Merle Haggard Dead at 79

Merle Haggard, Country Music Legend, passed away today on his 79th birthday, his son Ben confirmed on Facebook. From "Okie from Muskogee" and "Mama's Hungry Eyes" to "Mama Tried" and "Branded Man," Merle Haggard lived the songs he sang.

Merle Haggard Rip from UK here , just this guy was special he turned his life around through his belief in thinking he could become a star in country music and when he got out of prison he did become a big country music star as he turned his life around big time ..Brilliant story about Merle and his sons im sure shall be very proud of this fact becoming a Great country music artist one of the very best in the business , what a performer with a voice to die for . So very sad, my husband and I had the pleasure of working our local Civic Center, taking photos and got to spend sometime with him for three days.. and the year before that we were at a performance given by him and he pointed me out and ask if I was married, I pointed go my husband and said yes!!! later he told me I reminded him of his wife...a year later he remembered me....I've always enjoyed his music....RIP....Sweet Patriot...

The music genre we know and love as (country) or whatever you choose to call it, has changed a lot over the fifty years since I first started enjoying it. Along with Rock n Roll the artists who perform Country and Rock... don't inspire the same feelings for me, that they did then. One singer who remained solid for me was the "Hag". True to the hardscrabble roots that inspired his writings in many a hit song, Merle Haggard will be sorely missed by his devoted fans. Not a perfect man, God only made one, Merle was perfect for his time, delivering a style and lyric that will not wear on the senses of country fans of every stripe. We needed him and will miss him, God bless you Hag and rest easy in the arms of the Lord, and thank God for your work. DMC

I met Merle Haggard in person at Flores country store in Helotes Tx a few years back who I considered the superstar of country music by far !!! I will never forget Merle i have almost all his CD's and felt a great loss on news of his death , tears rolled down my face as I accepted his passing.Good bye Merle may God have a special place for you in all of our hearts.

I never got to see Mr. Haggard live, such a sad thing to begin with. I am a deep into the jungle Vietnam veteran. I've listened to him almost everyday since I was 12 or so. I've lived many of songs. Some I don't know how I made it through 'em but living many of his songs has also been someone of my best days. I will never forget him & miss him with a sad ol' heart. Quite a good man he was & is. Cool me a beer down Mister, I don't have long to go....

He was amazing in concert, like a guy you'd like to know, nicely dressed with th old fashion gentleman type. When you heard him sing you knew his records weren't "touched up" and the Strangers were always on point. I saw him at big concerts small concerts, fairgrounds, outdoor, indoor, fairs and a casino once. Amazing!!

Very disheartening to hear of Merle's passing today.......music just lost another great artist, performer and legend! Oh how I thank God for Thomas Edison! If it wasn't for recordings, future generations would have no idea or recollection of how great of artists and music we were all so fortunately been to witness and experience during our lifetimes.
