a '65 Galaxie 500 4dr. HT I once owned. Ford may have at some point sourced them from Kelsey Hayes or could possibly been aftermarket replacements. The do indeed work quite well for larger heavier vehicles.

One of the reasons for the Marquis price drop in '68 was that automatic transmission and power front disc brakes were now optional. The standard engine was also smaller. Similar de-contenting also occurred with the 1968 Ford LTD and XL. So, I think this was a move to make the base price look more modest without significantly lowering the actual cost of the car the way most people ordered it. Also, in mid-year '68, the top of the line brougham interior was offered in the Park Lane 2 door hardtop. This may have been one of the reasons for the drop in Marquis production for '68 because some buyers may have preferred the standard fastback of the Park Lane over the formal fastback of the Marquis. Except for the different roofline and the deletion of the Marquis crests on the seat backs, the 2 door Park Lane Brougham and Marquis were virtually the same car.

Great video as always very informative. While not the "early years", I have owned two. A 1980 Marquis and a 1992, first year of the "modular 4.6". Have to admit I loved both cars about equally. The 1980 was the 302 with variable venturi carb; often hated by mechanics. The first engine rebuild I did, and replaced the carb with a Holley 2300. BIG improvement. In OD at 60 MPH it would just loaf on the highway and was able to squeeze 26 mpg. The 92 was different in many ways, but still super smooth and comfy. I still dream of the 1980 from time to time even 26 years later. Keep up the great work on this channel. Hands down my favorite YT past time.

I remember the TV commercial for either the 1971 or 1972 Marquis Brougham, with a gemologist cutting a very expensive diamond successfully while riding in the back seat, to demonstrate how smooth the ride of the Marquis Brougham.

Between my late father and myself we've owned five Grand Marquis LS 's. Including his last car, a 2005 Grand Marquis LS Premium. Inherited it, I love it, still runs and drives great at 125,800 miles. These cars definitely are underrated.

Adam, loved the video! The original owner of the 1963 Olds Super 88 I learned to drive on replaced it with a 1968 Delta 88 Custom. But in 1971, she replaced the '68 Olds with a Marquis Brougham sedan. I thought it was the most beautiful "family car" I'd ever seen. And still do.

I have TWO Marquis! A 2003 Grand Marquis LSE and a 1969 Marquis Conv. What fantastic cars! My observation is that the Marquis/Grand Marquis appealed very strongly with the self-employed business man/owner or entrepreneur. Everyone I knew that had one back in the day was one or the other. I got one as a company car for my own business (the '03). They are perfect family cars, or cars for hauling around clients. It is not an ostentatious statement but rather a quiet statement of judicious good taste.

Thank you, Adam, for another excellent video. I love this era of American cars, and only wish that I lived nearby to see your personal collection first-hand. I was a teenager during the summer of 1971, and my block was filled with beautiful new cars -- '71 Continental coupe, '71 Sedan DeVille, '71 Ninety Eight coupe, and my parents' '71 Buick Centurion coupe. Then, our next door neighbors purchased a new '71 Mercury Marquis sedan, and I found it to be a supremely attractive automobile. As I watched that Marquis during the years that it was next door, I gained a great appreciation for these cars, and the style of that sedan from fifty-one years ago cemented the status of the '71 models as my favorite-ever model year for the Marquis.

Goodday Adam, Another great video with plenty of great information. Love the body shape. In your opinion how do you differentiate between a coupe & a hardtop. You called it a coupe in my opinion I would call it a hardtop because the rear windows go down & not pivot open. Your number 1 Fan in Australia Louis Kats from Melbourne Australia ☺ 👍 ❤

Well, some coupes are hardtops. Not all hardtops are coupes ;). Technically a 2d hardtop has no B pillar.

I was in high school in the last half of the 1970s. A friend of mine had a 1974 Mercury Marquis Brougham. We took it all over, including camping. He babied that car and I thought it was absolutely beautiful. I couldn't believe someone so young had such a nice car. Great video!

In my 2004 Grand Marquis I have a set of wells-Engberg push/twist hand controls installed. I am a paraplegic. These controls perform excellently there, and in our white Mercury my wife, little boys, and I thoroughly enjoyed our 6000 mile road trip out West last summer. It was a comfortable and smooth touring vehicle even at speeds near 90mph, with cruise control that ably maintained speeds as low as 25mph, which ended up being a surprisingly useful feature in long, scenic, national park parkways. This car is however not our daily driver, a voluminous ramp-entry 2009 Toyota Sienna minivan is, which also has hand controls, but isn't as pleasurable to cruise around in. I would love to acquire an 80s-era Mercury Colony Park station wagon someday, or a Checker taxi cab, or an MV-1. You know, that's the rather homely but purpose-built wheelchair accessible vehicle assembled at the Humvee plant in Mishawaka, Indiana for 6 years in the 2010s. It seems to me they were built to last. If only it were a worthy subject of your great Porch Chat series; very little high quality video content exists on this vehicle on KZbin. I do like them. Until 2014 it ran the versatile 4.6L Ford Modular SOHC 2-valve V8, also found the Grand Marquis up to its final year. Adam, I believe I saw one parked in the driveway of a residence in the background of one of your ride-along videos. Thanks for all the great videos, I've learned so much. My favorite ones so far: your Grand Marquises, Omega, and Syd Mead's Imperial.

This was a great overview of the Marquis/Grand Marquis nameplates, Adam. Having driven and/or owned a few of these cars over the years, including my '73, I agree with you -- they were/are something special and different. I've even owned an '86 Fox body Marquis wagon -- which was quite the handler for what it was, as well as being well made with a surprising cargo capacity for the size of the vehicle.

The 1967 Marquis was my first car in 1999. I bought it with a broken flex plate. Unfortunately it had sat for more than a decade and the frame was shot. It broke in a year and I eventually got rid of the car after another decade. Someday I’ll find another. Thanks for the video!

Haha Rudy colludey! What a stinker. Really love that slinky Sports Roof on the silver car @2:32, lifted from the '67 Galaxie. But I guess that's a lesser model? Also always loved the "rectumlinear" front on the '69/'70. Never hardly ever saw any of these grand old Mercs. Even sorta a guilty pleasure liked the '78-ish ones. Seemed like they were only blue, red and...silver? Great video as always!

Another excellent video Adam! I had an '88 Grand Marquis back in 2002. Supremely comfortable car, just like floating on air down the road, so smooth. The 302 motor was velvety smooth and powerful, 25 mpg cruising at 70, still ran great at 160K miles. It was rust that killed this car, otherwise a solid runner and a pleasure to drive😀

Mom had a '63 Marauder, then a '68 Park Lane Brougham. I drove both extensively back in the day, as the '63 became a second car I preferred the '63 over the '68; it was tight and trim, while the '68 was a floater. Both were excellent, well built, reliable for the time.

A good friend of mine had a 1966 Mercury Parklane coupe and it blew my mind in terms of comfort and surprising pace. Parts were a bit of an issue as we live in Australia where there were hardly any vehicles imported here and no real parts network or support for them. This was a time before the internet became what it is today.

I grew up in a fairly small city, but we had a large Ford/Lincoln-Mercury dealership. I saw plenty of Fords & several Lincolns but I hardly ever saw a Mercury until 1969. Then there were new Marquises everywhere! Two neighbors on our street each bought one; even as a kid I thought they were very impressive cars.
