I didn't know his music other than he was on hee haw... his speech was .. well i'd say mush mouth is how I've described, post stroke or something... Since then I've been listening to more and more. June Carter Cash is my favorite for now. If i had that chance again, now, I'd say "I loved Don Rich, You guys are gr8" I play a fender "clambake" acoustic guitar. I would have guitar and song writing questions, hugged the guy, punched him for being a deadbeat dad... j/k

I'd have to agree with you. I'll just add that some other recording artists in other genres have made it a point to sound great when they perform. The first one that comes to mind in that regard is Gordon Lightfoot. I went to his concerts 3 times. All 3 were as precise as studio recordings. I think most people would probably be hard pressed to tell the difference. Others included James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Simon and Garfunkel, and the Everly Brothers. I think it's interesting to note that all those, except for S&G, had country root, to some degree.

One of Merle's keyboardists, I didn't get to know him too well so I don't know if he was a session keyboardist or a touring keyboardist, settled down in my region and went around to churches with his wife and brother performing gospel music. They sold tapes, I bought two of them over his sessions at my church, and they had his phone number on them. At the time I was wanting to get into the music business and I called to ask him about his keyboards and his recording setup. He talked me out of pursuing a career in music, telling me it was a rough life and if I didn't like bars (which I don't. Didn't even like it when my brother dragged me to one for supper a couple of times) I would be miserable performing. He told me to keep practicing my keyboards, but I'd be better off finding a church that needs a pianist or an organist. I took his advice to heart, and I'd say I'm far happier putting my musical abilities to work as the organist for my church than I would have been had I started my Genesis inspired band. I also live about half an hour from the town where one of Merle's ex-wives grew up. The high school gym there use to double as a concert hall. Merle's ex would sing there and my dad would do his ventriloquist act. It always made her mad that his ventriloquism got more applause than her singing, especially since her brothers always ran up to the front to sit in front of the stage while my dad did his act while they just stayed in their seats for their own sister.

This is Merle's life story, although he wasn't seving life without parole, but he was in prison. The best line, "That leaves only me to blame 'cause mama tried." This shows that Merle took the responsibly for his troubles. In today's world people always want to balme someone else, but not Merle Haggard, he took the blame himself. It's a shame we don't have more like him in htis world today.

The best, the best, the best! He was THE BEST!! Merle Haggard led a life like a country album! When I read his autobiography "My House Of Memories", I had to put it down and shake my head in disbelief every few pages... so crazy that all this happened to ONE person! His songs were so good because he lived what he wrote and he wrote what he lived. Not like the songwriters today! As Billy Joe Shaver, another original outlaw, writes in one of his songs: "Some super stars nowadays get too far off the ground singing 'bout the backroads they never have been down... "

Hello Susie, how are you doing today, hope you’re fine and safe from the COVID-19 virus??
@sixteezchild10 ай бұрын
@@Trevorjennings35 I'm good, thank you for asking! No COVID here and there will not be another shutdown. Last time it started the oilfield shutdown right here. Then the domino affect got the banks, the stores, the dry cleaners, the kids in school, the restaurants, etc. Texas will not shut down again! Here's hoping you stay safe where you are!

Love this song, as I can relate. I change the lyrics around a bit to suit me, "I turned 21 in county sentenced to 12-18 months, no one could steer me right but mama tried". Yes sir that was a crappy 21st birthday but no more birthdays in prison for this ole gal.. Thank God and thank mama!

I bought tickets to go see Merle for my Dad and myself for Father’s Day about 10 years ago. Not only did he put on a fantastic show, but the opening act was the divine country singer Neko Case. What an amazing concert!

I spent a lot of birthdays in prison: 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th, 30th and 31st. Most of the guys had little to no contact with their fathers, but almost always loved and respected their mother and the sacrifices they made.

Having Merle perform this song on a merry go round set while wearing a lime green leisure suit was an interesting choice. I would have perched the lead guitarist on the camel.

I played in a band 9 yrs with his guitar player on this video/Walter Haynes. He played steel guitar in our band. He also played w/Patsy Cline & many greats. He produced many hits & wrote “Girl on a billboard” Walt took me back stage to meet the Hag in 94 & told me he played guitar w/him at one time. I didn’t believe him.lol Haggard saw him & hugged him & acted like a kid around him telling me “Walter played lead guitar for me years ago” I never doubted Walt again. R.I.P.

I had a stare down with Merle, at a Merle Kristofferson concert. I was front row and was watching Merle idle while Kris was singing; Merle noticed me, not grinning like an idiot like everyone else. I was literally right in front of him at the base of the stage. Merle lowered his dark glasses on his nose and stared at me. I didn't flinch, move or change my expression. We stared at each other like that until it was time for Merle to get up and join Kris, must've been a full minute. No idea what he was thinking but it was damn cool.
