I have the same engine and this video definitely help me, I’m still trying to figure out why my engine won’t rev up and the 4 beep sound won’t go away 😢

@@OutboardDad thank you for your respond im in Nevada, it won’t go over 1500 rpm even if it’s in forward or reverse and the beep won’t stop..

What does a poppet valve do and how do you know when it isn’t working properly?

The poppet valve is when you are running higher RPM so the engine has full water flow for cooling. It overrides the thermostats just a simple spring pressure. The water pump at higher rpm builds pressure pushing against the spring opening the valve. Has to be pulled apart to be sure it’s not corroded or stuck

This is an EXCELLENT video on the poppet valve! Unfortunately for me I wish I had seen it before I tried to replace mine. I accidently pushed the rubber Gromet through the back of the Poppet valve hole into the engine water jacket! Will I have to tare the Engine down to retrieve it or is there another way to get it out?? Plz help.

@@horacelee880 interesting, I use a few different hook tools some home made. I would first buy a cheap boro scope on Amazon for your phone and see exactly where it is. Then you can bend up a coat hanger even sharpen the end to poke through and pull. Even a large fish hook can be heated and bent into shape. Let me know if I can help. [e-mail]

LORD HAVE MERCY IT WORKED!!! I did as you suggested and got the scope from Amazon to locate it and used a coat hanger and fished it outta there!! Unbelievable!! Thanks to You OutboardDad for the idea! Now the poppet valve assembly is ready for replacement. Just one more thing :what type of sealer for the gaskets do you suggest?

@@horacelee880 awesome! I had faith in you! I use a 3m weather stripping adheasive. If you watch any of my water pump or poppet valve videos it should show it there.

Keith, thanks for these great videos. Two questions: 1) can you share where you got the service manual that you’re referencing, and 2) did I miss the video where you removed the lower unit and determined that the poppet valve and thermostats need to be replaced or are you replacing them as a precaution?

@@Zamazing717 hey brother, this is a motor I will sell when done so want to sell something with all work done for the new owner. The service manual I bought at West Marine and have a video a few weeks back about that with interesting comments as well you will want to watch. @@OutboardDad Thanks Keith, I’ll search for both video’s. My Optimax is doing well right now so I’m on the water. I took on servicing and repairing last season so just trying to learn as much as possible about the engine and service items. I only have 280 hours on the engine but it’s a 2000 model so I’m anticipating issues to surface pretty soon.

@@Zamazing717 ok, I have another video on the air pump coming soon. This is a service issue that gets missed and can be very costly. Cheap o-ring kit to keep water from getting into the engine and causing major problems. Thanks for connecting and let me know if I can help

optimax motor have a strainer that plug up and give you a over heat horn
