Late Suisa Rungsung, a Visionary former MP, who later became a Member of the Naga National Council (NNC) once asked and pleaded with Meiteis to accept ST Status. He was humiliated and spat on by Meiteis. "Ekhoi Hao macha, Hao pang natte" "Eikhoise amaangba mi natte" Translation: we are not Hao, and not foolish like you or Hao means backward, foolish, Untouchable to Meiteis. We are not lost, man." Suisa was dejected but tried again speaking to the Meitei Maharaja of the then, but he was meted with a strong warning and dire consequences if he further pursue the matter among Meiteis. Suisa wept and wrote in his diary "One day these people (Meiteis) will demand ST status by then, it will be too late to undo things that are achievable now" No doubt, the present drama pouring out by Meiteis and its HC to grab the tribal rights and most importantly tribal land is an SOS call to unite the tribals to fight for our rights.

This is one thing I respect our Nagas, our English may be good or bad but we still try to reach out to everyone thus speaking in English. But Mizos and Manipuris usually do the opposite of speaking only in their dialect, there is nothing wrong in doing so but when you do that you are restricting yourself to just that specific group of people. Even in none political grounds like singing, rapping, etc Mizos and Manipuris just stick to themselves by singing in their local language, dude there are lots of hidden talents in Mizoram and Manipuri but the sad thing is they will remain hidden because of themselves.

I found your interview very informative and interesting. So, may I also share my opinion with you on the ongoing Manipur crisis in the form of a comment: I have been closely watching the current crisis in Manipur. Actually, the fates of the Manipuris (Meitei) and at least the northern Chins, who identify themselves as Zomi and Thadou inside Chin State, are inseparably intertwined. The Manipur River flows through northern Chin State and enjoins the Chindwin River in Sagaing Region. It, thus, serves as the bloodline for a large part of the northern Chins. In return, the Meiteis' long-term survival as a nation depends heavily on the northern Chins. A vivid example: If the Chins built a dam on the Manipur River in Chin State, most of the Imphal Valley would be underwater. So, all the people concerned - leaders of both communities and the Indian government - should consider such matters in their attempts to solve the problem. And the two communities should make every effort to live side by side in harmony for their own long-term survival. I am the author of more than 40 political papers on Burma and a 960-page history paper on the Chin-Kuki-Mizo-Zomi people to which I belong.

I have never looked at the matter in this angle. However, I do think that restoring harmony is going to take generations and miracles. Maybe it’s time we part ways, in good terms. And live side by side (cause of the geography), in our own terms. Just sharing my opinion.

I am compelled to join it. Regarding criteria for ST Meitei fulfils all the five critereria and approved 7 years back by ST Commission Delhi. The present requirement is recommendation from the state govt which contains socio-economic report and ethnographic details which have been delayed by the government. Secondly, Meiteis are not Aryan or real Hindu who do not practise varna system. Only Bengali ethnic people who had assimilated themselves to Meetei Brahmans. We dont have kshetriya, Sudras or Vaishya. Masses of Myanmar origin can avail Aadhar and ST of Manipur. Why not we to save our land with constitutional protection. In Nagaland, there is equality with a single law . And tribal can own land in the valley of Imphal. A valley people cannot own a piece of land in hill. Such system is not seen in Nagaland. A Sumi can own land in Kohima or any Naga can do the same in other district. However, the intensity of the demand is louder now . God bless all

Meitei as a community does not have a big population. This is not about being jealous of kukis or being insecure. Our demand for ST is to protect our rights and culture. I notice the discussion to be very generic and unsubstantiated without delving into any socio-political and anthropological depths. I appeal for an issue of such importance to be discussed with an expert. Otherwise, whatever that's been stated here in the discussion turns out only to be a claim. Below are some points the host and the discussant are not aware of: the Meiteis and how the constitution define a community to be a Scheduled Tribe in India. 1) Not all Meiteis are hindus. Hinduism/Vaishnavism among Meiteis got spread around the early 18th Century. You will find many Meiteis still practicing traditional Sanamahi religion, and even among Meiteis who worship Hindu gods, they still follow Sanamahi too. 2) Among Meiteis who follow Hinduism, there is no Verna system of caste classification as Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Sudras. Vedic caste is a foreign concept among Meiteis. Scheduled Castes among Meiteis emerged out of groups of Meiteis who agitated against and refused forced conversion of Vaishnavism/Hinduism by the then king of Manipur. 3)In the recognition of Scheduled Tribe in India, religion plays no role in this process. Gonds, Santal, Meena, Naikda/Nayak, etc. are Hindus and still a Schedule Tribe in India. Bhutia, Monpa, Chakmas, etc. are Buddhist and still a Schedule Tribe in India. Kuki, Naga, Khasi, etc. are Christian and still a Schedule Tribe in India. 4) Having established a kingdom and having a long written history do not refrain any community from inclusion in ST. The continuity of a community from ancient times to present days is also no reason to bar a community from recognising as a Scheduled Tribe in India. Munda Scheduled Tribe developed their own institutions as early as 1500 B.C.E. The Meena Scheduled Tribes established their kingdom as early as 6th Century B.C.E. Bhutia Scheduled Tribe was the ruling community of Sikkim (as king) till the inclusion of Sikkim to the Union of India. Ahoms in Assam were also the ruling community. Tripuri Scheduled Tribe of Tripura has its own kingdom for ages and still has a titular king. In simple words, the survival of ancient civilization is not a valid reason to object to the inclusion of some communities in the Scheduled Tribe list. India is a secular country, the practice of one’s religion is one’s personal choice and the Supreme Court and Constitution of India guarantee this right. 5) There are 25 lakh people identified as Kuki themselves in India, 20 lakh people identified as Naga themselves in India and 15 lakh people identified as Meitei in India. The Big Statement of Meitei as a major/big community is a hoax. The largeness of community also is not a subject matter in the recognition of Scheduled Tribe in India. There are “1.6 crores Bhils Scheduled Tribe, 74 lakh Santal Scheduled Tribe, 30 lakh Gonds Scheduled Tribes, 15 lakh Bodos. 5) Manipur nationalist movement is not a recent one and dates back to the formation of UNLF in the early 1960s. In 2014, a committee formed and led by Union tribal affairs secretary Hrushikesh Panda to review the guidelines of recommendation and recognition of a community or part of the community in Scheduled Tribe list of India, and they are as follow: (a). Autonomous religious practices, although practicing the Hindu way of life would not be a bar; (b). Marital relationship with another tribe (the majority in the tribe should marry within the tribe or with other tribes); (c). Distinctive Culture; (d). Historical and geographical isolation; (e). Social-Economic and educational backwardness; and (f). Distinctive Language. (a). Autonomous religious practices, although practicing the Hindu way of life would not be bar: it is well documented that Meitei was mass converted into Hinduism in the 18th century and still retain many themes of its traditional religion and even still many follow the traditional religion, which is a type animism, pagan, totemic, ancestor worship. For example- Meitei believes that Mount Koubru is the cradle of human origin and here all the god and goddess visit observer their creation. The Institution of Amaibi-Amaiba (Sherman, Priest, traditional medicine man, etc.), Umang Lai-haroba (Forest God festival), Chagumba (first solid food feeding to child), etc. still exists in Meitei society. (b). Marital relationship with another tribe (the majority in the tribe should marry within the tribe or with other tribes): Majority of the Meitei still married within the Meitei community. Within the same surname, there is no marriage at all; within the same clan, marriages are avoided; a different clan is preferred to engage in marriage relations. (c). Distinctive Culture: Culture is a very broad term which is reflected in the institutions, tradition, arts, dance, dress, etc. of the community. Manipuri dance, Maibi jagoi, leima jagoi, thougal jagoi, thabal chongba, etc. form of Meitei dances shows its uniqueness. Sports and games of Meitei like Yubi lakpi, sagol kangjai (Polo), Mukna kangjai, Khong kangjai, Kang sanaba, etc. shows its distinctive culture from others. Martial arts of Meitei like Tang-Ta, Huyen-lanlong, Mukna, Ta khaosaba, chaibi chainaba, Arambai, etc. also show in distinctive and unique culture. (d). Historical and geographical isolation: In the history textbooks of India, Manipur and Meitei history will not present in any amount as Meitei till the event of the British having no connection with the other communities of India. This shows the historical and geographical isolation. Most of Meitei live in Imphal Plateau which is above 2000 meters above the sea level. The nearest effective railway station is 561.9 KM (National Highway 2) on mostly mountainous roads. (e). Social-Economic and education backwardness: According Reserved Bank of India 2015 reports, the urban area of Manipur i.e. area where Meitei lives is the poorest in India (RBI, 2015). This translated Meitei is one of the poorest communities in India. (f). Distinctive Language: Meitei language also known as Manipuri language is one of the languages under the 8Th Scheduled of Indian Constitution. UNESCO identified this language as one of the vulnerable languages of the world (Moseley, 2010). This inclusion in 8th Scheduled of Indian Constitution and UNESCO identification as one of the vulnerable languages of the world shows the distinctiveness of Meitei language.

>Meites are tribal by nature and just considered tribal by words in India not on papers (the issue) "As being stated meiteis have reach far beyond tribe they had there own kingdom so they should not be given st status" but countering that dimasas who also have kingdoms raja maharaja in the history are given ST status too....and so are many other tribes how were the great rulers in Assam are being given ST status what about that? About religion..... religion is not even seen when giving ST status coz there are alot of hindu tribe eg: dimasas, bodos....... Talking about majority /minority....meiteis might be having majority in Manipur but just with a slight no. Its 50:50 ratio of which those 50% live in just 20% of the total land area of Manipur I.e the imphal valley whereas the hill regions surrounding the valley covering almost 80% are being reside by the non meiteis in other words becoming minorities in their own mother state. Adding on restrictions to buying land in the hills whereas the hill people are allowed to buy land on the valley. And now talking about meites outside Manipur for instance Assam they are minorities community and I guess I don't need to elaborate about their right now, that can be well understood "Inclusion of meitei language as official language so it cannot be given the ST status?" But also there are other ST languages that have being included by the Constitution for example bodo and if you ask me why.....to preserve such languages not because they have reach far beyond tribalism coz like the bodos even the meiteis are one of the tribe that are decreasing in huge no and if nothing done now.....like many tribe which have already extinct it will too And by definition tribals means the inborn, the group of people who live together share same language culture history and so on.....which the meitei does. And every single tribe have now adopted modernization which is completely okay they have to with time.....every tribe have went or divert alittle from their originality which is also completely fine....nearly no tribe is as it was in the beginning and that cannot be a stating point as to a particular community is tribal or not coz no tribe is as rigid as to not change itself and walk with time. Criteria to ST then and now would be different as no tribe meet all of those now...but they did then. With time all tribe have advance so did the meiteis. And lastly regardless of what status given to meitei....that's not the concern of people now.....it's the safety of the people and end of violence in the state and outside the state.

Manipur are advancing far ahead comparing to their neighbouring states. Most of the Northeast bureaucrats in this country are from Manipur. Every year people from this state put their names in UPSC, SSC and All India competitive exams compared to those people in the neighbouring states. Varieties of talents have originated from Manipur including in sports. Scientific farming started flourishing. We have started experienced more in using our resources. Vlogger are thriving. Old people are happy. Young people dreams high. We are well cultured people. We have more important things to do than this trivial mindset. Manipur have a potential to excel in so many ways. Meiteis have no logic to avail General, SC, OBC and ST status at the same time. The reason for their demand is for land and to disenfranchising the tribes of any right or privileges. Thus will economically deprive them as well. Moreover if Kukis get into Government jobs, its not just because of ST reservation which is only 7%, but it's the education they received from quality teachers and schools run by missionaries. No wonder they burn schools churches and hospitals as these are the ecosystem that makes people better human beings who can stand on their own feet. This is what makes a facist government uncomfortable.

I would agree that @Mr Kahuto Chishi can speak very well but he has stated all wrong facts on verdict of Meiteis getting ST status even @Mr Lungleng is also misinformed..... I have proof to what i am saying and you can search this in google it is about an article published by INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH JOURNAL OF MULTIDISCIPLINARY STUDIES on meitei ST status and what they have said about those 5 points in all points meiteis qualify for being an ST. The below paragraph are exactly written in the book. (a). Autonomous religious practices, although practicing the Hindu way of life would not be bar: it is well documented that Meitei was mass converted into Hinduism in the 18th century and still retain many themes of its traditional religion and even still many follow the traditional religion, which is a type animism, pagan, totemic, ancestor worship (Singh, 2011). Within the same surname, there is no marriage at all; within the same clan, marriages are avoided; differ clan is preferred to engage in marriage relations (Devi, 2016). (d). Historical and geographical isolation: In the history textbooks of India, Manipur and Meitei history will not present in any amount as Meitei till the event of British has no connection with the other communities of India. This shows the historical and geographical isolation. Even in present days, the geographical isolation is soon in regular long term economic blockage by recognised Scheduled Tribes communities to teach lessons to Meitei tribes from time to time (Lisam, 2014). Most of Meitei are lives in Imphal Plateau which is above 2000 meters above the sea level. The nearest effective railway station is 561.9 KM (National Highway 2) in mostly mountainous roads. (e). Social-Economic and education backwardness: According Reserved Bank of India 2015 reports, the urban area of Manipur i.e. area where Meitei lives is the poorest in India (RBI, 2015). This translated Meitei is one of the poorest communities in India. (f). Distinctive Language: Meitei language also known as Manipuri language is one of the language under the 8Th Scheduled of Indian Constitution. UNESCO identified this language as one of the vulnerable languages of the world (Moseley, 2010). This inclusion in 8th Scheduled of Indian Constitution and UNESCO identification as one of the vulnerable languages of the world shows the distinctiveness of Meitei language. Meitei are denied the right to learn their language in the state of Assam (India), Bangladesh and Myanmar.

This show is quite informative and very very cool. But you know, people that demand ST in Manipur also done lots of R&D and they demand. They simply did not demand ST, as some of the meetei are in General, OBC, and ST too. Some of the meetei are Christian, Muslim Pangal, Hindu, and Sanamahism, and have lots of bloodlines with Naga in Manipur from the Origin. We still and do have LAI HARAOBA which shows the bloodlines with Naga. Different people, different perspectives, different points of view, so we should respect each other. Manipur is in danger. Manipur will be like Tripura where indigenous people are vanished. That's the reason Meetei is trying their best. 1. Poppy plantation, 2. Hills burn down, 3. Immigrants Kuki, Bangladeshi, Mayangs, etc. Lastly, Manipur is running bad politics, unlike Nagaland. Nagaland is ruled by Naga but in Manipur, Manipur is ruled by bad politics. So, it has lots of differences. Nagaland CM is very concerned about how to develop Naga at each and every point. Regarding immigrants, regarding lane laws, the naga has lots of unity, unlike Manipuri. Lastly, Lungleng Show. Here, respected Sir, nothing to express but just one word Great and too Lungleng Show. Thank you.

Yes, this is a new era so we should respect each other and live in peace and harmony. Do you know that some of the meetei have ST status? Kuki should be blamed on their respective MLA. Kuki MLA is living in Imphal, Kuki should raise their voice to their MLA rather than creating this type of conflict. Innocent people are in a worse situation, economic condition. A personal opinion from a learning Naga Historian# Manipur: From Raja to Raja mirja Manipur, from ancient time with HQ at Imphal was independently ruled by the Meiteis, an advanced ethnic group under the coveted title "Maharaja" ( the last being Maharaja Bodhchandra Singh, 1941-49). Manipuri language/Manipuri Meiteilon the official language of the state is among 22 constitutionally recognised regional languages in the country. Like Sir Kahuto clearly stated, with proud historical roots of an independent Nation, they have fairly advanced well beyond that "Special-preveliges needy community" Category. ST Status is accorded to Minority "Tribal Communities", who needs special provisions and reservations due to their economic/technology and educational/intellectual backwardness. The demand for ST Status was completely ridiculous from the first place. Hope and pray Wisdom prevail among the negotiating parties to bring peace in the region permanently.

The issue is not reservations and special privileges. The issue is plain and simple about land. The artificial social and political restrictions imposed on Meiteis where they can’t settle in neighbouring hills or used them for cultivation and not just for tribal village lands but even in hills like Nongmaiching or Langol or foothills which have always been under Meitei control is bound to create issues again and again. There has never been a concept where Meiteis or Nagas or Kukis cannot settle in each other’s land at any point of history before the merger. Kabuis and Tangkhul have always settled in the valley while Meiteis have always had outposts at Moreh, Kwatha, Ccpur, Jiri.

It was really a great conversation 👍🏻..i think the main reason why meitei demanded st was missed out…you hv covered the criteria for ST not the exact reason.. and this has been demamded from almost 10 yrs. recently the court has approved to process further as it was valid…but still ppl from other communities can file for rejection..not in violence

@@tuibageorge1997 if you guys join the fight we will automatically join you guys 👍🏻 . if you don't want to see the KuKi dominating manipur becos of this event, Manipuri nagas should stand up and fight for the cause 👍🏻 that's all I'm saying.

Thank you for clarifying this issue, now I know better. God has blessed Sir Kahuto with wisdom, may he continue to educate the young minds. I wish Sir Kahuto was my uncle. I could sit with him in his kitchen & ask him all my doubts and educate myself and equip myself with his knowledge. I don’t even mind 2 to 3 hours of podcast with him. The longer the better.
