Great video! Clear concise information; thank you once again.. I had a 65 hp Mercury o/b in the 1960's, an 85 (80?) hp Merc the 1970's and a Merc 470 I/O (4 cylinder, 170 hp, Chevy block) in the early 1980's... It looks like they have made some improvements since then! (except for the alternator belt replacement ☺).... Thank you so much for your videos; you are helping more people than you can know. I pass your link to everyone I know; I hope you become the #1 Boat-guy on KZbin.....

@@melrose9252 Hi Mel, I'm sure you could be (are?) correct. Back in the 1970's-1980's we were told that the Merc 470 I/O was a Chevy blocked engine, in fact used some Chevy parts on them at times.... I'd like to learn more about it as that 470 (4 cylinder, 170 hp) was a great engine. It was fresh-water cooled with a heat-exchanger, was quiet, and was super fuel efficient. It ran the 22' boat at cruise-speed in the low 40 mph range.
@melrose9252
@melrose9252 Жыл бұрын
@@andrewfyakim525 < The cylinder head was off the 460 Ford and the block was a purpose built marine engine designed and built by Mercruiser. Mercury was concerned back in the day that engines for In/Outs and Inboards may not be available from GM or the other manufacturers. These were years coming off gas shortages and heavy emissions. Mercury built their own. They came with a 2 or 4 bbl and fresh water cooling. They were known to overheat fairly easy and with automotive blocks becoming more powerful and more available, these engines were dropped.
@andrewfyakim525
@andrewfyakim525 Жыл бұрын
@@melrose9252 Thank you for the info; I'm sorry to hear it was not a considered a good engine!... I was in my 20's when we had that boat/ engine, and we had it for just shy of 6 years; fortunately we had no problems with it. We even ran offshore out of the Beaufort Inlet in NC a half-dozen times a year. The engine never failed to start right up, and needed only basic maintenance. It never overheated, but then, and as I do now, I'm easy on my engines and don't run them hard... Thank you once again for the info!

Yes, that was! Great eye! Yes, it is not uncommon to see a little water there, only a teaspoon or so though. If you find a few ounces, there is something going on! LOOKING AT A new 200 OR BETTER SEAPRO MERC, do these motors have any issues in dirty water? example, the suzuki 250's fuel cooler will clog after several years, if run on the motors flush ports. You have to run in a tub to keep it from clogging when you're in the dirty St. Johns river. I know, sounds crazy, but believe me. Don't know much about Mercs, versus HONDA AND Suzuki's
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
Haven't really seen a lot of them just yet. They are still fairly new. The V-8 and V-6 are super similar and we've got a guy with the V-8s on his boat. He's over 1500 hrs so far in a year without any issues. Yeah, Suzuki's have been known for their internal clogging issues though. That's why the Merc's and Yami's cost so much more. The metals are different and they've painting the inside of the engines, all of the cooling passages! Which is why you don't see them packed full of internal anodes to mess with. Yamaha learned that lessen with the F225s and midsections! For where you are, I'd stay away from the Honda's for the same issue. That Suzuki seemed to do you really well, but if you are ready to spend the money and do the repower. The Merc V-6 would be a good engine for you.
@CaptDavesSportfishing
@CaptDavesSportfishing 5 жыл бұрын
@@BornAgainBoating It was the fuel cooler mostly, clogged 100% in this dirt water here after 5 years. Never ever again will use those flush ports! A 70 gallon tub, and run up to temp. after each trip. The St. Johns in Jax is acidic, muddy, nasty as it gets. Plus only 3-4 more years worth of incessant dredging! YIPEE! YES, I really like the things Merc has done. Oh, I ran right thru two Honda 225'S ALREADY!..the pits! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. Been doing KZbin for 10 years, and with loads of engine DIY stuff, But mostly fishing, related. I know what work it takes. Ive done as many as 4 vids a week.

No anti-seize on spark plug threads, no grease on plugs? Gap pre-set on plugs? Oil filter not primed? Impeller not greased/soaped upon installation to housing? Great video!
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
I didn't for these plugs, I use my impact to get them out, so they come right out, also, we will change these plugs in probably 2 months when the engines have about 1,000 hours! Plugs come pre-gapped! You can't really pre-fill an oil filter on an outboard engine, most of them are installed upside down! The oiling systems will have oil through everything within a couple of revolutions, so it fills up quick! Here's some more information from our website on pre-filling filters: www.bornagainboating.com/pre-fill-fuel-filter-water-separator/ After putting the grease on the driveshaft to hold the keyway in, and then cleaning the water pump housing in a parts washer, there isn't much need to, everything is pretty greasy and wet so the impeller just slides right into the housing! :) Thank you!

Do not use grease on the oil filter gasket! Also dont loosen the engine oil drain valve more than 2.5 turns or you can damage the internal seal!

No. Water pump replacement usually after 3 years, but I stretch it to 5 years on my Mercury F115.. The alternator belt should be inspected every year. My alternator belt in my car is 10 years old, and still looks like new. I don't know what Mercury says.

@@mcplutt it’s weird with boats. I think it’s how much constant stress is always on the motor and the salty weather. If you dry dock it then it’ll last longer. But if you wet dock it like us. It gets corroded/stretched. Also 1000 hours on a boat is meant to be 10 years of use

it's really amazing. These stuff normally kept secret to the public so service guys can make money. It's simple. However, youtube is paying a lot more money to these guys for having their videos watched compared to them making money just for servicing engines. So nothing will ever be kept secret! Think about how humanity will be pushed forward just for sharing their secrets. KZbin can really be humanities biggest invention after patenting. I'm sorry to bring this up under this video but it really is exciting.

A water pump change, belt and spark plugs at 100 hours? This is insane. $1500 at least for each motor. I buying a new boat in 2023 and was looking at the new mercury V10 but not if I have to do all of that maintenance every 100 hrs. Spark plugs, water pumps and belt should last longer than 100 hrs Yamaha is way less maintenance at 100 hrs. Oil, filter, lower unit oil, fuel filter, grease and water fuel separator. I change my water fuel separators a every year or 75 hrs.

Technically it is a 300 hour, it's just come to call it a 100 hour. Mainly because this is at over 500 hours and the engines are only 3 months old! Idk if you would really hate it, if you got to spend as much time on the water as he does ;) The real "boat ride" to the check book is the fuel bill these guys have every month!
