Ah, the genius of Merle Haggard. The drumming in this song has always fascinated me. Probably played by Biff Adams, but it's the beat that I can't identify. Is it a boogie beat? I don't know enough about styles to figure it out. Anybody out there know? Thanks Don and Dan.

Whereas 60's Merle is probably my favorite, his 80's run (which includes this song) is just as stellar. But then it's Merle, so you wouldn't expect anything less. Essentially every single he released in the first half of the decade is fantastic but I particularly love "The way I am", "My favorite memory", "Going where the lonely go" and " A place to fall apart". The version of "Pancho and Lefty" he sang with Willie is also great, but I like Townes Van Zandt's original a little bit better. If it wasn't already clear enough, the Hag is a personal favorite of mine and there are too many songs of his I love to mention even a fraction of them in this comment. "Mama Tried", "I take a lot of pride in what I am", "Sing me back home", "Swinging doors" and "Ramblin' fever" are the first few that came to mind.

Another strong song is "What Am I Going To Do..." The live show version from Austin has the best "take it" flows between the players! You and other commenters will enjoy the short verses, then long solos to let the poor bastaerd think about his life choices at the moment.
