Blaze Foley sang this song at my dad's memorial in 1984 . He loved and thought that my dad walked on water. He barely made it through the song. Rest in peace Blaze. And rest in peace to my father Clyde Buchanan. Writer of Austin Pickers.

knowing this was written by a troubled, sometimes homeless guy...seems to tear me up, putting myself in his, and all us other troubled souls shoes...if i could only fly...i sure wish we could all fly, to be near our loved ones, when we are lonely, and need to be near them...then for some strange reason, it makes me think of my loved ones who have passed away...if i could only fly to heaven to see them.

Blaze Foley by all accounts was a musical genius. He lived in Austin during the Armadillo HQs. Days. He never had a plan for his life. He and Town Van Zant were the same. Drank and fought and played to empty bars. Lost talents, undiscovered superstars. This is a tragedy. There are songs we will never get to hear. If it wasn’t for Merle haggard this song would have been lost. Life is too short to waste the talents God gave you.

@@0Nafod0Blaze's was better anyway. Glad I took the time to explore the geniuses that lived in the shadows of sold-out showmen. Merle was good but it's always so sad to me to know that the true greats were always outshined cause someone else had the money to make their songs famous, and a more advertisable face to sell them through.

"If I Could Only Fly" was written by the late Blaze Foley, a sometimes-homeless Austin songwriter and performer. Blaze was really hoping that somehow Merle would hear his song and record it.
