I woke up this morning to learn of this legend's passing. Kenny Rogers was an amazing artist, he surpassed limits and was an icon not just of country music, but all things Americana. He is one of those few who had "IT.". I saw him performed in 2016 and when he sang The Gambler I sobbed. I felt so lucky to have heard that performance live. Mr. Rogers, with your talent, your advice, your example, your patriotism, your songs, you gave this could try so much. Thank you for so many memories and lessons. May you rest in peace. I hope as you showed your last hand you remembered that beyond your family you were loved and respected by countless fans across the world.

Heard about your passing this morning. You were a gift from God to the world. I know you are with heavenly choir now. You made me fall in love with country music growing up, after about over four decades, your music still mean the world to me. Rest in paradise Kenny Rogers. I will miss you and I know the world will miss you as well.

As a young child in war torn Beirut in the 70 s. My teenage brother listened to Kenny relentlessly on his cassette player. I used to listen and dream of going to the states. My dream came true in 1984 when Senator John Glenn wrote the immigration a recommendation letter in support of my application for a student visa. I am a proud American living in England now, old and grey with 3 kids and 2 grandkids and owe everything to the late Senator Glenn and Kenny Rogers may they both rest in God s own company for here are 5 lives doing ok thanks to them.....

My Dad feel in love with poker the last 15 years or so of his life, turned out he was really good at it. He never went and played professional, just played at bars and the like. He started taking me when I was 17, and I learned the game too. It has been years since I held a hand, but I ALWAYS keep his deck of cards with me, you never know. He passed away on May 26, 2024, so it's been six months with him gone. For those that read this, this song so much reminds me of him, for he always had a word of wisdom to offer. He was a good man. My late wife explained it the best. He was a father and man worth missing.

Why I've always cherished this song is because it's a message that everyone, at times, needs to follow. Be aware of what and who's around you, knowing that your daily life is a gamble. It's a game where you have confidence in yourself, know when to evaluate yourself, learn to accept and trust others, run away from fear but towards what you feel is your calling. Give yourself faith and do your best, self evaluate, and finally... balance! I find it a message on how to live the life you've been dealt. This will always be a gamble. Play your cards right!

I was watching You Are Cordially Invited where Will Ferrel and Geraldine Viswanathan as father and daughter during a rehearsal dinner for Geraldine Viswanathan's character, Jenni's, wedding, sing Islands in the Stream together. Made me wonder why Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers haven't performed the song together in a while. So, I googled Kenny Rogers and realized he never made it past COVID. I'm sure now I heard it then, but me being me, I didn't want to believe it. And here I am. God rest your soul and thank you for all the music, Kenny. RIP.

Once you know the One who wrote the rules, follow them and give Him everything, He will let you say how you're going to play the game. She was 14 and a violinist. She had her instrument with her and when he saw the case he started to ask her thoughts on various music that she played. He was genuinely interested in her music. The second time I met him he was sitting across and one row up from me on a plane. I introduced myself and told him about how his meeting and talking to my daughter was so great for her. He remembered the occasion!!! God it is nice to see such a superstar behave like a gentleman and be so nice to a young fan. Thanks for so much great music....

When I was 18 years old, my boyfriend (who is now my husband) was getting ready to deploy overseas. The night before he left, he took me into his living room then put on this song and danced me around his living room while he sang it to. Many, many years later, the best man at our wedding sang that song for our bride and groom dance. It's been 30 years and two kids and that is still one of my favorite memories. ...................................... It nearly broke my heart when I learned Kenny Rogers passed away . , Kenny, you meant more to the world than I think even you knew. Thank you for the memories.💖

This song was a regular part of our music festivals over the years. I think this was the first song I knew all the lyrics to as a kid.. 3 years old and I could put my own vinyl on. Still have my original copy. It's always been special to me but so much more today. One of my long time music hero's died last night.. I was actually visiting with one of my friends about our musical influences from childhood and this was one of the album's we were talking about.. and right at the time of his passing too. "Every gambler knows That the secret to survivin' Is knowin' what to throw away And knowin' what to keep. 'Cause every hand's a winner, And every hand's a loser, And the best that you can hope for Is to die in your sleep."

"The gambler, he broke even" I love that sentiment as a metaphor for death. It's like in the movie the Green Mile, Brutus tells Percy: "He's paid what he owed, he's square with the house again." after the execution of Arlen Bitterbuck. Some people look at it as euphemisms and newspeak but the sentiment behind lines such as these is quite lovingly poetic.

Why should it matter if you are black or white? I think it is more a question of parenting. It is likely that you favour the same or at least some of the music genres that your parents like as well. The only reason that so many black kids like "ganster rap" is because of their culture and therefore Self-fulfilling prophecy. If a very young child already thinks "I am black so I must like rap and hip hop" it is very common that this actually comes true.

My husband would turn this song on, look at me and hold out his hand and we would slow dance to it. He was dying of COPD...about 3 weeks before he passed, he turned it on one more time.
