Been watching your videos for about a year. Just showed this to a friend to get him into wet shave experience. Thanks for the videos. I am on a budget and I did a bit of online and You Tube research before I purchased my first DE safety razor. I went with the Merkur 34c and after experiencing about 10 different blades settled on the Gillette Silver Blue blades. That was almost 18 months ago. I must admit that DE Wet shaving is the way to go. After a little bit of a learning curve, I can honestly say it is the best shave I have ever had. In fact, I can go for two days before I have to really attack my 5 o'clock shadow, and my razor burn under my neck that I suffered with for over 30 years of my life shaving is pretty much now nonexistent. I have you to thank, watching all your soap, razor, and blade reviews. Thanks and keep up the videos if you can.

This is my daily razor and blade! Feathers took a little getting used to, but as long as you respect them, you're fine. Shaving with any other blade now feels like shaving with a spoon! The Merkur 34c HD is my first and only razor. There's a lot that I love about it. Sometimes I'd like the handle to be a bit longer, but you do get used to it. I love the weight of it. Makes life very easy when you're getting started.

Nice work Nick, I've ran out of Feathers but I'm gonna order a 100 pack soon. My growth has been really coarse of late, I don't know if it's the temperature drop of winter but my go blades (Astra, Lab Blue) have been struggling a little with 1-2 days growth on the first pass. I've also decided to stop blooming soap, I've noticed it's really accelerated the erosion/usage my soaps.

While I appreciate a good shave, I think some have gone to the point of fetishizing this daily activity, and that's okay. I considered trying out double-edged blades. But I opted for the good ol' Trac II with a can of Edge. It works for me, and takes a fraction of the time some people do with their double-edged routines. Good on those who've made shaving a hobby. It's as good a hobby as any. As for me, I get it done fast and clean so that I can get to other things that I prioritize.

Hey nick, i am new to this and honestly i stole my whole set up from you. I am using the merkur 34c (well to be honest everyone starts here i think) and using lab blue's with the satin synthetic brush you reviewed (I liked how it retained lather and had some backbone) though to be honest I simply selected the lab blues since it seems most places tell you to simply pick a blade to use to learn on and once you know what you are doing to then figure out you're favorite blade. I would love to here you're feedback on lab blues, if you think they are a right blade to learn on; as well if i find myself not likeing them, maybe what type of blades i should try next once i'm at the "find you're blade" stage. waiting for the merkur 34 to come in the mail, as well as the brush, the first merkur i got had some discoloration underneath the head by one of the outside post....i think the start of some rust, so i sent it back.

Tried this combo, didn’t work for me. Too much irritation around the sensitive areas. My 34c works best with Big Ben blades and asco blades. I put feather blades in my stainless steel feather razor and it’s a beyond bbs shave with zero irritation. If you want the best and can afford it, get the feather stainless. What in the world is with multiple passes? My face gets one single pass and that is it. This guy IS definitely on target with the Merkur/Feather combo however, that's exactly what I've used for probably ten years now, you can't beat it. I used to use Mach3 Turbos but I never looked back once going with a safety razor - oh, and I shave my head with it too. One good soap combo is Dove+Cremo, it gets the job done. Also had the same Tweezerman badger hair brush for years and years as well. You can't beat the value of this setup, it flips birds to Gillette.

A one direction shave can be fine for a clean tidy look but when it comes to getting a very clean look that will stay that way throughout the day then going against the grain and in different directions gets it ultra clean. When you work long shifts you may want to look clean at the end of that shift.

Some razor blades will have greater, (larger), center holes than others. It all depends on the manufacturer's tolerances that they have set their blade making equipment to. Some blades will have a sloppier fit than others. This can happen even with the same brand of blades. It's easy to center the blade by sight before you tighten it down, just handle the blade by the ends to adjust its position in the razor. If you find that it's not possible to center the blade no matter what you do, the razor may be defective. With the Merkur razor I would think that it's rare, but anything that's mass produced can have a bad razor slip by their inspection process. You may have gotten that one in a million.

sorry to comment on an older video but I'm really enjoying your channel. I've been DE shaving for about 3 years with an old no name razor. I just picked up a Merkur 34C and really like it. I was wondering what you would recommend for a way to transport it to and from the gym in my bag. Actually would be awesome to do a video or series of videos on 'travel' setups.

Hey Nick I noticed you are using a SOC badger in this video...I have at least 8 boar semogue brushes including the SOC boar, however, I have been thinking about buying the Badger Brush but am not sure if it's as good as the boar? I would love to hear what your opinion is on the badger? any feed back would be appreciated

+Toni B hi Toni, i have this 2-band badger Semogue aswell, in fact i have used it few minutes ago. it is very luxurious brush, have nice backbone and face feel. i always faceleather and really enjoy this brush. for its cost it is incredible value and it is maybe better than some much more expensive badgers

+David Vykoukal Hi David, thank you for your comments they are much appreciated and have tipped the scale for me to order one of these brushes. They look fantastic but I was unsure of the quality because I have only used their boar brushes and in my opinion they are the best on the market...once again David thank you :-)

hi. thanks for the videos. super helpful! question: how do you determine your post shave? still new to wet shaving. witch hazel? bay rum? alum block? I've seen you use all three on different occasions.
@whiteflagstoo

+Michael Luckmann you mentioned an ingredient, a scent, and a tool in your question. in general there are 3 important considerations for aftershave: 1) ingredients, 2) climate, 3) what you like. It's okay to not be as strong on your aftershave game. balms are typically for colder months because they moisturize; that is, they help hold on to whatever oil and water left over after you took out of your healthy skin by shaving. but they can be used all year anywhere. other aftershaves are astringent, meant to tighten the skin and remove redness. witch hazel is an ingredient in many good astringent formulas. alcohol is used because its also an astringent, but it is rough, evaporates quickly with a sting. most wet shavers will only use an alcohol aftershave because they like that feel, and often get a formula that has other, better skin care ingredients. this is one area where you will find something nice in regular drug stores. Generally what is good for your skin in other places is good for your face. So walk the mens grooming aisle and look at some ingredients like any lotion or cream. Nivea Men makes a good balm for instance. Videos on youtube are also a great help.

+whiteflagstoo thanks. that's helpful. but still doesn't answer my question. witch hazel, bay rum, and alum blocks are all astringents. I'm wondering why Nick would use each of those at different times. eg. if through sampling he has found one to be better than the other?

+Michael Luckmann Alcohol is an astringent, bay rum is a scent. I believe there are bay rum scented aftershaves that do not use alcohol (they use witch hazel instead). I always use an aftershave but only use an alum block if I have cuts or razor burn. Alcohol, alum blocks and styptic pencils all have a burning effect on the skin but are better at sealing cuts and stopping bleeding. Witch hazel has a cooling effect but isn't that great for healing cuts. Alcohol will of course dry your skin out, many people don't like to use it because they get acne. It has the opposite effect on me, I must have really greasy skin, because using an alcohol based aftershave actually reduces my acne.

Is this Merkur 34c good for close shaves? I shave once a week and I honestly don’t have much hair to shave, but when I shave there is always a 5 o clock shadow, and I’m trying to get the cleanest shave as possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a thick beard and a heavy growth. For me, nearly all blades will need to be changed at the fourth of fifth shave. I mostly do a triple pass shave each time. Hope that helps. I would suggest monitoring for yourself and see how many shaves you get until you get tugging.

+rukusbukus now that it's gone, apply something hard and nonflexible right above, adhesive this to the skin around it using flexible medical adhesive, tape, band-aids. and simply don't allow it to grow back. when it heals over the body is forced to heal flat.

You have a cleaner shave than i ever will before you even start shaving, then you do 3 passes, jeesus :p I got this razor and 2 packs of feather blades a few days ago. I showered and applied pre-shave oil before shaving. It felt like i was trying to pull off my face off with a clamp, it was absolutely impossible, almost worse than a one time use razor from gillette. I think i would have better luck with sandpaper, what a joke. Don't understand what i am doing wrong to have such bad results, clearly people are able to use these things. I managed to get the hair on my neck/throat, some of the dune high up on my cheeks, that's it, refused to cut anything else, tried 3 blades.

Don't bother with oil or anything of the like. You don't need this stuff. Key to DE shaving is making sure your face is wet. Moisten your face with warm water. Let sit for 30 seconds. Leave wet. Apply shaving cream or shaving soap. Let sit for aleast 30 seconds before shaving after that application. This softens hairs etc. You must keep your face wet for DE shaving. Wetter the better. If you could hold your breath and shave underwater this would be perfect for DE shaving.

Do you actually fill the sink with water and then dip your shaving blade in it? You should never do that since doing so you’re getting microbes onto and into your skin. Unless you disinfect your entire sink beforehand? You should rinse your blade under running water.
