Mercury Outboard Maintenance - DIY - How to Change the Spark Plugs, Lower Unit Oil, and Fuel Filter

Outboard motors or any gas motor in general are an enigma to most. People fear what they don't understand so they leave even the most basic of maintenance tasks to repair facilities. In this video, we show you how to do some simple maintenance tasks on your outboard motor. The unit serviced in this video is a 50HP Mercury but I think you will find that similar principles for replacing these items will apply to your specific make and model. Doing your own maintenance is very rewarding, it saves and ton of money, and it is relatively easy. We hope this video helps educate you on basic maintenance practices for outboards and we wish you luck on your next service project!

Very informative and useful. However, one small point. Please use the correct size spanner (or as you call it, wrench) to tighten the nut for filling the oil rather than just pliers.

I use a wire brush to clean mine. In the golf section of your local Walmart they have little wire brushes for cleaning golf cleats. They work perfect for cleaning spark plugs! Good luck and thanks for watching! 👍

I just purchased the same motor (1990,60hp) but a tiller handle. The turning radius is very wide. Do you know if there is a way to increase the turning angle?

I do not but if you figure it out, I'd be careful adjusting it too far. At higher speeds a sharper turn can be a bit dangerous.

No don’t do that you won’t fully lubricate the lower unit it requires pressure to get into all the little small places inside the lower unit.

Might be a dumb question but is there motor oil ? Or just the gear oil ?

There are no dumb questions! There is only gear oil on this particular motor. The engine oil is mixed in with the gas on two-cycle engines.

I have a question for you sir hope u can h elp me I have a 125 mercury outboard yr 2000. When the water I took water over the transom then the trim just went up all the and stayed.on had to take of battery to stop

Unfortunately I don't know much about the trim but it sounds like the switch shorted out.

When I tried this oil change, something weird happened. Eventually the oil just stopped flowing into the lower unit and started seeping out the edges of the pump where it screws in to the bottle. I could not get any more oil into the motor and it would not seep out of the top section like it's supposed to. I had plenty of oil left in the 32 oz container but it just kept seeping out of the pump itself. I'm kind of getting the feeling that my pump sort of exploded even though it was brand new. Should I just get a new pump and try again? Thank you.

Not this model. This model is a two stroke and the oil is mixed in with the fuel.
