I will show you an easy trick to troubleshoot the 4 beeps oil warning on a Mercury 135 XL Optimax. This also works for all Mercury with oil tank mounted on the engine.

@@us4marine Hey thanks ! Well mine is a 150 Optimax V 6 so its not a small engine but has the dinky tank on it. I have learned so much in the last week on these systems. The boat I am working on is a Ranger 19 foot Spanky been setting since 2019 and the plug was left in it and the inside flooded.The original owner passed away and his son in law brought me the boat . I pump out nasty old fuel and took out the oil tank and dumped the oil it was puke red and stunk really bad . The park plugs where all factory 2005 still had the factory paint on them and the there was as very think sliver of an electrode on each plug they were bad. These engines are not for the faint of heart they are hard to work on. I had to tear apart most of the wiring harness just to get to the bolts on the lower cowling. I found out in the last week its common for these sensors to go bad . When I finally found out I took that tank back out and dumped the new oil out of it and took it to the bench and slammed it up side down on the bench the float for the sensor was to bad it didnt even move I took a long tool with a hook and reached down inside the tank and it would not budge. I called my supplier in Wash they had the tank and the filter for the oil its important to replace the filter I oked the extra parts with the customer and told him what was going on and he gave me the green light to order it. This is only my second Optimax so this is all new to me I never had a bad sensor on any other engine that I can think of. I had to change out the water pump too so yeah its kicked my ass . I dont know if you know this or not but these have a compressor on them that is famous for failing and quite expensive and I found out the air injectors from the compressor fail too it will cause a rough idle . One you tuber took his engine to like five Marine techs and they couldnt find the problem and finally took it to one and he knew what it was. I guess you can flush them and clean them like injectors. But he said they fail. I live in the U.S Nevada

@@us4marine I have a question though. I get wrong reading on seawater temp, no alarm but 100% sure that the reading is wrong. Any Idea what could cause that and where is the temp instrument that is reading located. I can’t’ find it described in the user manual. Mercury optimax 135 Seawater 2004.

I have a 2001 mercury optimax 135hp. I have a random continuous beep and it goes into limp mode when trying to gain speed / plane and wont let me throttle up. It does not happen everytime. Its random. But when i shut boat off and turn back on its fine. Motor is pissing fine and temps seem good. Oil was ran a little low last year but its topped off now and randomly does it. Do you think the magnet would be the issue with mine also?

What if I did the magnet test and determined the float was bad, I changed the tank filled 3/4 full with oil, ran the motor without the cap and the reserve wouldn't fill. The beeps have stopped but the tank won't fill.

If you put the magnet high on the sensor it shuts down the alarm and that i understand. That still leaves if the oil isn't coming into the maIn tank and that still leaves bad float, no pressure going to the in boat tanks, a clogged line or a bad seal on the in boat tanks.

Correct, if there’s no oil coming into the main oil tank, there is really no need for any of these test, the purpose of the video is to show how to test a float in the main oil tank when there is actually oil coming from the boat. If there’s If no oil is coming from the remote tank, a completely different troubleshooting and tests must be done. Thank you for watching and stopping by, it really helps. Take care

Yes, it can absolutely be the issue, the remote tank in the boat is not holding their pressure needed to push the heavy oil to the motor’s oil tank, because the air is leaking through the cap’s “O” ring. Thank you so much for watching 👍🏻

Cant you just loop the 2 wires till a person gets a new tank? Or does it work with specific ohms?

Every switch and or sensor works with specific ohms, in this case is not a sensor which would show as tank is going lower, this is a switch once it's trigger it closes.

Dear Sir, I have exactly the same warnings as described. The engine is an Mercury Optimax 150hp 2008 with the same looking oil main tank as in your video. However it seems like the oil level is below the length of the sensor. I.e. the oil main tank is about half full. The oil remote tank is about 3/4 full and I've tighten the filling lid. Any idea what to do next? Perhaps I should just try to fill up the oil main tank and see what will happen? Is it safe to run the engine at idle as long as there are oil in the oil main tank? (Sorry for all my questions -but I'm desperate to get this fixed for my kid's holiday) ;-)

Hi Ferdamannen, as long as there is oil in the main tank the motor is being lubricated. Is good to know as I explained in the video, the remote tank sends oil to the main tank with the use of two hoses, one carrying the oil from the remote tank to the main, and the second hose is air coming from the motor crankcase. As the pistons move up and down they create below the piston vacuum when going up and pressure when coming down, that pressure goes through the air hose and begins to fill the remote tank with air, the air has no where to go and the remote tank gets pressurized forcing oil to travel through the oil hose to the main tank. So if one of your remote tank cap’s. “O” rings is not perfectly seated or the cap is loose or screwed in wrong, air will scape and remote tank will not send oil to the main. Either that or check all hose connections in both hoses. This system needs perfect sealed connections to work properly. Hope this helps, and thank your participating. Take care.

Hello!! Great vid! But ONE PROBLEM I’m having is this: I did the magnet test on my engine oil tank, and that got the beep to stop- so it was clear that the sensor was bad. SO I replaced the tank today, primed it, purged the new tank, but the alarm STILL SOUNDS!!! What could possibly be the reason for this? We confirmed that oil is getting to the tank through purging it (oil leaked out the top when cap was off and engine running). And this is a BRAND NEW TANK, so the sensor should be good. Any idea why it could still be beeping??? Thank you!!

Hi Robert The issue most probably is the canister fuel filter in the motor (port side), It has 2 filaments inside and when those sense water it will trigger the alarm, when I replace those I usually replace the element and the sensor. @@us4marine The alarm sounds only when the ignition is on. There is no sound other than that. 480 hours, 2012 model optimax pro xs. When the engine master came for maintenance 2 months ago, she said that the sensor was faulty. but there is no mechanic in the city where I live. It comes from afar and cannot come continuously.

I have 2005 mercury, 90 horse optimax 2 stroke that will run when I give the gas to it and get it up on plane it’s just like you turn the key off it does and then I can turn around and crank it right back up give it the gas runs a little bit then it dies. I cannot figure it out. I have changed a lot of things on it.

Hi 30gills, it could be several reasons creating the same problem, the only way your main tank (tank in the motor) is getting filled, is because there is enough air pressurized in your remote tank (tank in the boat). Make sure your remote tank caps “O” rings are not leaking with soapy water, more over if you have a filler hose attach to one of those cap holes, same with the complete length of the hose that brings the air to the tank, (there’s one with a blue line) but don’t remember which one is the one that carries the air from your engine block to the remote tank. YOU NEED that tank pressurized with enough pressure to push heavy oil through more than 5 to 7 feet hose. Because there is not enough pressure, you need to remove that cap on the main tank to make it easier for the oil to clime all the way to the main tank. You have an air leak. Yeah, what actually happens is the ferrite ring magnet is glued to the bottom of the float inside the tank. The magnet falls off (due to failure of the adhesive over time) and the reed switch in the sensor probe opens the circuit causing the alarm. The quickest way to disable the alarm is to short the two sensor wires together, which is what the reed switch does to indicate the oil is full. I have a shorting plug made up to do that job as a spare part and diagnostic tool. Nothing worse than that alarm going off in your ear while you're wondering what the hell is going on. The same alarm beep pattern is for water in the filter/separator. Pulling the wire off the filter will stop that one. A continuous beep is engine overheating - that's a killer - one of the thermostats or the impeller - or gunked-up water jackets. I've had all of the above!
