Great video, especially the trick about the 4th plug that was hard to get to. We had already spent an hour trying to replace it. That was the only spark plug we had to replace after it had worked it's way loose. Now the engine starts nicely, and runsn well overall, but the idle is much higher, leading to very rough forward or backward changes. Can you think of something we might have hit that screwed up our idle? Thanks.

Thanks! Since I’m not a professional mechanic, I would be guessing. My first thought is if you didn’t touch anything else maybe the gapping on the spark plugs is incorrect? If it’s not that then, maybe something has worked its way loose elsewhere.

@@DIYBuildouts Kind of you to reply so quickly. We did gap it correctly thanks to your video, but we dislodge a tube on nearby that regulates the idle speed. Found that answer on another video. All good now. Thanks again.

Good video. I'm putting an hour meter on my 50hp. Wonering if I have to take the coil pack off to get closer to the actual plug or if it's close enough to wrap it by the coil pack. Thought you may know. Thanks

Thanks. Unfortunately, I never installed an hour meter on my unit so I’m not sure how to help you.

i changed my spark plugs on my 40hp fourstroke. when i started it the idle was very uneven and running rough when giving gas. engine stopped with non-critical engine failiure. Any clues for a rookie boat mechanic? thanks from Sweden for a good educational video

Hello! There could be many things that are causing your problem. The way I would diagnose it, and I am not an official mechanic I should point out, is by looking at what you recently changed. If it was working fine before the spark plugs but now after changing the spark plugs it’s running rough…It is likely the new spark plugs. It may be the wrong brand or the gapping on the spark plugs may be incorrect. After that, you are going to have to go down the list of diagnosis from fuel line and all sorts of other things that are more complex then this comment can handle

Great video and thanks for sharing. I have exactly same merc as you and about to DIY my spark plugs. I am wonder what is the size of your socket head for the spark plug you use? Also, what brand and part number for the spark plug you would recommend.
@DIYBuildouts Жыл бұрын
Thanks! The socket is called a spark plug socket, it’s a special socket you’ll need to buy as it’s not a normal size or shape found in sets to my knowledge. I got mine from a local auto store for a few bucks. As for the parts I ordered this kit to completely service my outboard: www.partsvu.com/mercury-405060-complete-300-hour-service-maintenance-kit-10w-30-standard-gearcases-only-8m0113483.html

Spark plugs working out for you? I ordered the same ones you did and they were a little different from the original ones I pulled out.I gapped them correctly but they are at an angle whereas the ones I pulled off original were like perfectly Bent 90 degrees. Any misfiring? Thanks again!!

Hi Steve, my engine has been operating flawlessly. I’m sorry to hear you had some kind of issue. To answer your question, no issues at all!

Can I start from the bottom up ??
@DIYBuildouts4 ай бұрын
Sure. Doesn’t make a difference so long as the wires go back to the proper location as far as I know.

Why did you not use a torque wrench. Those plugs should be set at 19-21 ft pounds
@DIYBuildouts Жыл бұрын
I just followed the instruction manual, and it made no mention of using a torque wrench. Good to know though!

Ok, I just changed the plugs on my Tracker 60 hp Merc. I found that info on a repair site. That wasn’t meant to be a gotcha comment. Just curious. You have a quality site for sure.
