Blaze Foley sang this song at my dad's memorial in 1984 . He loved and thought that my dad walked on water. He barely made it through the song. Rest in peace Blaze. And rest in peace to my father Clyde Buchanan. Writer of Austin Pickers.

Blaze Foley by all accounts was a musical genius. He lived in Austin during the Armadillo HQs. Days. He never had a plan for his life. He and Town Van Zant were the same. Drank and fought and played to empty bars. Lost talents, undiscovered superstars. This is a tragedy. There are songs we will never get to hear. If it wasn’t for Merle haggard this song would have been lost. Life is too short to waste the talents God gave you.

My problem as a Musician is I'm easily pulled in different directions-lacking discipline I guess. So now I'm working on Clay Pigeons and of course I had to hear Merle cover this masterful song. I wouldn't touch this after Merle, I'd never feel adequate..

I heard Merle sing this song at the Bonnaroo music festival a couple of years ago. EVERYBODY cried, cynical, ironic young people, women, children, old men. This is the greatest vocalist of our generation singing a great, great song.

Wynn Stewart taught Merel a lot about music. Merel still followed his Bakersfield roots. He didn't like Nashville that much.

There is not a single day goes by that I don't think of this song. I played this at my wifes funeral and there was not a dry eye in the place. And yes to truly appreciate this song, you have to hear Blaze Foleys version.

You could take EVERY SINGLE singer in what passes for country music these days, add them ALL together and they wouldn’t add up to one Merle Haggard.

Merle gave Blaze a lot of credit. I heard that he tried to purchase Blaze's catalogue, but couldn't work it out with Blaze's family. There's a Blaze documentary where Merle is interviewed, and he said that Blaze died a hero. What better tribute than for the greatest singer ever to do your song...
