This diy mermaid gown tutorial details the process of sewing a mermaid gown, along with the preparation, materials and tools that you’ll need.
THE SEWING PATTERN
👉 noelnova.etsy.com
HOW TO MAKE THE PATTERN
• Mermaid Dress | Flat P...
*Note: the pattern made in the video ‘Drafting a mermaid dress pattern’ is for a fully lined dress. In the current tutorial the dress is not fully lined. So basically several pattern pieces that were drawn in the pattern making video were omitted in the actual making of the dress (as shown in the current tutorial).
You also can go either way with it. It’s really up to you. If you choose to make the dress fully lined you won’t need bias tape (as instructed in this tutorial), neither a serger to overlock stitch the seams!

@noelnova
@noelnova 8 жыл бұрын
I have a pattern in those sizes available in my store. If you want to make it yourself you should check two of my previous videos on how to take your measurements and how to make the pattern. You would be making the pattern according to your own measurements. All the needed information (plus links) is in the description box. Note: the video on how to make the pattern is demonstrated on the computer but you can do it on paper.

What fabric did you use? And what interfacing? I am wanting to make a satin gown with a heavyweight interfacing for the hem and the bustier but I am not sure what type to use as I have never made a gown before
@noelnova
@noelnova 8 жыл бұрын
+Jennifer Stanley (innocentsmoothie) I used a blend of cotton and viscose fabric and a heavyweight (woven, cotton) interfacing that was fusible. I would be cautious with satin because the fabric can be a little too flowy (not giving enough structure) and it's usually a synthetic fibre (unless it’s made of silk). You may sweat in it and feel a little uncomfortable wearing it. If you still prefer satin then use cotton or another natural (breathable) fiber for the lining of the bustier.

Everything you did i excellent the only thing dont like is the Zipper you used is not hte appropriate for a dress like this , and the Technique is not used anymore . Now what is most ued is the invisible Zipper. Also you need to put a linnig to the skirt so it can make the waves and the fullness of the skirt better

If a dress is fully lined, is it customary to sew the boning to just the outside of the lining fabric, so that when the assembled dress is complete, the boning is between the layers of fabric, and not sewn at all directly to the outer fabric? I hope this makes sense.

MOST OF THE TIME WHEN PEOPLE WATCH THESE THINGS IS TO LEARN FROM YOU WHO ALREADY KNOW HOW TO SEW. SO IT WOULD MAKE SENSE , IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO TEACH US BY GIVING US MEASUREMENT AND TELL US WHAT YOU DOING, IT MAKE NO SENSE TO US.
@noelnova
@noelnova 7 жыл бұрын
You must not have checked the description box, my youtube page or seen my other tutorials where I demonstrate how to make the pattern. I made the pattern from a block pattern I draped. I also have a tutorial on that. This sewing tutorial is for those who have bought my pattern or those who watched my other videos where I show how to make a block pattern, how to tailor it to your own measurements and how to make this mermaid dress pattern from it. In this sewing tutorial I have written down what I’m doing at every stage. The stages of the sewing process take a lot of time. My sewing tutorials are usually long because I want to make as much of the process as transparent and understandable as I can. For that reason I have things written down so people can see and read what I’m doing even when the video is on pause. How do you come to the conclusion that I'm not willing to share what I know and what I'm doing in my tutorial?

Can this be done with a more stretchy material? If so, what fabric would you recommend? 100% beginner trying to get at least this off my bucket list....always have wanted to learn to design/sewing =)
@noelnova
@noelnova 8 жыл бұрын
Yes you can also use a more stretchy fabric but it is a lot trickier because you would have to take into account a lot of different things (e.g. body type, other materials, altering the pattern) to get the best result, and do things differently as shown in this tutorial. It’s kinda difficult to explain exactly what to do and what to take into account over text, especially because you are a beginner. If you want to practice or find someone who is a bit more experienced to help I would suggest any kind of woven fabric with a blend of elastane, or use a densely double knitted and heavy jersey fabric (that has minimum stretch) otherwise it not give the desired volume at the bottom even when adding horsehair braid.

I want to make this for my wedding.. can you tell me what fabric choice is best? Also, the amount of fabric needed :)
@noelnova
@noelnova 7 жыл бұрын
For a wedding dress I would go with silk taffeta. It will give you a posh shine and appearance. Taffeta has a crispy feel (slightly stiff) to help with the structure and volume of the flared skirt. The amount of fabric you need depends on your size. For the patterns I sell I have an estimate of what is needed. If you make your own pattern you’ll have to use the pattern to determine how much fabric you need. I have a tutorial on that titled “how much fabric to buy” (bit.ly/2s8CEOE).

Perhaps you can buy the materials that you can’t find locally online. If you’ve made a pattern yourself I encourage you to check out another video of mine where I show you how to determine how much fabric you need (kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJ6olGWEgat6fc0). It includes the I amount I used but it will be different for every size. If you don’t have a pattern you can buy one at my store. It includes an estimate of how much fabric you need and a comprehensive illustration of how to place the patterns for cutting.

on a scale of 1-10 how difficult is this ?
@noelnova
@noelnova 8 жыл бұрын
It depends on your own experience and how you know your way around a sewing machine. I made the design and pattern as simple as I know how so it would be less difficult for someone with less experience. If you understand what I’m doing in the video from beginning to end, then making the dress is basically like putting pieces of a puzzle together with the dress as the end result. The only thing that would be challenging is putting in the zipper and neat finishing of the dress which comes with some experience.

You are amazing. The dress so beautiful. I am in a Pageant and I bought a dress online and everything is perfect but it is way too long. so would you know how to cut it shorter or something like that.

Thank you! How to make the dress shorter and to finish the hem depends on the type of fabric, the design of the dress and the grainline on which the fabric was cut. I would advise you to take it to a tailor and have them shorten it for you because If the hem isn’t finished properly it can take away from the whole look of the dress. If you don’t have the experience of doing this you would be taking a risk, especially since you’ll be judged while wearing the dress.

That's awesome. What kind of interfacing was used on the hem and corset?
@noelnova
@noelnova 8 жыл бұрын
+jonrob8687 For the corset and the hem I used heavyweight woven (cotton) fusible interfacing. It feels fairly stiff, similar to horsehair braid.

+noelnova I've tried to google it but I can't find heavyweight woven fusible interfacing. :-( Would you be able to tell me where you got yours from? Thank you :-)
@noelnova

+jonrob8687 At a local store. I would advise you to go to a fabric store to feel the interfacing and decide which one you want rather than buying it online. If you can't do that than google for woven interfacing and then look for something that is also fusible and heavyweight.
