The writers may have annoyed us many times with unbelievable antagonists (e.g. why was Aggravaine plotting against Arthur?), plot contrivances and what not. But they surely nailed it with the Merlin/Arthur relationship - plus the actors did a terrific job. This clip shows the countless precious little things like glances etc between the two. And the writers came back even to lines like that from Gwen several seasons before. The chemistry between Colin and Bradley may have helped too.

i've looked back at the boats merlin has made for lancelot and freya and they are a lot fancier and eloborate than arthurs. i think merlin made arthurs raft the way he did, because of all the times arthur tried to disguise himself as a peasant and how he never told people he was a prince after he saved them. merlin knew that deep down, arthur longed for a simple life so merlin gave him a simple funeral

I am that person who just discovered the Merlin series, been binge watching it for a while. Now I'm in season 5 and I already know its heart breaking ending and I keep on watching heartfelt edits like this. I just can't watch the actual ending myself. I don't want it to end. All the feels man.

I get that ending the show was necessary at some point, but they ended in the most emotionally destroying way they possibly could have for Merlin (among other characters). Everything Melin is, was, and did was for Arthur, when he finally accepted his destiny. He lost many close friends while on that path, but the one friend he never lost, who never changed for the worse, was Arthur. The one friend he never lost through all of the madness, even if he had to work hard and desperately to make it happen, was Arthur. And in the end, they stripped everything from Merlin when they killed Arthur. Sure, Arthur is the Once and Future king. He'll be back. But until then, Merlin is stuck in a world that keeps moving on, stuck in a life where getting close to anyone will inevitably end in heartbreak as he outlives them, again and again. And all he can do is survive and wait for Arthur's return, because his only purpose is to protect him. And based on the final scene, with the semi driving by, he's already waited *centuries,* and they didn't give any closure in showing a nameless character who looks a lot like Arthur that Merlin meets. He's just wandering.

All of those ending scenes with Merlin & Arthur at the end of season 5 always left me bawling my eyes out & feeling like I was an unseen spirit traveling around with them for every episode but forever unable to do anything but watch how everything ends. It was always painful… so painful that I keep having to restart my binge watching marathon again & again cuz I miss the silliness & heartwarming moments from before. I’m currently halfway through season 5 & I already know I’m going to restart again. I’ve already lost count of how many times it’s been since the start of 2024. I’m in no way new to this show & I’ve always loved it but lately I can’t seem to STOP watching it & supplementing the rest of my day with various Merlin videos on KZbin… I regret nothing.

S05.E13 may have been a shock causing traumata for years on many us Merlin fans but if you rewatch it now (or even in this marvellous clip) you'll see Merlin declaring his love for Arthur multiple times ('I was born to serve you Arthur and I'm proud of that and I wouldn't change a thing', 'There will never be another one like you, Arthur', 'I have magic and I use it for you, Arthur. Only for you.') and he gets his final reward. Arthur acknowledges all what Merlin has done for him over the years, accepts his magic and the way he used it and doesn't want Merlin to change. It really isn't as bad as we once thought.

I'm still convinced Arthur actually uttered the words 'I love you' right before his final 'thank you'. He said 'thank you' to Merlin before, so him pretending not to didn't make much sense. Either the producers or the BBC chickened out and so they dubbed it over.

It is just so obvious since Arthur had friends, very fine knights, but there was something special between Merlin and Arthur. And I can see what you mean, looking at his lips movement now. And ofc, that was quite peculiar - Arthur had said thank you. He hadn't thanked Merlin for all of these things he only came to know, obviously, maybe he wasn't most sincere in the past, but you're right, BBC seem to have stretched that quite a bit. Peculiar. I actually came to notice how Merlin responds differently to Arthur's death. With other close ones he lost, he was quick to burst into tears. But he's silent awhile for Arthur, just staring and going through the motions, it struck me.

Been re-watching some more optimistic edits and, ironically, only realised that Arthur refused a hug first time round to then die in Merlin's arms, asking to be held. *sighs*

He actually refused to hug him directly at least twice and several times resorted to just padding him on the back when others like Gwaine hugged Merlin in the same scene for what he has done. The only time Arthur genuinely hugged Merlin was when he found him exiting the bog covered in mud. Sadly, Merlin had the fomorragh creature in his neck and couldn't remember this show of affection and relief. Arthur's *hold me, just hold me* is something completely different, I believe. Merlin was exhausting himself for almost dragging/carrying Arthur to the place (Avalon) he wanted him to be. No more horses and Arthur's massive frame clad in chainmail and plate armour - he must have weighed a ton or so. Arthur felt he had only moments left and wanted Merlin to know his absolution and love for him. The best way to make him listen is to stop him labouring first. Powerful moment, great acting and camerawork/directing. They all did a stellar job (maybe except the writers).

I can not fathom how this did not rise up for me in 2019 when I spent months looking for the best fanvids, ever. This is one of them for sure, the editing, the text visible, and not with yelling and screaming, but vocal music that fit the temperament of these two men on stage and in real life.
