I didn't see an actual comparison between the merc and Suzuki....
@taco4726 ай бұрын
There ain’t no comparison between the two . I have both , an 8 hp Merc (2014) and a 9.9 Suzuki (2016) . The Merc was like new on a boat I bought. It can take a few pulls to start cold and it’s hard to find neutral sometimes, and if you needed a little more throttle to start you have to put it in gear. I use the Suzuki as a kicker on a bigger boat , it’s actually a 20 horse with a restricter plate in front of the throttle body to make it a 9.9. With electric start , power tilt, and long shaft it weighs 115#. It always fire right off a purrs like a kitten all day long. But I think the new Merc’s are also injected now so….??
@stephenp7776 ай бұрын
@taco472 I do have to admit the merc can be hard to find neutral but starts 1st or 2nd pull for me and the weight savings was my main deciding factor. My point was he just was like here's a merc and just went into talking about the Suzuki. There was no side by side or even running the boat with both motors. The video should be "check out my new Suzuki 9.9"

People sleep on suzuki outboards but honestly i think they are a fantastic value and dependable. My father needed a new outboard for our old skeeter bass boat and we dropped in a new 65hp suzuki in the 90s. That boat is still used almost every weekend to this day. We were honestly skeptical but we also had a cabin cruiser kept docked at a marina and we see commercial fisherman with suzuki outboards and they tell us all the time that they hard to beat.

Can't go wrong with a Suzuki outboard. They are rock solid as long as you keep up with maintenance. They are Usually much Cheaper than other big brands and in the past some dealers were doing the 3 + 3 warranty. I have a DF25AS and its the same block as a DF30. Can upgrade it easy like the 9.9 suzuki. I have a 2019 that has less than 10 hours on it. It was in a storage building for 3 years then transported with fluids in it being bounced around and cranked up in 2 pulls. I am about to start using it again more. The reason I went with the Suzuki 25 vs a Yamaha 25 at the time. The suzuki was a 3 cylinder with more bottom end power vs a 2 cylinder on the Yamaha, also a lot cheaper, and at the time I got the 3+3 warranty. I am a suzuki fan because I have had several Suzuki atv's like the Ltz 400 and several Drz 400 enduro bikes and ran the crap out of them with zero problems. That stinks you had problems with your Mercury. I believe the mercs 30hp and lower are made by Tohatsu. Carbs are fine and easier to work on, but if you don't run all of the fuel out of the carb/ carbs and let it sit, it can be a nightmare on anything carbureted. If you were to get another 30hp or below "merc" again, I would suggest just getting a Tohatsu as they are cheaper and come with a better warranty usually. Good luck with your suzuki.

@@chevyon37s How is that? The mercs around here seem to be $2k more for a 50hp vs the suzuki 50.
@chevyon37s6 ай бұрын
@@jrminate I just paid $800ish more for a Suzuki 50 than I was quoted on a Merc 50. But that’s also with Suzuki’s nicer tiller handle, and the tiller handle isn’t included in Suzuki’s base price since they sell a motor that is bare and open to adding a tiller handle or setting up for remote steer.

Bezos man, just box it Up and return it to China if it fucks out on you. Shouldn’t there be some benefits to your PRIME Membership? I mean, you’ve been paying and paying every single month, and never got anything out of it, except express shipping. Anyway, don’t feel bad for multi-billionaire Bezos in this dilemma: He will take your boxed up and returned motor returned by you and put it on a wooden skid, and auction it off with different, random customer-returned products, including coffee makers, USB chargers, and Beanie Babies.. .. and now a big broken outboard from China

Suzuki 9.9 and 20 hp are the same motor according to everything I have seen. The only difference is a restrictor plate on the throttle body and the ECU on the 9.9 hp. There are videos showing how to convert the 9.9 to a 20 hp by replacing the restrictor plate and the ECU.

Dumb assess All those motors are made by Tohatsu. Up to 40 hp. Just difff cowling and color. Those big engine company’s don’t have time to to build those low income Motors. They focus on big shit. Tohatsu builds everything. Same moter Suzuki 20 is same as 9.9. Just diff ecm. If you take air box off 9.9 you will see a air restrictor with holes to slow air.
@dominikz.13765 ай бұрын
Nice! So you think the 9.9 with the air restrictor removed would run at like the same running conditions and performance as like the 20HP Suzuki (or Mercury)? Intresting

That fucking sucks My 1971 Evinrude 2hp has been repaired and shit so many times: I figure that the mechanic is lying to me and saying “90 compression is good, it’s good!”, when in fact you want at least 120 to be viable and function (new should be 165-180). You basically have to get lucky with the old engines, small and 100hp*+. But I had no idea the newer mercuries and newer engines are sold with unknown unsolvable running issues. TERRIBLE: for all that money spent. I’d be so pissed. I’m still pissed for being ripped off on that 2hp many years back because had I known what I have as my constitution for acquiring any boat engine, which I thankfully no longer need, I would’ve never gotten it. And smacked that seller in the face!

I have never seen a lower unit shatter until then. And not Covered. I ended up buying a lower unit on E -Bay and replacing it myself.

The best motor in my experiences has been the rare 1974 Johnson 115 HP Stinger III. It got tuned and set by a tweaker dude at the dock, and has run perfectly untouched for 11 years and counting. Every other engine, new and old, big and small, does not have that work horse-ness and reliability. Maybe an old 1980 Chrysler 45hp outboard, 2 stroke: the reliable, bulletproof, never ever refuse to quit, never ever refuse to start two cylinder engine. Like an antique tractor.

I know Mercs, Evinrude and Nissan are made by them but I'm pretty sure Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki all make their own outboards. The Suzuki 6hp for example is built to different spec than the other 5 and 6 horse outboards.
