Morning! I have the Hixon jacket, for about 5 years now and love it. Merlin make some really nice clothing.

Morning Jeremy yes they do, but see my short vid on the Oakford pants! I like their leather jackets the only obvious negative to these being they change their range a bit too frequently.

Thanks buddy. Reviews like this are really useful when trying to get bike kit these days. Many shops don’t stock much relying on online sales. Had a look at this earlier along with the Edale and am trying to decide between the two.

The Edale is considerably more expensive and is cotec rather than trad wax cotton. I had a pair of Merlin Oakford pants (see my review vid) which were also Cotec and they leaked, badly and were replaced foc by Sportsbikeshop. So I'd go for the Yoxall.

I am looking at a Merlin jacket. I live in Canada so in the morning it can be 6°C in the morning and 30°C by the afternoon with a random thunderstorm thrown in there I am wondering if this jacket or a similar one would be good for me.
@blueyondermoto6 ай бұрын
It might be. When I returned from the downpours in Scotland, it went from a very wet and windy 11c to 27c back in the South. It was a struggle at those higher temperatures! The lighter 8 oz wax cotton of say, the Edale jacket may have worked better, though I didn't have a good experience with that material on an early version of their trousers. That though may be down to a single rogue example. The Yoxall 2 is still my go-to jacket for touring and 3 seasons when rain is possible.

@@blueyondermoto I am really considering the Edale 2 most of my riding is commuting or in the mountains so I really want something that can handle a quick change in weather. I rode one summer in a leather jacket and it was very hot so I can't imagine the Edale 2 with out the liner would be worse than that.

They're very similar, but the Yoxall is slightly longer, better suited to touring.

From my 40 plus yrs riding bikes, I've obviously gone thru a fair bit of riding gear ... If a bike jacket, that's claimed to be waterproof has vents, this is the jackets Achilles heal, it will leak at some point, those upper front brass zipped so called vents, will always allow water ingress, jacket's a very poor design, waxed cotton needs regular oiling or it'll just dry out & piss water thru every seam ... Bonded Gore-tex is the better option, garments are a little stiffer to wear but way more waterproof than any jacket with a normal Gore-tex lining... Oxford are now offering bonded Gore-tex at a fraction of the ridiculously over priced Rukka garments which have shocking size options & near impossible to find a good fit as Rukka thinks everyone is tall & slim, they don't live in the real world, hence most bikers can't ever wear Rukka gear, even if they could afford to, it just won't fit the average build human, so larger build riders have no chance at all with Rukka gear ... finding good bike is a nightmare, always a compromise, there'll always be some feature of every garment that you can't abide & pisses you off every time you wrestle into it ... check out the latest Oxford Mondial range, it's pretty decent gear, jackets fit ok without having massively long arms on the larger size jackets, neck fastenings are on the snug side if you have a big neck like me, waist options of the pants are on the snug side too & could benefit from an elasticated section built into the waist band for added comfort when seated ... I'm 3 rides into this new Oxford gear & it's shaping up to be nearly as good as Hein Gericke (Cold Black) Shell-tex gear, which is no longer available, it's been my daily gear for the last few yrs & has never leaked a drop, wash & reproof once a yr with Nikwax & jobs a good'en.👍

I used to swear by Hein Gericke, good gear at sensible prices. I can assure you there's been zero rain ingress through any pocket or seam even in heaviest of persistent rain (see example in video).
