I'm reading the book Hag right now. Toby offered to help Merle out because he wasn't feeling well. Merle asked him which Haggard songs he knew. Toby told him he knew them all. That's how big a fan he was. After 4 songs, Merle couldn't continue singing and said, "We've got a special guest here tonight." He introduced Keith, who had no idea he was going to perform that night. Toby finished the show.

When Merle pointed to Toby and gave him the go ahead to start the song I could see in the way he looked at him start his song that he knew then that it was over. Such a sad a beautiful moment. Toby is a helluva man and he stepped up to be there for his legendary pal.

This was a beautiful moment in time . Toby was just being Toby . You know it had to be hard for Merles son to see his Dad not up to his usual self . Merle was a superstar and Toby was a rock star for stepping up . Toby knew in his heart ❤️ that anything could happen . Merle said the show must go on, My band needs to be paid .

You know that Merle would have done the same thing back in his younger days for Lefty, Ernest, Bob Wills, etc. True respect given here. Merle should have been in the hospital, maybe his air was low and his voice not as "mighty" as we remember, but that man could still rock the guitar!! RIP Merle and hat's off to you Toby!

As I understand it, this was Merle's LAST live performance. It almost hurt to listen to him struggle. Some said he should have been in the Hospital, but he needed this for his Band. Toby Keith stepped up to the plate big time.
