Hey Yall ! I love your reactions . One country music artist you should check out is Dwight Yoakam. I'd recommend Guitars and Cadillacs to start , or 1000 Miles from Nowhere . He did a cover of Sloop John B , which is a an old song from the Islands of the Caribbean , also done by the Beach Boys . The Beach Boys is another awesome band you should look into .

Fun fact about Merle he was in San quinton prison when Johnny cash played a concert there that inspired Merle to make music. Years later Merle would do the same for David Allen Coe.

sam dire yeah I was just pointing out how much influence Johnny cash had and not just country he wasn’t country he was the golden age of rock and roll Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and the man in black himself mr. Johnny cash signed to sun records within weeks of each other it wasn’t until his latter years cash was considered country. And the fact that we have two of the greatest (Merle and DAC) bc Johnny took a chance the record company didn’t want to do, play prisons, is incredible with that said Merle ain’t no Willie or Waylon

Steven Jones, good point. In the 50s there was no such designation as "rock and roll" and "country." That didn't really happen until later, probably the 60s. I think the Beatles and the British Invasion pushed rock away from what became country and western. Even into the 70s the genres weren't all that far apart. Charlie Daniels, Allman Brothers, Skynyrd, the Eagles- the whole Southern Rock era bridged that gap. It's funny how times change. Today, bands like Blackberry Smoke are playing the Opry in Nashville.

Really appreciate this reaction guys. I've grew up listening to Merle. Know this song like the back of my hand. Your take on "there's folks who've never worked and they've got plenty" is an interpretation I had never considered. I had always just taken it as a comment about people born with silver spoons. I think Merle meant it both ways most likely.

Somewhere on KZbin, there is a video (I looked it up and included the link at the end of my comment) wherein he is talking about speeding through Texas, trying to make it on time from one gig to the next when he got pulled over for speeding. When Townes explained that he was a songwriter and trying to get to his next gig on time, the officer asked him if he wrote anything he would recognize. Townes answered, "Well, have you ever heard of Pancho and Lefty ?" Watch this short and sweet video of Townes telling the story. It has a cute twist and you get a nice feel for what kind of man Townes was. Mr05chuck Bonnie Owens sung background vocals on almost all of his records.... She was his wife for a long time also. I dont think Leona ever really made it on many of his songs since they were only married for a short time in the mid 80s.

I grew up listening to Merle Haggard and a ton of country, but today I listen to a lot of rock and metal, some rap, some country, and some of everything else basically. I just want to say that I really enjoy watching you guys talk about music, and I think it's awesome that you're so open to different music, and I think you do a great job of approaching unfamiliar music in a neutral way, regardless of the positive or negative bias related to said music. That steel guitar sound at the beginning of the song, which prompted you guys to say “that’s country music”, is a signature of what became known as ‘the Bakersfield sound’. It was popularized by artists like Merle Haggard and Buck Owens - the latter known for his role as co-host of the tv show Hee-Haw. The Bakersfield sound went on to dominate 1970’s country music, and was an important bridge -along with Southern Rock - to the modern country sound heard on the radio today.

That lady singing back-up is Leona Williams, and it's neat how you guys picked up on not only her vocals but also the contribution that that style of back-up singing added to the greatness of the music. She's a very interesting story. Williams was a young singer-songwriter and a lifelong musician who'd cut a few minor singles for MCA (including the first album recorded in a prison by a female singer, in San Quentin, no less) when she joined Merle's road band as the "girl singer". In those days, most country touring acts were sort of package deals, where you not only got your star but also several other members that took standard moments to shine. You had a hot picker, usually a "brothers harmony" or "family gospel" back-up group, sometimes a high-lonesome tenor, and a girl singer. In the mid '70s, Williams replaced Merle's estranged second wife Bonnie Owens, who'd toured with Merle during his star making days in the '60s. She and Merle married in 1978. They eventually divorced in 1983, and by then she'd written two of Merle's Number One hits. One was a song called "You Take Me For Granted", where the singer tells his beloved how devastated he is that she seems to not really care if he loves her or not, he's just there. It's made all the more powerful by the fact Leona wrote it about how she feels Merle treated her, and he knew it. Okay, so there's all that then. Good stuff, guys, keep it up.

Love Dio and the Dio years but personally Ozzy personifies Black Sabbath. Dio made it into a different band albeit an awesome one you can really tell Tony adjusted his riffs for Dio's melodies. If they were to review Dio years then I would say Heaven and hell or Lady Evil would be perfect. Although I still believe Lost in Vegas needs more ozzy and get down to the roots

OMG! I never comment on stuff, but I just HAD to after watching this video!!!! I just found yall’s channel tonight and have been binge watching for over 2 hours. I wanted to see a lot of your “country music” reviews, and bam!, there was a Merle song!!!! He’s my absolute favorite! My Dad and I were huge fans (even saw him in concert together), and when I was little we “entertained” the family with me singing “Daddy Frank” with him. I lost my Dad, unexpectedly in January of 2017 and listening to Merle makes me feel close to my best friend. **I know that may sound corny**. I know you did this video months ago and will probably never read/see this comment, but I wanted you to know that I love you guys, and love your channel and the whole vibe/meaning behind it! Also, as a side note, I was feeling extremely sad one night and practically begging my Dad to give me a sign that he was ok, and honestly, the song “Looking for a Place to Fall Apart”, by Merle and Janie Frickie (I’m not sure I spelled that correctly) came on as I was driving, praying and crying... I had forgotten that song and had not heard it in YEARS! Wow, it was my feelings, being sung back to me, and quite honestly I felt like it was sorta a song by our favorite, from my Dad to me, to let me know he’s ok... Anyway, thanks guys!
