Thank you for this video! It explained so much to this relative beginner. I had a local shop set up a new recurve bow that I purchased from them. I noticed it was rattling when I shot while no one else's bow did. I asked one of the guys who sets up bows there why it did this, and he just said some limbs do that. Then I heard your "sounds like a bag of bolts" explanation of a brace height that is too small and decided to check it out. Mine was 7-1/4 inches for a 66" bow! They have been listening to me shoot at their indoor range twice a week for two months and never offered this as a solution. I twisted the string until it was 8-3/4, and now it's quiet when I shoot. I went through the rest of your video and made sure the rest of my bow was set up correctly. Tiller was good, alignment was good, plunger was good, but nock was off. Again, thank you so much for this video.

I purchased a new recurve from a shop in the UK and it's on its way here to the US as I write this. I have been compound shooter for over 20 years and know my way around one so probably could have muddled through this by watching multiple videos, but this one seems pretty comprehensive. I can save it and use it for reference once my gear arrives. The information on tiller was a little confusing but I am sure I can find more details out there and it does not seem to be a critical component for a first time setup anyway. Nice job.

One of the best youtube videos for setting stuff up .. doesn't dilly-dally around .. Good editing. good close-ups. Good use of text space. Would have like to have seen links to individual products... Very well done .. Outstanding.. and to think is was made in 2015.. still good today 2021.

Great instructional. I fully respect the need for the detailed tuning for a target bow, I kind of like the simplicity of traditional style as there's less detail in tuning. Of course there is still tuning to be done but gosh how much more simple.

Best tutorial i have seen. Just got my first setup after finishing beginners course and although the guy in the shop was excellent we didn't get much of chance to go into fine tuning a setup and getting everything right on my bow. I like to know how to do all this myself and what effects the adjustments make. This video has made it very easy to understand what does what at a beginner level. Thanks.

Wow! What a palver! All I have on my bow is a string and a whisker biscuit... It shoots great, though... Interesting though, watching what some archers put themselves through... The day's too short for me to spend half of it putting up and taking down my bow... Especilly as I rarely get out of the house before 2 pm...

Oh thank you. I was assembling my new bow that I got sipped today and my local shop is closed so I couldn't call. The play between the limb and riser before stringing had me nervous. I couldn't find any other video or website that discussed it. Thank you for being very detailed.

Really liked the video! Very beginner friendly, not too many details on what CAN be different and MIGHT be Individual and MAYBE differs etc. This usually makes me (I'd consider myself intermediate) still overthink stuff. I can only reccommend everyone to check if their bow is still in tune. So many things are depending on other things and sometimes you just totally mess up your tuning by changing one detail.

Hehe, i remember the first 3 months not useing nothing more but front stabilisation, according to this video. Just to keep the bows mass down and for another reason. I did not know wich direction the side bars are suppoused to point at xD I was so shy to ask, so i watched archery videos and then at a certain point i putted on the V bar and side bars for all means of progress. The first shots in my life went barely to the target. Now days after 5 months of training, i am hitting 8-10 pretty usually. This video has provided me alot of newbie information for starters :) But listen to the sight part about aiming and think "what went wrong".

am a bit confused about setting the nocking point: you said set the TOP of the BOTTOM nocking point 1/4" ABOVE square. In my mind that means the arrow is going to be aiming down a bit? or have I got that wrong?

So in regards to tiller, you recommend having the bottom limb slightly heavier? On my Uukha UproLite I was running the top limb heavier by half a turn. Do I have it backwards?
@nicepeeps1

excellent demo. so much more than a 'first bow' setup though. my first bow was a wooden Petron takedown bow, set up for me in the shop. a crappy plastic arrow rest. No extenders; rods; weights; clickers, or pressure button. No sight until I added one and no mention of tillering; brace height, or balance. just ut it together and shoot. This video explains loads. Im now looking to get my first intermediate bow. How much for that setup, as demonstrated?
@Harvey600

£500?! Oookkk... think I'll give it a miss this time and stick with SF. I think I can get a decent setup for £250- £300.
@Harvey600
@Harvey600 7 жыл бұрын
Sf won't be much cheaper if you want the whole package, nearly 2 years ago, I bought an SF Forged plus, Premium Pus limbs, a Cartel Sight, a string and a bag. At the time that little lot cost me £370, the riser was £150, today, that same riser is £228! My advice would be go for quality riser and sight, cheap limbs to begin with will serve you well, as your skill improves, so will your strength, you can then buy stronger limbs, don't worry about a long for 6 months or so, V bars can wait a year. Your club coach can give you more advise as you improve
@nicepeeps1
@nicepeeps1 7 жыл бұрын
Ah yeah. thinking about it, I was quoted for the setup without stabilizers. That explains the price difference.

Great video, answered a lot of my questions as a beginner. This may sound stupid, but once you have your bow rigged correctly, do you have to check everything each time you set it up?
@ooohyesplease
@ooohyesplease Жыл бұрын
I'm very much a beginner so maybe off on this advice, however, the only thing I check every time I setup is brace height as the string can untwist while off the bow (unless someone has a tip to stop this happening?) I guess it's worth checking the other things once in a while. Also, I've heard new bows/components need some "running in" so best check after 100 arrows or so...

By increasing the overall poundage of the bow via the tillers, do you in turn run the risk of damaging the limbs, or is it safe enough?

Thanks for this vid! Though I've shot compounds for years, you helped me set my first recurve up fairly quickly. Hoyt Grand Prix 25" riser/medium limbs. Shot a dozen arrows, adjust the plunger, right on from 60'. Issue: Even after tuning the brace (8 3/4") and tiller heavier (bottom limb) my top limb still sounds like a bag of bolts (sounds like a sloppy electric string). What is the probable cause and possible cure for this? Cheers
@treatb09
@treatb09 7 жыл бұрын
also, left handed bows are actually right handed. we've all been lied to so we can be sold wrist guards and whatever else…your bow if right handed should load from the right. this prevents all arrow injuries if they break on release. also, then when you use both of your eyes to aim, the arrow lines perfectly up with your aligning eye. and seems to illuminate that paradox

l ike the video very informative, lots of info i can use, although, im looking to buy my first bow but cant find one i like at a price i would pay, everytime i see a recurve i like its out of stock, ive tried "i think" every website in the UK including merlin and im ready to give up and build a traditional long bow just to get started, its so hard to find a bow similar to this one in the video that is 70" length with 40lb draw for around £300 though i dont want the rods and weights and all the bells and whistles as i want to start bare bow, maybe just a clicker. im was looking at something second hand but sellers are also taking the piss, buy all or none at all kinda deal. i wont buy add on sht i wont use. the bow, the string and arrows how hard is that?

@imbe.
@imbe. 8 жыл бұрын
+Sentot Hary Koesworo II You should allways go to the pro shop and get the right equipment and tips while being in the store. If you cannot see the difference between 66'' and 58''. Then the pro shop and professional tips are most recommended. To get into archery, i really just recommend to visit a archery club to try it out. After that, buying own equipment might be in place. Bow legth, arrow length and draw weigth are things that must be measured by the person, not the age.
