This song reaches down into a soul I sometimes doubt is there... & pulls it up into the sunlight. I discovered it years ago & go back to it religiously when I am feeling blue. I cry every time I listen to it, but they are happy tears because I think of my family & of my girl, & realise they are still here & so am I, & I find the strength to put one foot in front of the other & be the man I need to be. I’m so lucky, & this song reminds me.

Merle was my brother's favorite country singer and evertime I listen to him I feel like I can hold on to a little piece of him, because I know he has listened to all Merle songs a bunch of times. I miss my brother more than I can put into words. I wish I could fly I would definitely fly to where he is Thanks Merle for all the memories ❤ ❤

We played this song at my older brothers funeral, its one of the saddest songs ever written,my brother loved it, i hope he is happy now because he battled depression and was very intelligent person,he was reading alot of philosophy and was preparing for his death.I really felt guilty for a long time about his death, but im finally getting to where i can deal with it now,i just live for the moment and appreciate every minute of the day,to anyone that has a sibling or child that has committed suicide i pray that you are able to deal with it and that there is help for those suffering from depression,God bless and wish everyone the best..

Merle was my Dads favorite singer, and this song really makes me think of him. What I wouldn't do to hear and see you one more time. This song is so hard to listen to, but it reminds me that he isn't far away. Love and miss you pops ❤

My favorite singer of all. Saw him a bunch of times, my favorite was in '83 ( I was 18 years old) at Billy bob's in Fort Worth stockyards. I was 20' away and eating dinner while Mighty Merle sat in a chair with a guitar and played dinner music.

Blaze Foley is the writer of this song . Look up his few records he gave to us until he was shot , perfecting a old man from his son who abused him and stole the old man's welfare checks . It happen in Texas, Austin, I believe........ Merle is king with a song called Kern River , but there are hobo song writers out there like Blaze and Towns Van Zandt, you need to listen to , a lot of them had mental issues and did not fit in with music folks , but were song writers up there with the best ....please look them up and listen to these guys...they will break your heart and leave you humble and leave you a better person for doing so...

Hi Joyce, I photographed Blaze's first CD Oval Room and I am remiss how Merle doesn't pay much credit to Blaze for this song but it did put Blaze on the map for which I'm grateful. I like Blaze's version better. And Townes, I got one photo on Live & Obscure and both Blaze and Townes were great friends of mine, more so Blaze. we were like brothers. He let me know we shared the same last name (Fuller) in an embarrassing for me way but it all worked out.
